I appreciated the environment and the ten minutes included between classes to give teachers time to speak to parents or guardians to let them know how their children were doing, and what sort of improvement was needed to fulfill their academic needs. As is the nature with most child education services there were times of stress where teachers, management, and parents were confused and teacher - parent conveyance was messy. But everyone always put in maximum effort to resolve any problems. I highly recommend Best Brains to any parents or anyone looking for a part time job.

This business has so much potential but falls short on several counts:…read more 1. The mentors aren't kept up to date, even after this is pointed out to them. We were excited to read several of the bios, particularly of Stanford students, only to be told none of them are available, they used to work at Breakout Mentors but no longer do. There seems to be a bit of bait and switch, since other mentors that were offered to us were not Stanford students. 2. We finally agreed to accept a different mentor and agreed and reconfirmed the day and time with the mentor multiple times. At the appointed day and time our son was visibly excited and couldn't wait to get started. Then we waited. And waited. I could see disappointment creep into my son's eyes. We encouraged our son to email the mentor directly, which he did, but no answer. Then I emailed the mentor. No answer. Finally, about half an hour after the session was supposed to begin, we called the mentor and he answered, sounding as though he just woke up. He did get online quickly, but the late start meant that we had to cancel our son's next appointment and take a loss on that lesson. 3. We asked for a partial refund of this lesson, since even though the full time was given it started half an hour late (and probably would have been even later had we not called) but unbelievably, Breakout Mentors' response was "as a small business, we aren't as capable of making price adjustments for mistakes." 4. I run a business as well, and I would never dream of charging clients for consultation time that I was late to, even if I was able to go later, it's so highly unprofessional and disrespectful of the client's time. 5. It's also highly ironic that a business with "mentor" in the name wouldn't take more responsibility for ALL aspects of mentorship, including planning ahead, taking personal accountability, and being on time. We're working with our son to impress upon him never to be even one minute late for a lesson, so it's pretty poor role modeling for his mentor to have to be called in half an hour late. Until Breakout Mentors and its mentors can take more personal accountability for delivering on their promises we can't recommend them.

As his skills progressed, he had to move to different teachers, but all of them were great and fun to work with, each bringing new area of expertise. Brian was exceptionally brilliant in finding the best tutors for my son based not only on the skills level but also on the project that my son had in mind. We prefer two lessons a week schedule, that way the projects they are working on progress with greater speed and there is no need to spend a valuable lesson time to go over the things they learned last time. I recommended this to my frineds, and 3 of them signed up. Over a period of time, I however started noticing that they stopped focussing on speed. Every time I approached Ms. Charu, who ran this center, she would say, 'Your kid is one of the best. Please wait - my main focus starting next month will be on speed. I will make your son a demo boy and make him do all demos.' So I waited and waited - but nothing happened. Worse, the center started turning unprofessional. First, they stopped serving water in the center to the students. 'Cost cutting,' they told me. Secondly, my friends that enrolled their kids based on my recommendation pulled out. They said, 'Teachers shout at kids. I don't want my kid to be in this environment.' Slowly I started noticing that classes don't start on time - they were always 20 minutes after the scheduled time. Nobody seemed to be interested anymore. The straw that broke the camel's back was when they moved my son's classes without informing us. When I asked Ms. Charu,she said, 'All other parents wanted me to change the timing.' Fortunately for me, many parents were sitting there. So I summoned up courage and asked, 'how many of you opted for this new timing?' Not a single hand went up. I then realized Ms. Charu did it so that her teacher can be made available for another new class. To be fair, parents are also to be blamed for this. I found myself taking my son late to school. I should have realized that kids are gradualy dropping out. I should have demanded more from Ms. Charu by asking her to setup a contest or a demo. The teachers are pretty decent and accomodative. When kids are hungry, they serve cookies and biscuits. Really good. I just think the center needs more professional management. I am now talking to SuperMath in Santa Clara. I heard they were good at focusing on speed, which is what I want for my son. Let me see how this one goes.
