I love a barber who isn't afraid to make decisions when I say "do whatever you think would look good." And it looks great. So, for the last few years, I've been growing my hair out and not getting regular trims. I just hadn't found anyone I trusted to help me maintain my lovely locks. So, after noticing my lovely locks had horribly split ends, I knew it was time to seek out help. On the recommendation of a friend, I booked an appointment with Emily. And boy howdy, I am sure glad that I did! She was super easy to chat with and gave some super great advice. I left behind about 4-5inches of damaged hair and left with a super cute hair cut and some great shampoo/conditioner. I will definitely be coming back! read more

I wholeheartedly approve of this barber shop. Since moving to Portland about 5 months back, one man has kept me looking my best, and that's Adam. Combined with his friendly demeanor and communicative nature, his skills with the shears and razor kept me coming back to his previous employer. Now, they've compelled me to follow him to Dillinger's, where he's one-half of this kick-ass barbershop operation. You should probably check him out yourself. Dillinger's has a pretty interesting setup. It actually shares a space with a beauty parlor that caters to African American women. The tatted hipsters getting their beards trimmed and women getting elaborate braids make for unlikely bedfellows, but it definitely works. On the side that is Dillinger's, you'll get your classic movies on a flatscreen, complimentary beer or shot, and general olden-timey decor. The music is generally good, as these people have good taste. You shouldn't let somebody cut your hair if they have bad taste. At least I don't. As I said, Adam's been cutting my hair for a while now. He cleans me up great, with a sharp looking skin fade and hard part. He also tames my wily beard into something that belongs more on the face of a 30something professional rather than a crazed survivalist. He takes his time, with lots of small touches that make the experience really stand out. All in all it's almost a 90 minute process and I leave looking great and feeling relaxed. It almost seems like a fella's version of spa day, and the $38 he charges for that combo of services is more than reasonable. This town is lousy with barbershops, and as the chains rapidly expand to keep up, it seems that the quality of their employees and services starts to drop. I like that Dillinger's is small and plans to stay that way, focused on quality rather than quantity. I can't imagine being any happier with a barber. read more

Literally an hour after my fresh cut I had to log onto Yelp to write a review! Let me add that I've been out of the Yelp game for almost 2 years now which is pretty much the same amount of time that I've been growing out my hair. I decided that I wanted to clean it up a bit and get a trim but was extremely nervous.. I mean I've never had my hair this long before and I've invested a lot of time into growing it out. Anyways I stopped being a *insert cat emoji here* and decided to get it cut. My friend recommended this place to me and he's always looking fresh. (Angel if you're reading this shout out to you my brotha.) To start off they have I think 3 barbers. Adam, Patrick and Emily. All of which you need to make an appointment with prior. You can do it on their website. I went with Emily since she's a girl and probably has worked with longer hair before. My experience- Finding the shop was a little confusing. It's on Alberta street but there is no actual sign that says Dillingers. Just a shop that said "tease your hair here." I was like "what??" But walked in anyways. Emily was waiting for me; We shook hands introduced ourselves and cut right to the chase. *pun alert*. My haircut session took around 25 minutes. She was very thorough while cutting, paying attention to the details. Our conversation was super casual. Learned that she's been doing this for 20+ years. I was more than satisfied with my end result! I told y'all I had to get onto Yelp right away! I expect to see Emily again eventually. read more

I just moved to Portland a few months ago and have been searching for a place to get a solid hair cut and beard trim. My search stopped today. I had the best hair cut experience of my life today. Joshua at Dillinger's Barber Shop was absolutely phenomenal. The service that I received was second to none and the end result was fantastic. He took great care to meticulously cut my hair and trim my beard. I have a wild Asian beard and he was able to make it look amazing. The conversation that I had was also wonderful. I had a shop in Arizona that I was very loyal to and had some amazing experiences with, but nothing as great as Joshua and Dillinger's. Josh was very good with my son.. he took the time to make sure that little man was comfortable and not too scared by the unprecedented presence of a stranger with sharp objects near his head. Hands-Down the best haircut I've gotten in 1.5 years of living in PDX. I went on a whimsical and yelp reviews and was able to get in within 15 min. Somewhat unusual for the stature of this cut. I got in with Joshua. I was able to literally sit down say a few things of what I wanted. He was able to far exceed my expectations. I am so glad that I found this place. Cool ass barber shop! We were in town visiting and stopped by without an appointment around 5:00 PM. Emily was available and offered him a shot of whiskey or beer after seating him. Whoa, sweet! She made the conversation feel natural and gave us plenty ideas on what to do, see, and eat in Portland while being very careful and detailed in her work. She was completely honest and make jokes about how much hair my boyfriend had, how his head wasn't symmetrical, and how he had a bogus haircut! I LOLed at all of her comments because they were true. He has a TON of thick hair that defies gravity, he's probably busted his head way too many times in his life so you can feel the grooves in the scalp, and he used to get $free.99 haircuts by his teammate who is self-taught. Her intentions were very genuine, and there was no reason to take offense. She addressed these problems by skillfully using clippers to buzz away 5 pounds of hair and to correct his uneven part line, sculpted with sheers to mask his scalp wrinkles, and cleaned up the edges with a straight razor. It was my boyfriend's first experience with a straight blade, and I'm sure he was giggling with joy inside. It was $26 before tip. My boyfriend has paid both way less and way more for a haircut, but he's never had it done this well. This place was SO Portland, and we loved our experience here! read more

It's odd to review a barber shop on here as I'm really reviewing the tonsorial artist (that's a fancy thing to call a barber... my barber taught me it); I could care less where I get my hair did as long as the person doing it kicks ass. And Adam does kick ass. He's been cutting my hair for around two years now. Prior to that (that's 31 years if you're counting), I didn't give a damn about my hair and it showed. I've got a difficult mop up there, which he's trimmed and sculpted into something I can be proud of. Patrick is the other barber on duty and from the few cuts I've seen him do, you can't really go wrong with either guy. Online booking is cake (pretty much required for a F-Su slot at this point), there are some bike staples right outside, and sharing the shop with a salon broadens my musical horizons with each visit. Pass on the big name barbershops in town, which all seem to be more interested in taking over the world a la Hair Cuttery that providing the best possible service, and get your haircut at Dillinger's. First off i will say what a great cut. Been to many places in Portland. Joshua cut my hair. Not over the top friendly at all, but quick, efficient, and experienced. Unfortunately the one star is motivated by their political nonsense being shoved in your face at every turn. As if by going there you are embarking on their professed resistance against Americas current administration. Everything from Joshua's Occupy shirt to the shops banners and decor. Alot of it constituting mindless attempts at motivating ones to see the light. UNFORTUNATE. I believe in freedom and the ability to exercise that, hence this review. All of the staff are friendly and skilled (shout out to Reid, who took great care of me when I was in a bind and Emily wasn't available); their shop is always clean, tidy and welcoming; and I recommend anyone to use the products they make in-house. This was my first time coming here and Emily did an amazing job. Emily is very friendly, easy to talk to and genuine. I plan to make her my regular barber from here on out and never go back to my old place. I feel like I can't even go back after getting a haircut here since the bar is set so high. I wasn't quite sure how to explain the haircut I wanted and she walked me through what she had envisioned. Emily took her time and didn't rush to her next appointment. She wanted to dedicate the whole 45 minutes to 1 hour she had to make sure everything was clean and lined up. I left knowing that I got a very precise and clean haircut. Emily is the best! I had never been in a barbershop before and so I was wondering if I would feel unwelcome as a female. Well, not the case. Such a better experience than going to a salon. The waiting area was quiet and relaxing. My haircut was awesome. I didn't feel obligated to gossip with my hairdresser or talk about girly things. I like the shop, the vibe, everything. However, when one of the barbers advertises as having a focus on curly hair--I would expect that barber to know better than to do a wet cutting (especially when the customer voices concern). Curly and ethnic hair should be dry cut. Luckily hair grows back quick enough, as I now have shorter hair than requested, and the curls hide some of the lopsidedness. I think it is a neat shop, and though I'll need to go elsewhere, I would still encourage others to try it (especially with straight hair or looking for shorter trendy or iconic styles). read more

Hands down, the most self-assured, expert, and easy-going barbers this side o' the Pecos. As of this evening, these two are the only professionals that'll be tending to this 'do in true fashion. Immediately after setting foot in the place, they both greeted me like human beings: sincerely and with genuine interest, and even though they were full up with a line of gents waiting, they made me feel a part of the group and welcome anytime. So, I gladly signed up to come back in a couple hours, after running a few errands, and I must say: the cut that Adam turned out is beyond my expectations. Not to mention that the lady friend is fond of it, starry-eyed and throwing looks at me since I got home. But I'm happy to report that I have no such issues with Emily at Dillingers. The conversation was genuine, wide-ranging and flowed easily, and her attention to detail extended to continuing to trim my hair after she'd styled it with some product, to ensure the shape was just right. Emily did mention that the space can get quite crowded and noisy on the weekends, so if you're after a relaxed experience, a mid-week appointment might be your best bet. I stopped in to get a skin fade and line up by Cort. She's a pro. Cut was super clean as well as the hot shave. Oh, and a nice shoulder massage to top it off. The shop is top notch. Definitely a Traditional style barbershop. Also, they're open on Sundays late which is a plus. read more

I recently started going to Bryan at Dillingers for haircuts and was extremely impressed. He is personable, thorough and gave me the best haircut of my life.
