We are blessed with a long and fruitful growing season and my go to shop to take advantage is Hare Creek. It's got a great location, a knowledgeable and personable staff to go along with an immense selection. Normally I'm one to ask far too many questions and be a challenge , but today it was just for one particular item. The staff member asked me what I was going to use it for and he helped guide me in the proper implementation. I've been going to HCN and the other area nurseries for the past 4 years. Compared to the other nurseries, HCN has a larger selection of plants, especially trees. Plus, they have the saw and yard care power tools shop. I gave them three stars because the staff just aren't always helpful. We consistently get inconsistent info about plants and shop services, no follow up re:special orders, and there are some staff we know to just avoid. Go knowing what you need to get, get it, and get out, and you'll be fine. Otherwise, it'll be hit or miss. read more

After having bought our mowers and trimmers "locally" from Hare Creek Nursery, we were VERY diligent about getting both mowers into the shop EVERY YEAR for service and maintenance. Every year the prices fluctuated depending on tires, batteries, new blades or whatever may have come up. We happily paid as we dropped off one and picked up the other, we even kept our receipts for each mower, each year. This year as we take the first mower (our newest) in we get a phone call from Steve (the owner) saying that he has bad news... our mower was completely out of oil and has blown up- can't be repaired. I find it ironic that just after Gov Newsom says that small engine gasoline motors will not be sold any longer in the state of California.... That our mower, the newest, can not be fixed. If our mowers were serviced properly by Hare Creek, if they kept better records (I.e. how many hours each mower had on them EACH AND EVERY TIME they were serviced), then Steve would have known that we hadn't done anything for this problem to happen because neither mower was used that much in any year. So, instead of being a big man and looking over the paperwork, he stated that it was completely our fault as our driving was wreck less. I'm sorry Steve, my grandfather was a mechanic his whole life and instilled in us the necessity of taking care of engines!!! There was NEVER any oil on the floor of our tractor shed, the mower always stored inside. I noticed a Better Business Bureau sign in the window... another funny story... the BBB doesn't know who Hare Creek Nursery in Fort Bragg, CA is!!! NO LISTING AT ALL IT GETS BETTER!!!! Steve refused to answer our phone calls, had his wife who works at another business call us and when we walked into the shop he scurried out the side or back door every time. We are not the only ones this year to hear this terrible news, I've heard of several others in the area who have had this same phone call. I believe Steve is trying to rid us on the coast of these horrible machines 1: so as not to continue maintaining them 2: make a bit of money selling the battery powered that most of us rural folks can't get our properties done in a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, it is time for me to start watching UTube videos on this Husq mower and repair it myself. Steve honey, women are not as foolish or stupid as you think!!! read more

Hare Creek Nursery and Saw Shop ROKK! (I'm an 80's Dude. Trust me, it's the TOP compliment!) The story "grows," so please read on. OH... I will be placing the same review on the Yelp for Hare Creek SAW SHOP, as it looks like they have their own Yelp. You only need to read one or the other. (Or you can read both if it helps their business!) SO... I brought an old, neglected Poulan 4000 chainsaw to Hare Creek Nursery and Saw Shop in Ft. Bragg today. (We are moving to our place in the area permanently this summer after YEARS of visits and my wife growing up here and so on...) I brought it in for a service and sharpening at around 11:00am, after the saw sat unused for almost 20 years. (My little electric saw has sufficed over the years "down there.") The Woman at the counter was super helpful, and explained how the diagnostic fee worked and would be applied if the saw could be serviced, but she also gently let me know that the age of the saw and the lack of attention over 20 years could be an issue. After she told Suburban-Me why I couldn't fit a larger bar to it. Because I asked. (At least I knew what the bar was...) Said they would call me early next week with the news, as they weren't super busy. (Stoked! Because I actually called them last August, and was told I could drop said saw off but it might be 4-5 weeks before it was done. Which I now understand. And still should have just dropped off.) So maybe an hour and 15 minutes later, as my daughter and I were finishing lunch at Laurel's Deli, (another GREAT place with ROKKEN service), I got a call from Hare Creek Nursery and Saw Shop. (Because cell service!) Saw was done. Had some issues, but they got it sharpened up and running and should be good for a few more years of real work. I was kinda shocked. They HAD me for the sale of a new Husqvarna. But they salvaged my old saw. (Which was my Father's, and before that my Great Uncle's.) When I picked it up, the Senior Manager came out and told me that when I dropped it off, he overheard me say that I had some trees down on my property that were a problem. So he said he "put the shop on it since it was slow anyway." That is legit SERVICE, the way it should be. That is old-school CLASS, the way it USED to be. THAT is how you create a customer for LIFE. One who will be getting a new Husqvarna from Hare Creek. read more

We've passed this place countless times, not bothering to stop, as it didn't look like they had much of a nursery. So one day recently we decided to drop in searching for some heaths and heathers. What a nice surprise! The nursery is so much larger than we saw from the highway and they had a LOT of varieties. We had been ordering heaths from a mail order source, as most local nurseries carry just a few varieties which we already have. Hare Creek had an excellent selection of many additional varieties we bought to add to our collection. Prices are reasonable and the selection and health of plants excellent! The nursery folks provide helpful advice and suggestions - hard to leave without a trunk full of plants. read more

During the recent Public Safety Power Shutoff no one in Fort Bragg had power, and very few businesses were open. Even though Hare Creek Nursery was closed, Nick was on the premises and saw us out front hoping to buy a box of bone meal. He sold us what we needed out the side door of the adjacent saw shop. I purchase most of my plants and soil here--especially seed potatoes for my garden each spring. This is a wonderful nursery for locals as well as out-of-towners looking for some interesting plants to bring home from the coast. They have a great selection as well as excellent service. They also just changed their hours so they are open on Sundays, too. read more

I'm just really disappointed as I had my heart set on getting a Pink Pearl apple tree from this nursery. My husband stopped in mid December and inquired about the trees, he was told by a man that they would be getting some in a few weeks and told to check back later. We actually stopped about five days later when we were passing by and I asked about them to a different man (who remembered my husband asking the other guy the first time he came in) he also said to check back later. We just stopped in today to see if they had gotten them in and the guy my husband had first asked in December said they still weren't in, it would be a couple more weeks and asked if our name was on the list and we said no...he then says all five of the trees they are getting in have already been spoken for and they wouldn't be getting any in again until next year! I don't understand why neither of the men suggested we put our names in (I had no idea they would "reserve" trees) otherwise I would have had my name added! I am SO disappointed with what I consider to be poor customer service. I guess I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Before I take my dog into the nursery I check to see where the cat is. That is a good pet owner!!!! I have been in the store several times with my Jack Russell Terrier. Now for the staff -- EVERY time I am in there I always have questions and the staff is very helpful. I will continue to recommend Hare Creek Nursery and its staff to everyone. read more

I feel obligated to alert the buying pubic to a big problem i had with Hare Creek Nursery in fort Bragg, last spring. I purchased a gift certificate for my mom by phone with my credit card, knowing this is a nursery where she has shopped for thirty years or so. Though now retired from gardening for others, she is still an avid gardener always in need of supplies. Mom was very pleased, and soon went to Hare Creek to redeem my gift certificate. When she brought her intended purchases to the sales counter, she was asked if she had brought the gift certificate they mailed her, but she had misplaced it. She assumed they would have no problem honoring the gift, with my credit card transaction on record. However, without the card, which had no warning message that it had to be presented to at time of purchase, she was refused my gift to her. This occurred even though the sales clerk and manager both knew her as a customer of longstanding, and there are no other people with our last name in their small town, AND several other customers spoke up on her behalf. She had to use her own funds for her purchases while my gift money was withheld. Only after a phone call to the reluctant (and downright hostile) manager did they agree to honor my gift to her. Why Hare Creek Nursery would chose to embarrass my mother and withhold my monetary gift to her simply makes no sense and is a bad business practice. I wanted to warn anyone considering a similar gift transaction to find a friendlier local nursery that understands good customer relations. I certainly would not have have dealt with this business if I had know they would withhold my gift and cause such senseless difficulties for my elderly parent. read more

First off.... Carla, the manager is great. She is knowledgeable, helpful and patient! I have a bed and breakfast inn and count on Hare Creek for almost all my garden's needs. There are certain annuals I use each year and Carla will special order them or grow them each year for us. Great service, great people and they stand behind their plants too! read more

I have been buying plants at Hare Creek for years. Carla and Nick and all the staff have been over-the-top helpful to me. The plants are always of the top quality and if Carla even suspects that a plant is not up to snuff, she won't let me buy it and instead finds another. She has ordered all kinds of obscure plants for me and gone out of her way to find the exact thing that I want. I can't say enough about this nursery. The prices are always fair. read more

On May 6th my friend and I and his Jack Russell Terrier were in the nursery yard shopping when we were attacked by a black cat that resides there. My friend and I suffered multiple cuts, scratches and bites. The staff offered no assistance and actually found the event amusing. I asked for a first aid kit and was pointed to a dirty bathroom where I found their kit on the floor. After cleaning our wounds, I asked the staff if the cat had it's shots. I was assured that the cat was vaccinated, lived on the property and hated dogs. The wounds were so bad that we had to go to the Mendocino clinic where we got treatment and tetanus shots. We were both put on antibiotics. In an effort to protect others, I called animal control to report the event. When animal control called the owner, she was very rude and defensive, claiming that we caused the problem. She stated that we were never to shop in her store again. This place is unsafe to the general public and I would highly recommend shopping elsewhere. read more

Hauled my mower on back of truck to get tune up fixed... Dragged it all the way home and guess what it ran exactly like it did when I brought it in???? A big fat waste if $$$$$ and time!!!!!! Was pure rip off!!!!!!!!!!!! Would never bring a machine to this outfit again!!!!! Lousy work and lousy lousy lousy repair job!!!!!!!
