Review Highlights - Dining Wok Shanghai Restaurant

The seasoning was perfect and not overly salty as most Chinese restaurants.

Dropped in here for lunch…read more The decor was clean and modern, but there was some packaging lying around on the front tables. I ordered the cucumber salad and seafood fried rice with XO sauce, as well as tea. The tea came first, with a very nice Western style porcelaib pot and cup and saucer. Elegant! The cucumber salad had an interesting dressing, slightly sweet, but with a healthy amount of garlic. Somehow, for me, it worked. The cucumber was very fresh and served as a nice neutral base to build the flavors on. I was warned when I ordered the fried rice that it was spicy. Well, it was slightly tingly, but nothing major for my tastes. The rice was soft and loose and flavourful. Surprised by what looked like short grain rice. The rice came with some kind of whitefish, shrimp, and scallops. Also very finely diced red and green peppers, carrots, and onions. It was very flavorful, the seafood was very fresh and perfectly cooked, and tasty without being salty. I got a refill of hot water for my tea without asking, which was very appreciated. Price for one person was a bit high, but portions were large enough for sharing between two, and compared to other prices on the White Rock Beach, this wasn't too bad. A good spot for some good Chinese good!

The location across from the beach was enjoyable and relaxing. The only thing keeping me from give five star was the lack of servers.. only one person was doing mostly anything.. so the service was very slow.. but still way worth the wait.

So. If you aren't into very authentic Northern Chinese food, this will be a hard sell. The place…read moreis a little dark, service can be on the slower side, and there's not a lot of English. If you're not scared, read on. We went here for dinner and did not need a reservation - the name in and of itself is probably a bit of a turnoff, but don't let it stop you. There was no wait, but you can also make reservations if you are so inclined. It has only a bit of decor and could use better lighting, but the place is pretty small comparatively. We were able to sit immediately and were greeted with tea (you have to request water). We got apps - spring rolls and wontons in spicy sauce. Let me tell you. The spring rolls were HOT - everything that comes out is freshly off the wok so be careful or you'll burn your mouth - but that's really the best part of those. Nothing to write home about. The wontons, however, are a dish I'd order four of and just eat as a meal. Definitely worth getting. For mains, we got the stir fried beef with cumin and the shredded pork with chili and garlic sauce. I can see why they're some of the more popular dishes, although the beef was a bit more onion heavy than I would have liked. they are spicy Sichuan style, but not too spicy that you don't get the other flavors. Also, the "spicy sauces" are a bit more spice than just spicy - like there's star anise and cinnamon and other "spiceful" flavors, and it's one of my favorite things. If you have one of the servers that speaks English pretty well, you should ask if the meat has bones in it so you aren't surprised when it comes out. Rice is $3 and that feels a bit eyeroll, but we did end up with leftovers, and can make rice at home. We plan to go back to try other things - maybe not the very adventurous stuff on the menu - but definitely some of the other dishes.

I am writing to express my disappointment and concern regarding the experience my coworker and I…read morehad at your restaurant today. My coworker and I have been regular customers for almost a year because we genuinely enjoyed the food and the overall experience. Unfortunately, our visit today was extremely upsetting because of the way we were treated by the manager, Ms. Yang (possibly Rihanna Yang). During our visit, there was a misunderstanding regarding our order. A chicken dish was brought to our table, but we had not ordered it. I immediately explained that we did not order this dish and that I do not eat chicken due to an allergy/preference. We had ordered a fish dish instead. Instead of calmly checking the order or trying to resolve the misunderstanding, Ms. Yang repeatedly insisted, in a very loud voice in front of other customers, that we had ordered the chicken dish and that we had to eat it. She continued saying that we had to accept the dish and pay for it, even after I explained multiple times that we did not order it. The situation became very uncomfortable and embarrassing. Other customers were watching as she raised her voice at us. I politely asked her several times to please calm down and not speak to us in that manner, but she continued insisting and arguing. I even confirmed with my assistant, who was sitting with me, that neither of us had ordered the chicken dish, and she also confirmed that she had not heard us order it. A professional way to handle this situation would have been to apologize for the misunderstanding, check the order, and offer a solution. Instead, we felt pressured and disrespected. By the end of the interaction, I had completely lost my appetite and could no longer enjoy the food we had ordered. After asking her to remove the dish, she eventually took it away but told us that we were no longer welcome at the restaurant. After being loyal customers for almost a year, I found this response extremely disappointing and unacceptable. I understand that mistakes can happen in restaurants, but the way a situation is handled is what defines good customer service. Unfortunately, the way this matter was handled was unprofessional, embarrassing, and made us feel unwelcome. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and that appropriate steps are taken to ensure customers are treated with respect and professionalism in the future.
