I wasn't sure where I was actually supposed…read moreto go at first--Google Maps sent me to the driveway to the homes just south of the lighthouse--but finally found my way. There's a lighthouse next to this area that's shared with the beach just to the east, so I think it could be tricky to find a space if the lighthouse is your primary stop, given the hours that the light house is open. I haven't had a chance to explore the lighthouse itself, but I have wandered the grounds, which are maintained by the Garden Club of Evanston. There's a lovely little trail here and a trail that heads down to the beach. I'm looking forward to visiting the lighthouse and checking it out sometime soon.

Go to Daley Center for that. It is somewhere in the basement. You need to do that 24 hours before the big day and it is valid for 60 days. Then you go to 118 N. Clark St. The place you looking for is in the basement also. It is kind of hard to find it, cause it is in a padway. Wonder why....... No appoitments accepted. You need to get in a line. There is few rooms where the ceremony will be perform. The ceremony takes usually few more minutes and it is host by city judge. Some of them are really really nice and cool :_) Some of them just doing there job I guess :_(

I don't know why I'm always disappointed by government employees and services. I should know better…read morethan to expect anything besides a terrible experience. It's just frustrating that almost anytime you deal with a governmental employee, they seem gruff at best. And even those working in one of the more joyous units of county government! I called with some questions when the woman called me back, she was muttering under her breath--I don't think she expected me to pick up because I had call screening on. But she apologized for like 30 seconds at the beginning of the call saying it was a bad day, she was annoyed, but not at me--a very professional start. She did provide good directions--119 W Randolph, take the escalator downstairs. And yes, you'll enter on the Randolph side; don't use the Clark or LaSalle entrance or you'll probably get a bit turned around. But what was especially annoying is that they close for like 2.5 hours during the day. That isn't really made clear anywhere except for the sign right outside the office door, and in the two phone calls I had with them before stopping in they didn't mention being closed from 11:30 to 2. So plan accordingly. There's a $10 fee, cash only (also incredibly weird as far as I'm concerned, from both the safety perspective and that it's the year 2026). If you forget your fee, there's an ATM upstairs. On the plus side, this location performs ceremonies all week without appointments, unlike the suburban courthouses. Saturday they do require appointments, but it's nice that do any on Saturdays.

Then, after mailing in your payment you will be repeatedly told that your payment was lost in the mail, during which time the amount owed will continue to escalate. And because someone thinks it's 1972, you can't pay electronically. During which time you will waste hours and hours talking to different unhelpful people who transfer you to lines that cut you off or to hold music from which no one ever picks up. All just trying to pay a parking ticket. Incompetence and entrapment at its worst. A lovely place otherwise but not worth the ineptitude and bureaucratic hell that comes with a visit.

The Kluczynski building is part of a larger federal complex. It shares a plaza with the downtown…read morepost office, and across the street is the Dirksen federal courthouse, with the three forming the Federal Plaza. It is architecturally significant because it is a building designed by Mies van de Rohe, along with the other buildings. One thing that is somewhat distinct, and pleases the part of me that likes things symmetrical and neat, is that the seams of the building line up with the stones used in the plaza surrounding each building. My understanding is that this was done to establish a cohesion between the three buildings, even though they're separated by Dearborn Street. I absorbed some Mies history during the 11 years I worked for the university at which he remains the most famous person associated with it (even over 50 years after his death). The Kluczynski building is classical Mies architecture. The first floor is recessed from the rest of the building, and is fully wrapped in glass. There's no offices really on this floor, as is the case in so many of his other buildings, where the first floor is almost always a common space. Black steel and glass that rises 45 stories into the air is typically Miesian. In addition to being a Mies building, the Flamingo by Alexander Calder--one of Chicago's most recognizable pieces of public art--is located in the plaza between the Kluczynski building and the post office. This building houses offices for several different federal organizations: Labor, the Passport Agency, the federal credit union, the offices for the senators for Illinois, OPM, etc. You'll absolutely need ID when entering this building so come prepared.

Thankfully, the experience was still a positive one thanks to the security guard, Tyree. He was extremely helpful and provided clear directions to get me where I needed to go. Tyree had a great personality and was very friendly--not just to me, but to everyone coming through the lobby. It's always nice to see someone take pride in their job and treat people with kindness. Even though I was in the wrong place, I left with a good impression of the building and its staff.

I needed to get copies of my daughter's birth certificate and visiting the downtown Chicago…read morelocation of the county clerk's office, although much closer, would probably have been incredibly frustrating. Skokie isn't that far away and just the availability of parking would make it an easier place to visit. This location of the county clerk, inside the Skokie Courthouse, is maybe a mile from Old Orchard Shopping Center (I guess I've never driven in this direction on that road because I had no clue it was here). There's ample parking at the courthouse. Obviously lots of court proceedings take place here but there's also offices for the Cook County Sheriff and other offices, including the clerk. It was a pretty quick visit for me--I was in and out of the building within about ten minutes. The woman who helped me seemed like a pretty unfriendly human, so that was too bad (I never understand this--it's not my fault that you work where you do or that you hate your job or whatever, so I'm not sure why people act as though they hate the fact you're making them do it). As of 2023, copies of a birth certificate are $15 for the first copy and $4 for each additional one. There's a cafeteria here though I don't know if they actually serve food here, at least anymore--maybe that changed during the pandemic. But they do have a lot of tables in the cafeteria. There's also at least one ATM in the building just past the security station. When you visit you'll have to put all your things through the security check so I'd suggest packing lightly.

Particularly Ms. Alegre who resolved a concern we had which despite several calls to Social Security national number was not resolved. She was clear and resolved the issue! An example of how government offices should work!!

Can't say there are many public offices that get four stars but this social security office had two…read moresuper kind workers that really contributed to that rating. Security guard was rude but I'm confident he handles his fair share of problems and rude people because it's all appointment only and protocols have changed. Still it's a pretty routine experience, security guard checks your name on the appointment list, tells you where to sit, they call next and you meet with the worker. Chairs are marked off due to the distancing requirements. There are green spot parking spots outside the office, no free parking here!
