I came to N-Flux to find a hobby and ended up finding a passion and a home away from home. Yes,…read moreit's a gym, and the new facility in the bottom level of 1722 I Street will blow your mind with all the new equipment and toys (no more stripper poles, just tons of mats, gloves, pads and other goodies). But more importantly, this place is a community. N-Flux has the best instructors and classes you will find anywhere in DC if you're interested in taking Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, and all sorts of other martial arts and combat sports. Chris and Colleen are the best instructors I've ever seen. They don't just want you to get skills, they teach concepts, conditioning, and character. Part of the training is how to be a good classmate, and experienced students help newer students and welcome new people. As a result, you're not just coming for a workout, you walk away welcomed and encouraged to be the best you can be -in everything. The classes are challenging in the best way, even their Yoga classes (and I hated yoga before I took N-Flux yoga with the amazing Scott and Maicie!). Chris and Colleen are tough and push you to be your best. Since starting, I've lost 25 pounds, gained 25 new friends, and according to my work colleagues, "am the happiest I've ever been." This place is way more than a gym and you won't know what you're missing until you come try it for yourself.

But once inside it does not feel small at all. As a matter of fact you forget everything other than the class as even the beginner classes are intense. You come here to learn to fight and defend yourself. It's intense, it hard, and sometimes it hurts. But if you want to sweat, get a hell of a workout and kick some ass, then this is the place to be.

(I've been doing Kali for a long time and have had to pay triple what they charge). I love all the coaches and the community here is really great. The instruction is top notch and you will not only get a great workout, but you will learn life saving techniques to get yourself out of trouble. The gym is pretty basic - think no a/c or heat. Train like you fight. They offer Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu, and Filipino Martial arts (think stick/knife fighting - which is my favorite :)). It's no nonsense, get it done type of training. This isn't training for martial arts sports, you're training to end the fight and get out of the situation. In addition to the classes (almost 7 days a week), you can participate in sparring on Saturday mornings. No invite needed, just show up and feel what it's like to fight someone fighting you rather than a willing victim that you get during the week during training. There is gear you can borrow for the day, but I highly recommend getting your own as soon as possible. There really is no other way to learn to fight than with someone that's uncooperative. This gives you a chance to try a new things that you've learned to see it in action in real-life. You'll love it!

The pricing was not transparent; I was quoted $200/month over the phone, but in person, the price jumped to $270/month plus a $200 initiation fee. When I asked to try a class before committing, I was told that wasn't possible. The meeting focused heavily on "closing the deal" that day, using high-pressure tactics. Most concerningly, when I asked about the schedule for female instructors, the tone shifted and I was asked, "Why are you asking that?" It felt like a dismissive response to a reasonable question about a training environment. The salesperson also disparaged other local gyms, which felt unprofessional. In an activity where physical vulnerability and trust are key, this environment felt neither transparent nor supportive.

We had never taken a class, but I had read about CDK Krav Maga and we decided to give it a try. It was a great decision (especially as we have tried many different types of classes). We met with the owner DJ who took real time with us -- listening to our goals and explaining how Krav Maga builds confidence and practical self-defense skills, especially for women. We took a complementary class. Everyone made us feel so comfortable. The classes are instructional, not competitive, and people go at their own pace, which is something we also liked. The instructors are great. David worked with us initially and was knowledgeable and encouraging. DJ's wife Emma made the onboarding process so easy and welcoming. They were also incredibly flexible in helping us find a class schedule that worked for our busy lives. If you're interested in Krav Maga, CDK is a great place.

This review is from the viewpoint of a student…read more I joined Lee's Hapmudo in Annandale in February of 2012. At 44 years old and 20 years of marriage, my wife and I were told that we were expecting our very first child. My reasoning for joining martial arts was that I was too old, too slow, too overweight, and too out of shape to keep up with a little one, so... I had to get back into shape so that I could keep up with Jr. as he raced around the house. Instead of just hitting the treadmill or lifting weights, I thought this was a great opportunity to learn self defense while still getting back into shape. My search was pretty extensive. I visited many studios, sat through numerous classes, interviewed students, masters, and made cold calls to studios to see what they had to offer. All of the studios were superb and offered exactly what I was seeking: to get into shape and learn how to defend myself and family. Then I walked into Lee's Hapmudo in Annandale. Yes they emphasized getting into shape and learning how to defend oneself, but I noticed subtle differences while observing one of their classes. Not only were the students polite, the students even thanked each other and called each other "sir" or "ma'am" while bowing. I thought this was just one class, but as I sat through another class, and as I visited a second time, I realized that the students' respect for each other and camaraderie was something that was taught in every class. I even noticed the respect for each other, confidence, and camaraderie between students from the Clinton Hapmudo studio at a recent tournament. After extensive searching, I decided that Lee's Hapmudo in Annandale has what I am looking for AND MORE. To me, this studio is a complete package. If you want your children to learn respect for their elders and each other WHILE they learn to defend themselves and become confident contributors to society, Lee's Hapmudo in Annandale is the place. I can't wait to take Jr. to Lee's Hapmudo when he turns 3.

This week is our first week back and I didn't know how much I missed it until we began seeing all the familiar faces and warm embraces. Master Dodd and Master B know us by name and were quick to resume putting my daughter back in a position of leadership. Also the events are amazing from parents night out to Halloween parades and trunk or treat. We did three summer camps this summer and out of all of them we discussed how the children were more well behaved and the negative influence was not there compared to the other camps. This is sure fire a wonderful community and we are honored to be a part of it
