We engaged Direct Tax Relief after receiving a massive penalty from the IRS for an information return. The cost for engaging them wasn't cheap, but was a fraction of the penalty. It took many months for IRS to respond to their letter (partly due to the government shutdown that was going on during the time). Also what I needed done was 1 form that I needed to fill out myself and sign and send in. I can provide anyone proof of what the issue was and scope of work was. Arman, (Tax Attorney) was an absolute pleasure to work with. He was great in his communication and got the job done. We owed almost 60K in back taxes and we were able to settle for next to nothing (literally). It took almost 14 months (which was not by fault of the company, just a part of the process w/IRS) but it was totally worth the wait and worth every penny! Matthew (tax agent...filed our taxes) was also a pleasure to work with. Very very nice, responsive and helpful. Sales on the other hand, was not very good in communication (very important because totally separate from attorney and tax agent) . We got off to a terrible start after I had hired them and paid, and 1 year later my opinion of him didn't change much. I will give him credit that when I made my initial call...the services that they promised to provide...were delivered in the end. Also, after the miscommunication and my initial disappointment, fee's in regards to the misunderstanding were waved. We also did everything electronically so I never had to step foot in their offices which was a definite plus. Before hiring DTR, ask the sales rep lots of questions, get clarity, if you want Federal and State taxes filed, be sure to communicate that and get a quote BEFORE making a payment. Lastly, understand the terms and length of your contract (ex: 1 year and again ask questions) because it WILL likely take longer than that to settle an offer and if it does...they WILL request more $$$...which I understand...but you don't want to get hit over the head last minute for that request (like I did)...especially if you are just sitting and waiting to hear from the IRS. Communicate and follow up with your attorney frequently to find out where you are w/your negotiation (that job is totally up to you and can save you the additional cost in the event that your case takes longer than a year). & if you are anything like me...you don't have thousands of dollars to throw away. For 3 years I fought with the IRS, and they kept changing my assigned officer, so I got nowhere. The last officer I was assigned would never respond when I left multiple messages, then 6 months later out of the blue my bank accounts are being seized or my employer is notifying me about a garnishment. I'd call the IRS, explain the issue, and they'd return my money or release the garnishment. Then along came Direct Tax Relief. I can't say they were a white knight who fended off the IRS overnight, but just over a year later I finally have a payment arrangement locked in with the IRS and I can once again breath as I know where I stand. To be honest, there were some rough spots dealing with a couple of the people and their antiquated views on technology and the exchange of personal documents, but there were a couple who were willing to use a secured online file share so that I could send them my information securely. Originally I had taken 2 stars off of the review due to some issues I felt they weren't addressing, but the owner contacted me a couple days later thanking me for raising the issue and he has already tasked people with resolving the problem - so while my case is already done, the reason I originally gave them a 2 star review is no longer valid so I can give them the 4 stars I really wanted to give them in the first place. read more

Had a very bad experience. First of all, I paid them twice to handle my audit and nothing ever got done. I still had to hire another company to help me complete my audit. I also asked for my documents back and had to drive to their office to pick it up and they forgot to give me one of the boxes. Waste of time and money. All the good reviews here are fake. You can tell because they all hit the normal infomercial bullet points. ("Didn't even have to talk to the IRS! Direct Tax Relief handled the case for us completely! The IRS! What a nightmare!" etc.) Make sure you scroll down and look at all the hidden negative reviews which are much more authentic. They took our $3000 and did nothing to solve our tax problems, except maybe make it worse for us. Due to an error with TurboTax we were audited for a prior year and found to have owed almost $20,000 plus about $5000 in IRS penalties and interest. Our belief has always been that TurboTax was completely at fault for this mistake. After a year of trying to get it resolved through TurboTax and negotiating a payment plan for $200 a month, we decided to hire a proper tax attorney because we in the least, we felt we should not have to pay the $5000 penalties. All that Robert and Gaby did was treat us rudely, renegotiate our payment plan to be more than double what we were already paying. We now pay over $400 a month instead of the $200 we were paying. We never asked them to renegotiate our payment plan and they were quite aware that we already had one. (They ask for every minute detail of your life.) When we asked about the payment plan the didn't even answer our questions. At the end, they simply sent a legal letter to the IRS on our behalf saying that we relied on TurboTax to be our "tax preparation professional" and therefore we can't be held accountable for the mistakes, and should not be charged penalties. The very same day they sent us a letter saying basically, "We're done with you. Good luck!" - We've never heard from the IRS in response to the argument that it was not our fault, except repeated monthly "We need more time to look into this, we'll respond within 45 days." notices which eventually stopped, and Robert Hoffman at Direct Tax Relief has refused to answer questions or address the issue further. When we sent an email over a year later saying "Hey, we've never gotten any response from the IRS on this, what should we do." He literally said "There's nothing you can do." and nothing else. read more
