I had been doing my taxes with James Wyckoff for 16 years. Nothing complex, schedule C and…read morepersonal. This year, I called him to ask a question before submitting my numbers. He said he was up to his ears and could not look at my files. He said he was going to be around next morning. I called him the next morning and asked if he could look at my email with the question. He said again he was up to his ears and told me to just ask my question. I replied that I needed him to look at the document, he wouldn't know what I was talking about without looking at the same page. He was too busy for that. I asked him when would be a good time, I had already called the day before, he told me that morning would be better. In response he told me to go find another accountant. He told me that the last two years they had to issue amended tax returns. (I didn't say anything to him, but yes they did, because they missed the amount of taxes I indicated I had paid on the one-page summary submitted.) He then said that every year there are complications. (Complications? Taxes are complicated. That's why there are accountants.) I called Jim's daughter Jennifer, who I had been dealing with as well in the last two years, to plea my case. To look for a new accountant two weeks before the deadline is not a easy task, I thought. They also were the only people I had dealt with and I was scared to not find someone good on a short notice. She told me she was on another call and would call me back in 30-45 minutes. She never did. These people are unprofessional to say the least. Well, as my aunt said, I discovered there are more accountants than there are stray dogs. Since, in Mr. Wyckoff's words, he is "up to his ears", you better go find someone else who welcomes your business. My new accountant not only schedules a yearly meeting, but encourages a mid-year conversation, at no extra charge.
