    Cooking Class at Poppies Classroom

This is part II of my review of Discovery Days. It is very bittersweet, my son is graduating from this school this May. We will miss DD very much! Our son started here when he was 20 months old at Buttercups during the thick of the pandemic. Then he was at Poppies, then Tiger Lilies and now he's in the Sequoias TK classroom. He really seems thrive with the schools model/structure and he/we feel really at home, safe and have a sense of belonging in this community. As new parents , we were and still nervous through many of our son's milestones and the teachers Ms. Celina, Ms Gretchen, Ms Leslie, Multitude of teachers and including the admin leadership Araceli, Becky, Lisa were so calm and supportive providing us with resources to guide our lil guy if needed. I really think they know children ! Experts. Our son has shown so much growth in areas of communication, play with other kids, ability to self regulate , be flexible, transition and soaring academic skills . We feel like DD prepared my son well for Kindergarten. He got into our first choice private school and we are not really sure if we would have made it without the help we got from DD. Aimee French , the Social Emotional Educator, who teaches at DD was effective and contributory to building the foundations for my our son's overall growth- emotional intelligence to set the stage for learning and social skills. I also want to mention really awesome extracurricular activities my son loves! Our son comes home singing songs from Mr Max , dancing hip Hop from Jojos class, cool science experiments from Egg Head, and now doing Karate! What an amazing school and support system we have had from DD! We don't know what we're going to do past May!! Words can't express how grateful we are for this community. EVERYONE knows my sons name and he seems to know there's! I feel like this was the perfect place for my son to grow into the amazing kid he is, his innocent happy spirit was cultivated and celebrated. I feel like the school does an amazing job allowing kids to enjoy being a kid! Like i said before, if I could keep my kid here for another until he was 18, I'd do it. They really to lift off parents shoulders, don't demand a lot of volunteerism from parents . But if you like to participate, they welcome it. This school reallly does care and cherish every single kid. So if you're deciding, I would get on the waitlist ASAP!

Our child has been with Discovery Days since he was around 20 months old and he's now going into kindergarten and I'm so sad to be leaving! Watching him grow into a kind, loving, active and smart kid has been thanks to the support of the teachers and staff at DDP. As a mother in the workforce, taking my baby to daycare was a decision I struggled with for a long time, but knowing that he was so cared for made the process so much easier. There were never any tears at dropoff, but sometimes at pickup because he didn't want to go home! That was a sign for me personally that this was a good fit. Transitioning from the toddler program to the mixed aged preschool class and finally TK, we saw our child develop physical, emotional and social skills. Watching him learn how to zoom around on a scooter, climb the play structures, and build forts was just as thrilling as watching friendships and a deep love for his teachers form. DDP nurtures students interests and provides so many opportunities for them to try new things and get their hands dirty (sometimes quite literally). I think we most enjoyed the Space and Soccer enrichment classes, and the STEM lab for the TK class has been especially exciting! I am also deeply grateful for their support throughout the pandemic. Their attention to safety and the wellbeing of all was so appreciated, and I know how difficult that was on everyone. I hope that we can continue to be a part of the DDP community even after we're gone. Thank you for caring for my baby!

Our kiddos are now 2 and 4 years old (both have been there since 4/5 months old) and we continue to love Discovery Days. Both our boys have grown in so many different ways. We appreciate the teachers and staff and sense of community.

They genuinely love the children and treat them like their own nieces and nephews but with the knowledge and care of professionals. Long version: I never saw myself putting my kids in daycare as I was lucky to be cared for by my grandma. However, shortly after getting pregnant I lost my mom and my dad was having a hard time traveling from San Diego solo to help. If you have ever looked for daycare for an infant, you know a good place has over a year waitlist! That was the case when we first visited beyond too but I knew this was the ONLY daycare for my daughter. It was the only daycare I toured that I instantly felt comfortable and trusted the director and it was sooo clean and kids were so happy. I could never envision my daughter at any of the other places or picture myself trusting them with her happiness and safety. But when I met Jasmine and toured beyond I just knew. The next few months, Jasmine was a savior with getting us some part time coverage. She really cares about the families and I could tell my daughter was so happy with all her teachers. I've honestly only heard a kid cry at drop off like once in the last year and a half. My daughter had zero problems transitioning to daycare and as she moved up through the different classes we've been so happy with all her loving teachers. My daughter is so fulfilled by her time there every day and you can't replace such a great social aspect for the kids too. I've come to realize it would have been a disservice to keep my daughter isolated at home. She thrives here. She comes home everyday learning so many things it's crazy. So many words, songs, letters, numbers, lessons I never taught her she just absorbs from being at school. I'm also amazed what a great effort they've put into the activities for the older kids. I'm so appreciative bc as a full time working mom with a newborn I have no time or energy for that. I also feel their gentle and conscientious style for dealing with issues or behaviors with the kids aligned with my parenting choices. Even again with our newborn, my dad found himself unable to keep his full commitment and Jasmine immediately had us covered. They will take care of you and your baby. Can't wait for our second to start her beyond journey too :))

Our daughter was a founding student at Modern Schoolhouse in Eagle Rock. She attended TMS from when…read moreshe was 18 months until she graduated as a 4-year-old (when our family moved from LA to Denver). It's difficult to capture the gratitude and appreciation we have for Sue and her team in words. Modern Schoolhouse was an integral, joyful part of our family's life for several years. The teachers expertly crafted a safe, nurturing, and rigorous environment that provided a strong foundation for our daughter to blossom and grow. I feel like we will always look back on our enrollment at Modern Schoolhouse as one of the best parenting decisions we've ever made. A few things stand out about TMS: CURRICULUM - Our daughter was enrolled in full-time childcare for a year prior to Modern Schoolhouse. However, it was unclear whether her previous caregivers were working toward any kind of goal (e.g., Kindergarten readiness) or if she was learning anything. That changed the instant we enrolled at TMS. I remember feeling skeptical when Sue asked us to purchase a special pack of flashcards. However, a few months later our 1.5 year-old daughter was recognizing the alphabet and making letter sounds at home. We were legitimately shocked! Preschool years are so important for kids to develop foundational skills and get broad exposure to different topics. Modern Schoolhouse delivers a learning experience that feels ambitious, but not forced. Our daughter was always engaged with the current unit (e.g., marine life, camping, etc.) and excited to go to school. That is the best feeling as a parent! The regular assessments and parent/teacher conferences helped us understand her progress and make a smooth transition to our new school in Colorado. CARE - At the same time that preschool aged children are exploring new academic concepts, they're also learning how to interact and play with other children. Modern Schoolhouse does such an excellent job helping their students communicate, manage their emotions, and engage with their classmates. At TMS our daughter learned things like how to ask for space and differentiate between good vs. bad choices. Teacher/staff transitions are inevitable and unavoidable in early childhood learning. What stood out to us about TMS was the quality and consistency of the team over the years and across classrooms. The teachers at Modern Schoolhouse helped us through the various ups and downs of life with a toddler and major transitions like potty training. Now that we're no longer enrolled at TMS, we're realizing that we took for granted how proactive and responsive the teachers were with their communication. The "ouch reports" from the playground, the quick responses to questions, it's all so important for parents - especially if this is your first childcare experience. COMMUNITY - Lastly, I want to highlight the broader Modern Schoolhouse community. Our daughter became very close with several other girls in her classroom and over time we became friends with their parents as well. TMS families are diverse, kind, and welcoming. I appreciated the music day potluck, annual art show, graduation, and the various other ways that Modern Schoolhouse brought everyone together to celebrate the students. Thank you Modern Schoolhouse! We will forever be grateful to you for the positive impact you had on our family.

Until the age of two, we were able to nurture his love of creativity through art, get him engaged in reading and music, and keep him active and independent while learning at home, but his social-emotional growth needed a community like Modern Schoolhouse to truly develop. We met another family at his favorite playground that had an AMAZING experience at Modern Schoolhouse and their daughter, who was academically gifted and raised with similar philosophies, was thriving under their care. We enrolled and discovered for ourselves that Modern Schoolhouse was indeed an absolute gem for child development. Our son entered after turning two, and he was very shy/reserved at the time. The talking, dancing, singing, bilingual artist that blew us away with his funny ideas and love of learning at home, needed help expressing himself in the larger group. Over the next several years, Leonardo was able to grow and thrive his ability to emotionally self-regulate, from having a 'safe space' at home to being able to identify what he was feeling and how to 'calm his body,' to listening to others and respecting common space. What we didn't anticipate was not just the top quality of the school, the clean aesthetic spaces, and the exceptional teachers (Teacher Alicia from class 3 was truly amazing!!), but also the like minded and kind community that became a key part of our son's social life. During our son's first years at home, we studied Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia- instituting some principles of each in our approach at home. It wasn't until we met Sue and her philosophies at Modern Schoolhouse did we see some of these same philosophies embodied in an American child care setting; and we must have interviewed or toured at 5 or more local schools before finding Modern Schoolhouse. The core beliefs consist of the idea that children are competent, capable, curious individuals with hundreds of ways of self expression. The role of the school and family should be creating a structured, clean, and aesthetic environment that is conducive stimulating exploration and discovery. Teachers in this sense guide and foster collaboration rather than just 'delivering information.' Giving our son a new challenge was hard at first, but Sue and her staff were quick to offer suggestions and outside resources so we could reinforce some lessons at home, especially around his development of social/emotional skills like managing anger, dealing with disappointment, and learning to communicate when he needed space. He also was given the chance to learn how to build relationships and have positive interactions with new friends. Each 'season' and month had different themes that would be clearly delivered in monthly/quarterly emails along with chances to meet with teachers on child progress in key development areas of language, tracing, use of scissors, how to put on shoes/jackets, counting, class participation/listening, and emotional self expression. By class 3 (3 years old and above), our son was giving 'show and tell' presentations, using the 'sharing bee' to discuss their weekend, and playing inventive games to stimulate imagination and curiosity. Through the use of brightwheel, we were always shown photos and videos of our son having fun with friends and doing some fun activity. The school also offered many events at the school such as the "annual art show," "parent and me" day, and music sessions from Teacher Gaia culminating in a student led music performance (the cutest!). This year all the 4 classes made their own animal costumes and acted out various Disney themes. It was extraordinary to see him flourish and thrive under Teacher Alicia in class 3, who is truly remarkable for her ability to connect to kids and meet them where they are on the journey. By the end he was more confident in his presentations and even singing his favorite Disney songs Karaoke style to the class! Everything ended on a wonderful note with his graduation and small speech to parents and the graduating class. We were given an opportunity for a graduation photoshoot and his 'family book' with messages from all of the teachers as a keepsake that he created during his time there. As he graduated before many of the others in class 3, everyone created a special hand painted art for him with with the handprints of all his friends. It is bittersweet to go onto the next chapter, but he graduated school scoring high in every single metric of development, and he easily was interviewed and accepted into an international private school. Thanks you for being such a key part of his childhood journey and we hope to stay in touch with Leonardo and our growing family!

I remember considering many preschools before we settled on Sundance: play-based schools, montessori, schools with a religious-bent, schools with an academic bent, etc. Sundance checked so many boxes for us as it has a balance of academic preparation, Korean language instruction, fine-motor skill development through daily crafts, gross-motor skill development through outdoor play and regularly scheduled events, good communication (through pictures, newsletters, and daily reports, and an outstanding director who is always available via text and email)! My daughter did a half day at the Pasadena location while my husband and I went on a much-needed date. I love how their classes are 10 students max, for ages 2-11, and they have different lessons and curriculums they switch up. For example, my daughter made a little shaker instrument when she was there. I also didn't have time to pack her any snacks or food, so I ordered a Little Spoon meal from them, and she ate it all up, she loved it! If you do pack your own foods, be mindful it's a nut-free facility. While we did have to sign a waiver beforehand just in case something happens, my mind was put at ease immediately when the staff sent photos and updates, and they do so often, which I appreciate more than people know. Hubby and I just knew our daughter was in caring and capable hands, and we know that trust is hard to find. When we came to pick her up, she had a big smile on her face, and they sent her home with a Bumo Brain Box, so there were many more goodies for her to enjoy in the comfort of her home too!

The staff are so kind and respectful of all the parents and kids that come through, and they accommodate earlier drop offs if necessary. They also regularly send photos of my son's activities and are so communicative. Bumo is a godsend for hybrid working parents.

The teachers in the toddler classroom as so sweet and caring, and we love seeing his smiling face at drop off and pick up. We pay extra for the lunch program but it is so worth it. Everything is cooked fresh in house and it really makes our lives easier. We would highly recommend Little Acorn and love their approach to teaching the little ones. They really try to incorporate a lot of practical life learning. Our son absolutely loves it. They are also very good about posting updates in the Procare app. We get to see when his diapers are checked and/or changed, when and how much he's eaten his snacks and lunch. We also receive at least one photo of him during the day.

In particular, I cannot say enough good things about Ms. Amanda's Toddler classroom. Our daughter came home weekly with beautifully crafted art projects and we received regular photo updates from the Procare app, which gave us peace of mind when she was so little. She also began potty training around 25 months old when Ms. Amanda noticed that she showed interest, and I attribute her potty training success to the consistent effort and support reinforced by her and the rest of the teachers. Another positive is that our very picky eater has been a big fan of the hot lunch program, which is cooked on-site (thanks Ms. Gene!) I would remove a star as there was quite a bit of staff turnover right as our daughter switched into the Pre-Primary classroom. This was unfortunate as the ever-changing staff made the transition more challenging for our child, and she had a bit of a regression. However, once Ms. Nona was instated as the main teacher, she was patient and worked with our daughter, meeting her at her level until she got over the hump. Though we're sad to leave Little Acorn, we're grateful that this program set our daughter up with such a great foundation. We will miss all the teachers at Little Acorn!
