The communication was terrible - we never knew what was going on in class, who the teachers were, or why teacher after teacher and assistant director after assistant director were there one day and gone the next. The activities in the fancy lesson plans they send you weren't followed (for example, they almost never went outside), the teachers were unhappy, and I've never witnessed a manager yell at their staff like I did at drop off at Goddard. It got to the point that we couldn't trust what anyone was saying about our kiddos care and we left at that point. As first time parents we didn't know that 6 months of our kid being miserable at drop off wasn't normal, we feel really lucky that we left Goddard and are settled at a place where drop off and pick up are an ease, communication is regular, and the teachers love our kiddo.

My two sons have thrived in ways that are less measurable and far more important than anything we noted when they were in "regular" school. The truth is that compulsory education tends to focus on relatively arbitrary facts which might be memorized for a test, but are in no way a good measure of intelligence, well-being, or future success. When youth are trusted to find their own passions, they dive into learnings they cannot simply forget. They aren't forced to stay any longer than they wish to in any one subject, which reduces the risk that they will lose their natural love of learning or burn out. All in good time, students dive again, as desired, and in this organic way, they build a much more solid knowledge-base over time. Rather than simply learning facts, they continue to find out who they are, and to build their own paths towards their own goals. The "kids" here seem to maximize their own individual social-emotional skills, learned naturally through the democratic nature of the school and the peer feedback therein. Facts can be learned anytime (and are), but character is best build in our early years of development. Fairhaven provides just that--a fair haven--within which youth can develop this character. A place where youth take all the time they need to heal from any past school-related trauma, learn to re-find a love of learning (or keep it if they never lost it!), and learn natural consequences without shaming. This method requires parents to trust the process and take the long view--definitely not always easy, at all--but absolutely worth it. I work to build connections to other Fairhaven parents, and that supportive network continues to be incredibly helpful in this regard. I cannot recommend Fairhaven more highly.

Please do not repeat the mistakes I made when I lost my middle school years here. I am a former student of Fairhaven School (2016-2023). In my time I found that the school suffered from quite a few issues. I do not recommend it for kids with ADHD, Autism, or learning disabilities, as it is fairly sparse in any structured or dedicated methods to help people with those issues find out how to function. My primary issue in this school was liability and safety. I had two friends and classmates who were sexually harassed and assaulted. One was a transmasc man assaulted by a cisgman. In that case the school ejected the perpetrator. The other case was a cisgender man being sexually harassed by a cisgender woman. The accused was not suspended or ejected from the school. In neither case were authorities contacted by the school on the issue. In my experience, the school is fairly obsessed with money and liability. The staff is less concerned about student safety and more-so about legality. In addition, due to a student lead democratic judicial system, kids are often subject to callous judicial proceedings, with jurors often being disinterested in the process, and intentionally speeding along hearings. Furthermore, many punishments given by the judicial system were, in my opinion, outsized and often drawn on ideological lines. The school was very intolerant of certain transgressions, which is fine for a school to do, but I find is inappropriate, as the school advertises a fair and rounded judicial system. I also once again find that student lead judiciaries were often very lax about prosecuting sex-crimes. I have been able to flourish after transferring to my local public high school, and thanks to my time there I've been set on a college course, but I undoubtedly have holes in my knowledge and am behind where I could be. I seriously suggest looking into other options, as for the high tuition, this ecosystem is not worth it. I will admit I have felt jaded by my experience here, but without touching the culture of the school, I simply think the model doesn't work. Kids should have freedom, but I find that if young kids aren't forced to learn, they typically will not build skills that will be helpful later. It isn't fair to have a 6 year old decide their future all the way out to college, because all they want is to have as much fun as possible at that age.

That being said, I have a friend whose child thrived quite nicely with Sylvan's tutoring so the expected results from this learning environment are likely very child-specific. When we toured the school everything looked to be in order the principal Mrs. Scott was very pleasant and had really updated the school over the last few years. The school was organized which my sons other school lacked. The beginning of school was great, orientation new parents learned all the rules of the school and the kids got a chance to meet their teacher and classmates. The week before school started at a meeting with the parents and teachers we found out that the kindergarten class had 28 kids in the class, mouths dropped and you heard a big gasp in the classroom. After the announcement parents started to look around and talk in smaller groups about how we are paying for a private school why are the classes so large. We were told that the classroom can hold up to 30 kids and if 2 more enrolled they would accept them at any time during the school year. This should have been my first red flag clue and I should have run for the hills with my refund check in my back pocket. The class size was so large they had to convert the library into the kindergarten room in order to accommodate everyone. The kindergarten class had 2 teachers in the room so should I say 1 main teacher and 1 aid. The first couple weeks of school went pretty smoothly my son was happy and during well, after those 2 weeks passed that was it his mood had changed. I begin getting phone calls on a daily basis from him teacher saying that he wasn't paying attention and making strange noises in class. This wasn't my kid they were talking about, he had been to school prior and they only thing he would get a note home for is talking to much (he's a chatty boy). The phone calls went on like this for days finally I met with the teacher and the lady really got under my skin saying that maybe there are problems at home that are causing him to behave this way and maybe you should have him speak with a professional. As a parent who has raised your child for 5 1/2 years with no prior problems like this you start to get a little red in the face and want to go on attack mode. I calmly told her thank you for suggestions I'll talk with my son. After a long conversation he told me he was disrupting the class because that was the only way to get the teachers attention. He never got called on to answer questions or write on the smart board for 56 days (the class did calendar every morning so they knew how many days they had been in school). It broke my heart to know that everyday a question was called on and his had would be up he was being picked over. This is a private school with 28 5-6 year olds, after looking at the other classes and talking with the parents it seemed that the class sizes were growing in every classroom and parents were frustrated. Besides the class size the curriculum was sub-par, my son was bringing home work he had done when he was 3 in pre-school. Oh the principal Mrs. Scott was a reputation of dodging parents and avoiding any questions. It's amazing what you find out after you get in the school, just because the wrapping on the outside is pretty doesn't mean the pieces inside aren't broken. I pulled my son from St. John the end of November and moved him into a wonderful Christian school where he has 13 kids in the class and his behavior changed over night. St. John was not a good fit for my family so good luck to you if you sign your child up. Also please ignore your child's teacher when they say he or she may be ADHD, I've been told multiple times those initials get thrown around a lot when a child "acts out" in class.

I got a catalog in the mail and was perusing it one night as I watched tv. A totally unassuming…read morecatalog, it's printed on newsprint and is small. The courses they offered seemed wide in variety and like your standard adult education - I was surprised and pleasantly impressed since I had tried to find adult education in Alexandria previously and was not successful. This catalog somehow came to me without me having to find it. The class was 'How to Buy Residence' and it was $30 for city residents, and $40 for non city residents, taught by Dr. Diane Murphy, who is a buyer's broker. When we signed up for the class, we figured...'what were we going to get for $30? We'll be lucky if we learn ONE thing that night', but for the price, we figured what the heck. Parking is not hard although navigating through the school is ridiculous - it's quite sprawled out and just tough to find the class we needed. But when you walk into the building, there is a sign for Adult Education and a listing of classes and classrooms, so immediately I felt better; I was in the right place. It was a two hour class and it turned out to be chock full of good information. The class was excellent, excellent, excellent. I would have easily paid 3x-4x as much for the quantity and quality of information I learned in that class. I highly suggest anyone thinking about purchasing in the next 3 years to take this class. I was a total beginner and my boyfriend was a lot more knowledgeable about the subject, but he learned some important facts also, and said 'sometimes it's just good to hear it again'. The class probably should have been 2 hours a day for 2 to 3 days. I have a feeling she had a lot more info to impart. It also was as she said 'trying to drink out of a fire hose' - it's a huge amount of information in a short amount of time. But it's all good stuff. There were 10 people in the class. The registration process left much to be desired. It was so stone aged I almost ended up not registering. In this day and age, having to print two forms for my boyfriend and I to take a class (we don't fit on the same form), write a check and then snail mail this over to wait and see if you got in - it's unheard of. Nevertheless, I was sooo happy with the quality of the class, that I would easily do it over again and am looking through to see what else they have now. *Note: Please keep in mind that this review is based on ONE class; I can't comment on any of the others until I have tried them, and when I do try another one, I will update my review then.
