I especially liked the decorative metal stakes and the Japanese seed packets. There were many other seeds that were attractively packaged, with nice descriptions. I wanted to peruse the seed offerings, but the music was so loud, I could not focus or think about how a particular seed would work for me. The music apparently helps the workers get through the day, but it drives customers away. No one ever greeted me or offered assistance, and I was barely acknowledged when making a purchase. We thought we'd look around for a little while and then continue home to Chico. Instead, this ended up being the best part of our entire weekend. Rella Gadulka has owned and operated Simply Succulent since 1995, 31 years, and after spending time with her I completely understand why. You can't Google 31 years of hands-on experience and knowledge. Chico has a few big box stores where I can buy succulents, but they are basically all the same. Same plants, same varieties and nothing really different. Walking into Simply Succulent was a completely different experience. There were plants I had never seen before everywhere I looked. What impressed me even more was the way Rella helped me choose what to buy. When she found out I lived in Chico and knew how hot our summers get, she showed me what would survive and what wouldn't. She actually talked me out of buying some plants I wanted because she knew they wouldn't do well in our heat. I quickly figured out that Rella is very protective of her plants, and I loved that about her. She grows these plants herself and actually cares what happens to them when they leave with you. She isn't just trying to make a sale. She also knew I wanted to propagate, so she started showing me plants that already had lots of little "chicks" or babies growing around them. She showed me which ones I could take home, separate and eventually turn into dozens of plants. Instead of trying to sell me more plants, she was basically teaching me how to make more myself. I also loved that she had cuttings from so many of her plants. If you can't afford the larger established plant, you can buy a cutting and grow your own. It didn't matter to Rella if you were spending a few dollars on a cutting or several hundred dollars. She still took the time to help you. She even gave me her email and told me I could contact her anytime if I had questions once I got home. Who does that anymore? My love for succulents started 8 years ago after my daughter died. I wanted to keep fresh flowers at her cemetery site, but I couldn't afford to replace them every week. One day I noticed another person visiting their loved one had succulents around their site. I asked them about the plants because at the time I didn't even know what a succulent was. It didn't take me long before I had surrounded my daughter's site with succulents too. What started because I couldn't afford fresh flowers turned into one of the most healing things I could have ever done. I learned how to grow and propagate them and eventually started sharing them with other people who had lost someone they loved. Rella had no idea about any of this while she was helping me. She had no idea how much it meant when she was showing me plants covered in babies that I could turn into dozens more. I honestly could have stayed there all day listening to her and looking at plants. Unfortunately our 3-year-old grandson was getting fussy and apparently he didn't share Grandma's enthusiasm about spending the rest of the day at a succulent nursery. Then we went to pay. We had picked out several hundred dollars worth of succulents and that's when I saw the sign saying no cards, cash or checks only. My heart sank. I don't carry a checkbook anymore and didn't have that much cash with me. I honestly felt sick thinking we were going to have to leave all these plants behind. Rella didn't even bat an eye. She told us to take the plants home and send her a check Monday. I seriously couldn't believe what I was hearing. We were complete strangers. We had never been there before. We don't even live close. We live hours away in Chico and this woman was willing to let us drive away with several hundred dollars worth of her plants without paying her anything that day. Who the hell does that anymore? Rella does. She told us that this world needs to be more trusting. That literally gave me chills. What got me even more was when she told us that she has trusted other people to send her payment and some of them never did. Yet she still chooses to trust people and believe they will do the right thing. After 31 years in business, she hasn't let the people who took advantage of her change who she is. I just hope nobody else ever takes advantage of her kindness. Eight years ago a stranger at a cemetery introduced me to succulents during one of the hardest times of my life. Eight years later, another stranger trusted me enough to send me home with several hundred dollars worth of those same plants just because she believed we would keep our word. There are still some pretty damn good people in this world. By the time we left, Rella didn't feel like just the owner of a nursery we happened to stop at on our way home. She felt like someone we had somehow added to our family.

I have tried to hold off on this review since I don't usually post negative reviews, but I have been feeling so sad about my wedding flowers this past April that I felt I had to to help future brides. I initially chatted with her on the phone and all seemed well, I described to her the lush flowers I was hoping for and she seemed to know what she was doing and assured me that they would be how I was dreaming. I had a small family wedding, but I was willing to pay a lot for my flowers because I wanted a very lush and beautiful arch overlooking the ocean, a lush table garland with lots of flowers, and other pieces (just very lush in general). I emailed her pics of each of the statement pieces I wanted, and she told me that she could do it. I had asked for mostly white peonies with some blush and white garden roses with anemones with blue centers and greenery for all florals. Instead, I received cheap common roses, cheap babies breath, and only 2 peonies in ALL of my flowers. They was no consistency across the floral arrangements, there were purple flowers in most of them (I asked for blush pink), the arch was almost entirely bare leaving mostly metal showing, and the table garland was cheap, preordered greenery and undecorated with florals as I had asked and paid for. I was so sad on my wedding day and it disrupted getting ready time because my sister (and maid of honor) was sweet enough to hunt down the florist during makeup time, and ask if they were even the right flowers (!!), they were so different from what I had asked. Turns out Rosa (the actual florist) didn't even bother to show up and design my arch or add flowers to my garland, it was just one of her delivery people who zip tied the small groupings of flowers on the arch.. My sister and family told me that the flowers looked like someone at Safeway put them together. I would have given her 1 star, but she did give me a partial refund, even though the amount I paid didn't make up for the lack of quality, quantity, and artistic quality in the flowers I did receive. Go to a different florist if you want lush, beautiful flowers and a responsive florist who listens to what you're dreaming of. I'll post more comparison pics of my flowers and what I asked for when I get them back from my photographer.

Plus, they have the saw and yard care power tools shop. I gave them three stars because the staff just aren't always helpful. We consistently get inconsistent info about plants and shop services, no follow up re:special orders, and there are some staff we know to just avoid. Go knowing what you need to get, get it, and get out, and you'll be fine. Otherwise, it'll be hit or miss.

I live in Buffalo, NY. I am always on the lookout for rare perennials, or perennials that are zone 6 that aren't available in Western New York. I came across this nursery online in search of a Trachystemon orientalis that I read about in a gardening article. I was amazed by the variety of plants in the catalog. I placed an order of 16 plants. One of the plants, based on its natural growing season, was not going to be available for about one month. I received a personal phone call and email with options on how to process my order. Also, because my order was so large, the nursery worked with me to arrange more cost efficient shipping, which only added one day to the trip! Also, I had a concern, after I had placed my order, that one of the plants may not be hardy enough for my zone based on many diverse internet articles, some saying it was, some saying it wasn't. The nursery thoroughly researched the plant and the climate where I lived, including talking to customers who own the plant, to give me a recommendation on the findings. I have NEVER had a nursery go so far and beyond to help me. The communication was fast, very clear, by phone and email. The staff at this nursery are awesome. Prices and shipping are very fair. Next year, I will be placing my order early to get some of the species that are sold out. Looking forward to more repeat business. read more

Digging Dog is an amazingly good source for hard to find perennials. They are prompt and very helpful when you have a particular problem. I recently needed some plants on a deadline and they very kindly accommodated me at a busy time of the year. I will be placing the same review on the Yelp for Hare Creek NURSERY, as it looks like they have their own Yelp. You only need to read one or the other. (Or you can read both if it helps their business!) SO... I brought an old, neglected Poulan 4000 chainsaw to Hare Creek Nursery and Saw Shop in Ft. Bragg today. (We are moving to our place in the area permanently this summer after YEARS of visits and my wife growing up here and so on...) I brought it in for a service and sharpening at around 11:00am, after the saw sat unused for almost 20 years. (My little electric saw has sufficed over the years "down there.") The Woman at the counter was super helpful, and explained how the diagnostic fee worked and would be applied if the saw could be serviced, but she also gently let me know that the age of the saw and the lack of attention over 20 years could be an issue. After she told Suburban-Me why I couldn't fit a larger bar to it. Because I asked. (At least I knew what the bar was...) Said they would call me early next week with the news, as they weren't super busy. (Stoked! Because I actually called them last August, and was told I could drop said saw off but it might be 4-5 weeks before it was done. Which I now understand. And still should have just dropped off.) So maybe an hour and 15 minutes later, as my daughter and I were finishing lunch at Laurel's Deli, (another GREAT place with ROKKEN service), I got a call from Hare Creek Nursery and Saw Shop. (Because cell service!) Saw was done. Had some issues, but they got it sharpened up and running and should be good for a few more years of real work. I was kinda shocked. They HAD me for the sale of a new Husqvarna. But they salvaged my old saw. (Which was my Father's, and before that my Great Uncle's.) When I picked it up, the Senior Manager came out and told me that when I dropped it off, he overheard me say that I had some trees down on my property that were a problem. So he said he "put the shop on it since it was slow anyway." That is legit SERVICE, the way it should be. That is old-school CLASS, the way it USED to be. THAT is how you create a customer for LIFE. One who will his new Husqvarna from Hare Creek.

This is a great sale, and I've been to many plant sales at Botanic gardens [ UC, Tilden, Huntington, Quail ] All are terrific and have their specialties. And I guess that what the Mendocino College sale offers are plants close to my heart-- Calif natives, regional trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and veggies for the upcoming seasons! The sale began yesterday on Friday, and I put off going til it began raining, so I decided to do it on Sat. morning, and maybe John would like to go to. And of course it's raining even harder today, but no matter. After a warm breakfast [ got to have eggs on weekends!] we drove the 5 miles up to the college, and parked in the grass lot of the Dept of Agriculture. I had in my mind a budget of about $25. This seemed alot since plants are priced $1.50 for small 3" pot, $2 for a 6pak, $5 for a gal container. But you know there were 2 of us now and we both like alot of the same things, but a lot of different things too. John favors succulents, grasses-- so we had to get some of those too. With umbrella dripping and finally hair dripping too, we go from greenhouse to greenhouse then to open areas-- so much to choose from. I love Salvias/ sages and they must have had 2 dozen to choose from. The two I bought last year have grown immensely & are ready to bloom soon. So I bought 2 different ones this time. We started out in the veggie 'hall' with a small hand carried tray -- picked up 8 different tomato plants, 6 basils, peppers, pumpkin, squash. Now we needed a wheeled cart, because we picked up lavenders, creeping thymes, a sedge, Calif fushia-- oh the list goes on and on. The staff, who are students in the program, and the cultivators of all the plants, were extremely helpful & informative... in fact a couple enjoyed talking so much we had to break it off to finish shopping & get out of the rain. All plants are lush, healthy & perfect for our region. We blew my proposed budget. Not a surprise really. For all we bought, that filled 3 large boxes, was only $52.00. And they have a fall sale that I did miss last year. So I'm looking forward to that one too. Now once the rain is over [ no hurry on that, we are loving it] we get to deal with our clay soil to get all these new treasures planted.

I did leave without buying the grow tent i wanted that they said they had in stock, because when they went to look, they couldn't find them. just like the lights, i'm assuming they were there somewhere. or there computer systems needs updating. things moved slow... (laid back a bit) but i liked it, I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. one guy would try to help me, and he took off to go get answers, but would often not return, but it didnt bother me. they were busy, and i found him helping other people. Then i asked for help again, the person i asked, tried to help, but i could tell he really didnt know specifics enough to help me, but an unexpected employee "Matt" came in for a few minutes for whatever reason, and this guy asked Matt if he had time to help me. he was honest and said no, he was in a hurry and "it was his day off" He approached me im sure hoping he could answer my questions quickly and get going. He spent about 15 minutes with me. answered all my questions and really hit it out of the ball park. pros, epic staff great prices huge selection Cons for me they are about 50 miles away. I couldn't recommend a hydro store more. They have earned my repeat business, Highly recommended.

These people are amazing. The dirt is amazing. We use it every year for our... Many uses. This year I'm growing a huge veggie garden and using their new garden mix for amendment! I know They've loaded 100's of yards over the years into the back of my truck, and we have plenty of friends who have used it over the years. It's never been too hot, although it really is a good idea to water it in first.. One tomato plant got barely crispy around the edge once, and if u feel like the dirt is a little too hard after it sits in the sun (with no mulch) then just ask for a bag of perlite added for $20. U can add it to any amount of compost, they mix with the tractor. You will become friends with everyone who works there if u frequent the place. They really are awesome people. I do have to complain about the approximate 1 rubber glove that comes free with every yard. And a dorito's bag once. Get some trash cans people!
