We enjoyed Discover Newmarket's "Short Head" half day tour. Staying in Cambridge with no car, we easily took the Number 11 bus from Drummer St. Station out to the National Stud and July Racecourse. The bus put us out on the road leading into Newmarket, and it was a 5-minute walk to the coffee shop at the racetrack where we were met by our tour guide, Larry. There were 7 of us on the tour, and we were encouraged to ask questions as we went along. Larry was a wonderful tour guide, having spent his career in the race industry around Newmarket. Very knowledgeable about the horses and the race world as well as the history of horse racing, he also shared personal stories of his experiences in Newmarket. He had a comfortable Discover Newmarket van in which he took us around to the training grounds, the Rowley Mile racetrack, through the village of Newmarket, to a small trainer's yard (where we even petted the horses, saw one shampooed, learned about the care and feeding of racehorses, and saw the electric walker), and to the National Stud. A thorough educational experience and a delightful day trip from Cambridge. HIGHLY recommended and well worth the money! read more
