Living in Southeast Portland my entire life has been a great experience, especially when it comes to supporting local businesses. I definitely understand that sometimes people have bad days or are just in their own world...that being said I sat down in a man's chair they call gator at Brooks barbershop on division. I clearly stated in my appointment that I was there for a sideburn neckline trim, clearly described what kind of shape I wanted for my neckline, even pointed out another customers hair as an example. 10 minutes later, this guy they called gator, said he was done. The shape was clearly not there. The neckline was uneven, and the trim was patchy at best. To which gator responded "my bad". I chuckled and asked him to please clean up the lower part of the neckline and I would be out of there telling him that I would have to razor the line out myself to get it straight. Then the guy tried me 30 bucks when it clearly states 15 for neckline trim, which is what I got ( patchy, uneven and not the shape or design I asked for. I gave the guy $15 plus a five dollar tip and left disgruntled and unhappy. Every other time for the past three or so years, I've gotten great service happy people talkative, genuine, substance to the people behind you on the chair. Rooks may have been one of the spots to restore the man's barbershop in the Portland scene. If it is important to you to get a beer while being shorn, go for it. My hair guru is on parental leave, so I stopped in here recently. Ok cut. Not cheap but not expensive. Not low quality and not dialed in either. It's not a 2 star Supercuts and my hair is growing in ok. 3.5 stars. read more

In a vast sea of stereotypically "unique" barbershops that litter the Portland landscape, one rises above the others, poking its well-cut head of hair above the waves of skinny jeans and craft beer that form the endless depths of the barbershop ocean - Rooks. This was the second haircut I've had since moving to Portland, the first was a horrific nightmare of a botched side part I received on the recommendation of a roommate (whom I no longer trust, nor speak to) at a chain barbershop I had never heard of before. It was seriously one of the worst haircuts of my life, and right before a job interview, too (still got the job though). Ian at Rooks was a much needed improvement. I told him what I wanted and he was able to translate it into the barber-ese that I am not fluent in (I don't know what a no. 4 is, dudes). The dude not only knows how to translate from American English into barber-ese, but is able to execute the haircut with aplomb. In addition to actually being able to execute the cut, he made the experience pleasant with just enough chit chat that I felt comfortable letting him run his skilled shears through my hair, but not enough talk that it felt forced or was taxing on me. As someone who spends 99% of their workday talking and being talked at, it was a comfortably quiet haircut. I appreciated his inquisitiveness and candor as much as I did his silence. It was a truly remarkable balance between the two. All in all, I definitely recommend this place for its artsy and positive vibe, skilled barbers, and genuine demeanor. A haircut here costs much more than I'm used to paying (I used to have a haircut guy in my hometown that did excellent work for cheap) but the price is equal to other places in Portland and I left feeling like I paid for a quality haircut, not "an experience" that some places here seem to make you pay for. TL:DR - this is a quality barbershop with genuine folks who like to talk about their dogs, and it's all at a reasonable price. read more

I used to really enjoy making the trek to come out here. I scheduled my last visit at Noon for a cut and shave. At 20 minutes past the hour, there was little acknowledgment that they were ruining late, and not a single apology. They were spending most of their time talking about doing drugs and drinking. And really, I don't care what you do in your free time, but if I've taken time out of my day to be there on time, the last thing I need to hear is how high you like to get... and watch you waste time without even saying "hey sorry we are running behind." Hmm -- my first haircut was AWESOME. Dude took his time, asked questions, was super careful. When I realized he was legit, I gave him leeway to do as he wished. This place is legit. I've had a lot of bad or OK cuts from other shops with otherwise talented barbers. My hair is tricky to cut because I have a double cowlick and fine hair. I just figured my hair sucked and I wasn't able to do anything with it. I'm grateful to have found Rooks. I usually see Bill and every time he cuts my hair it's the best haircut I've ever had. The first time I came to Portland my friend insisted I get a proper haircut (damn dirty Iowa technohippy!) and the Sunday I flew out, he dragged me to breakfast and we searched for a proper barber. Our first choices were full-up, apparently, but they had open chairs at the Broadway location, so I got my haircut, and swore I'd never get my hair cut anywhere but Portland again. That decision was reinforced when I visited again several months later, and a different location, and got the same stylist as the first time. Three months later I cannot remember her name but she smiled, ask me if I wanted a beer (yes please!) and got me looking fresh. The hot towel to finish things off made me feel proper and ready to fly out again. Nothing quite like strutting through the airport with a super-fresh stylin haircut from one of the ladies at Rooks. I might have to commit to the $400 haircut - $35 for the cut itself, and $350 for the plane ticket. Worth it. read more

I have had experience with Justin, Brian, and Bill over at the other location and have never been disappointed (except for the fact that they were unable to provide a midget playing a cello standing next to a giant playing a ukulele as requested.) Decided to make an appt. with Justin at the new location for last Friday and walked in to find out I had made it for another day. The online site apparently takes you to the first available day by default and not the current day. Bill was there and was happy to get me in after finishing up with another client. Did a great job and I was able to relax with a beer in between the mad rush trying to orchestrate a surprise party for my girlfriend. I have funky hair and they always do a great job. So, being new to Portland, I had a very short list of priorities: 1. Find the best coffee in town. 2. Find the best bar in town. 3. Find the best haircut in town. I mean, I can't speak for everyone and I'm in no way credible enough to rate based on other shops, but my experience was phenomenal. Between the amazing, and COMFORTABLE, conversation that I was able to have with my barber and his coworker, I actually forgot that my hair was changing into something completely mysterious. I let him do what he knows best and he didn't face me towards the mirror. At first I didn't know what I was going to do with myself, but I literally felt like I was in the car with someone who has never gotten a ticket in his life, not for being careful, but for being confident. On top of a great atmosphere, my haircut turned out great. They offer a 7 day grace period so that you can get used to your cut and if there's something you don't enjoy too much about it, get in there and have them fix it! My husband and I just moved to Portland and he is VERY specific about how his hair is cut so finding someone who really fits the bill is a tough task. We looked online and to our surprise we quickly found Rooks! There are several barbers at Rooks so we randomly picked Will who turned out to be an absolutely perfect fit! He is very easy to talk to and you can tell he really enjoys his craft! My husband and I both love the atmosphere (yes I come with him) and it's nice when I don't feel alienated or like an outcast waiting at the barbershop with him. They provide free drinks (beer, water, coffee) which is awesome because I get one every single time and happily enjoy it while I wait! OK, I've tried coming here twice and both times I've walked away feeling like a fool and looking like one, too. The barbers don't really bother listening to what kind of haircut you want, and just seem fixated on providing the same hipster doofus look. These guys should spend less time on stocking their beer fridge and thinking about what tattoos make them look most edgy and more time actually listening to what their customers want done with their cuts. Just a chill, relaxing, Portland vibe and they have free drinks while you waiting. You can also book an appointment online, I would suggest that. Expect superior quality and detail with your haircut, they spend a good 30+ mins for each haircut. It's not cheap, $30+ but well worth it. I highly recommend Rooks. It was comfortable, clean, old school and unpretentious while also Portland cool - they offered me beer and were super chill. Most importantly, I got a really good haircut. I usually let my hair grow for a year or more and then let a friend chop it all off for better or worse. This time, on a complete whim, I decided to go to an actual barber. I was the last appointment of the day, but when I walked in with my shoulder-length mess and told him to "make me look cool", Ian was completely unphased. He calmly and quickly chopped it off and gave me a really good short haircut that has been getting me daily compliments since. The whole thing took half an hour, but never felt rushed. I went into Rook's last week for a haircut, having not had one within the past two months or so prior to my visit, feeling rather primitive and having just moved to Portland. I sat down and was instantly assured, by a haircut Cory was giving to a lad of about eight or so (despite the difference in the texture of our respective hairs'), that I would be in for something new. Since my hair isn't the type to be gelled with pomade or product, I was a tad apprehensive -- again, only a tad, and not for long -- I blame the beautiful hairstyles ubiquitous in Portland for my bias. Cory went to work, and his finished product was the appreciated nine/ten I seldom find. Perhaps the ten is being able to be ignorant to one's style; I'm just a joe who went in for a cut, not an aficionado by any standards, spiritual or earthly. He also managed to do all of this without the washing my hair prior to the trim; the dryness of my hair inhibited him on no levels, but yes now my hair has levels, or layers, as the term is used in the barbering world. A typical haircut for me concludes with a reminder of what my variable dresser missed, in reference to general weight, specifically. This time, however, I resolved with a "this is unusual" and then a "wow it's a gem" after a bit of contemplation, provided that the cut was a bit more liberal (referring to quantity, not stereotype) than the usual. Fine job, Cory. Had I taken that shot, I'm sure the "holy shit this really is a gem" would have kicked in even sooner. :) read more
