Our daughter was a founding student at Modern Schoolhouse in Eagle Rock. She attended TMS from when she was 18 months until she graduated as a 4-year-old (when our family moved from LA to Denver). It's difficult to capture the gratitude and appreciation we have for Sue and her team in words. Modern Schoolhouse was an integral, joyful part of our family's life for several years. The teachers expertly crafted a safe, nurturing, and rigorous environment that provided a strong foundation for our daughter to blossom and grow. I feel like we will always look back on our enrollment at Modern Schoolhouse as one of the best parenting decisions we've ever made. A few things stand out about TMS: CURRICULUM - Our daughter was enrolled in full-time childcare for a year prior to Modern Schoolhouse. However, it was unclear whether her previous caregivers were working toward any kind of goal (e.g., Kindergarten readiness) or if she was learning anything. That changed the instant we enrolled at TMS. I remember feeling skeptical when Sue asked us to purchase a special pack of flashcards. However, a few months later our 1.5 year-old daughter was recognizing the alphabet and making letter sounds at home. We were legitimately shocked! Preschool years are so important for kids to develop foundational skills and get broad exposure to different topics. Modern Schoolhouse delivers a learning experience that feels ambitious, but not forced. Our daughter was always engaged with the current unit (e.g., marine life, camping, etc.) and excited to go to school. That is the best feeling as a parent! The regular assessments and parent/teacher conferences helped us understand her progress and make a smooth transition to our new school in Colorado. CARE - At the same time that preschool aged children are exploring new academic concepts, they're also learning how to interact and play with other children. Modern Schoolhouse does such an excellent job helping their students communicate, manage their emotions, and engage with their classmates. At TMS our daughter learned things like how to ask for space and differentiate between good vs. bad choices. Teacher/staff transitions are inevitable and unavoidable in early childhood learning. What stood out to us about TMS was the quality and consistency of the team over the years and across classrooms. The teachers at Modern Schoolhouse helped us through the various ups and downs of life with a toddler and major transitions like potty training. Now that we're no longer enrolled at TMS, we're realizing that we took for granted how proactive and responsive the teachers were with their communication. The "ouch reports" from the playground, the quick responses to questions, it's all so important for parents - especially if this is your first childcare experience. COMMUNITY - Lastly, I want to highlight the broader Modern Schoolhouse community. Our daughter became very close with several other girls in her classroom and over time we became friends with their parents as well. TMS families are diverse, kind, and welcoming. We experienced ongoing communication issues while trying to enroll our daughter at The Modern Schoolhouse. Unfortunately, the lack of clear, timely communication throughout the admissions process ultimately led us to change directions for our daughter. Over the course of more than a month, we received conflicting information from multiple staff members about when our daughter would be able to start. We were consistently told she would begin in September 2026, only to later be told that August 3 was the only option. While that may seem like a small difference, many families plan childcare, work schedules, and finances months in advance, so changing the start date created unnecessary stress. Unfortunately, communication was the biggest issue. Multiple calls and emails took weeks to receive a response, and some were never returned. When we finally received a definitive answer, we were told it was essentially August 3 or nothing. To make matters worse, we were never clearly informed that there was a deadline after which our deposit would become non-refundable. Had that been communicated clearly, we could have made a more informed decision quicker. As a result, it felt like the school unfairly kept our $1,000 deposit because that deadline was never clearly communicated to us. Overall, our experience with the admissions and administrative process left us feeling that communication was disorganized and lacked transparency. For a school that parents are trusting with their children, clear, timely, and transparent communication is incredibly important. We learned early on how incredibly important and foundational the learning ages of 2-5 were going to be for our son's growth. Until the age of two, we were able to nurture his love of creativity through art, get him engaged in reading and music, and keep him active and independent while learning at home, but his social-emotional growth needed a community like Modern Schoolhouse to truly develop. We met another family at his favorite playground that had an AMAZING experience at Modern Schoolhouse and their daughter, who was academically gifted and raised with similar philosophies, was thriving under their care. We enrolled and discovered for ourselves that Modern Schoolhouse was indeed an absolute gem for child development. Our son entered after turning two, and he was very shy/reserved at the time. The talking, dancing, singing, bilingual artist that blew us away with his funny ideas and love of learning at home, needed help expressing himself in the larger group. Over the next several years, Leonardo was able to grow and thrive his ability to emotionally self-regulate, from having a 'safe space' at home to being able to identify what he was feeling and how to 'calm his body,' to listening to others and respecting common space. What we didn't anticipate was not just the top quality of the school, the clean aesthetic spaces, and the exceptional teachers (Teacher Alicia from class 3 was truly amazing!!), but also the like minded and kind community that became a key part of our son's social life. During our son's first years at home, we studied Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia- instituting some principles of each in our approach at home. It wasn't until we met Sue and her philosophies at Modern Schoolhouse did we see some of these same philosophies embodied in an American child care setting; and we must have interviewed or toured at 5 or more local schools before finding Modern Schoolhouse. The core beliefs consist of the idea that children are competent, capable, curious individuals with hundreds of ways of self expression. The role of the school and family should be creating a structured, clean, and aesthetic environment that is conducive stimulating exploration and discovery. Teachers in this sense guide and foster collaboration rather than just 'delivering information.' Giving our son a new challenge was hard at first, but Sue and her staff were quick to offer suggestions and outside resources so we could reinforce some lessons at home, especially around his development of social/emotional skills like managing anger, dealing with disappointment, and learning to communicate when he needed space. He also was given the chance to learn how to build relationships and have positive interactions with new friends. Each 'season' and month had different themes that would be clearly delivered in monthly/quarterly emails along with chances to meet with teachers on child progress in key development areas of language, tracing, use of scissors, how to put on shoes/jackets, counting, class participation/listening, and emotional self expression. By class 3 (3 years old and above), our son was giving 'show and tell' presentations, using the 'sharing bee' to discuss their weekend, and playing inventive games to stimulate imagination and curiosity. Through the use of brightwheel, we were always shown photos and videos of our son having fun with friends and doing some fun activity. The school also offered many events at the school such as the "annual art show," "parent and me" day, and music sessions from Teacher Gaia culminating in a student led music performance (the cutest!). This year all the 4 classes made their own animal costumes and acted out various Disney themes. It was extraordinary to see him flourish and thrive under Teacher Alicia in class 3, who is truly remarkable for her ability to connect to kids and meet them where they are on the journey. By the end he was more confident in his presentations and even singing his favorite Disney songs Karaoke style to the class! Everything ended on a wonderful note with his graduation and small speech to parents and the graduating class. We were given an opportunity for a graduation photoshoot and his 'family book' with messages from all of the teachers as a keepsake that he created during his time there. As he graduated before many of the others in class 3, everyone created a special hand painted art for him with with the handprints of all his friends. It is bittersweet to go onto the next chapter, but he graduated school scoring high in every single metric of development, and he easily was interviewed and accepted into an international private school. Our son who is now almost 3 started at TMS when he was 18 months old and transitioned from a traditional childcare center. He was a very late walker and just started his first steps 2 weeks before he was scheduled to start! We were nervous given how many activities are available to the kids but the teachers were so very patient and nurturing but also gave him his independence to take off. The teachers are great about providing daily updates and sharing the focus items for the week so that parents can provide additional reinforcement at home. We have been able to see the progression in his independence and emotions as he starts to problem solve using words and other non-physical cues which are skills that the teachers and staff focus on as part of the curriculum. I can't not express how grateful I am for this school. My daughter started when she was 2.5 yo and is now about to be 4 next month. I have somewhat of a complex life with my daughter being that it is her and I with the help of my mom and sister. Meaning we have different family members picking her up depending on the day. That can be hard for a toddler. They have guided our family throughout the process and ensured that my daughter's feelings are addressed throughout all the changes. They have taught her amazing emotional regulation and how to verbalize her needs and wants. We have very little outburst in the home as we have been able to talk them through. If I run into any issues of how to address behavior changes with my daughter her teachers are always willing to help with tips and resources. They truly care for the kids and it shows. They have also been a parenting coach for me as well tbh. I receive updates with pictures and notes throughout the day of activities and what she is learning. They are a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. My daughter has really thrived. She does simple addition, spells her name, starting to write out letters, and is an independent and critical thinker. I don't trust a lot of people with my daughter but I whole heartedly trust her teachers. You can't put a price on peace of mind, especially when it comes to your kids. It's been about 6 months since the beginning of our preschool journey. When we started, our son didn't have much exposure to other children and wasn't very verbal. In just half a year, our son has developed so much. He has grown most in verbal expression and socialization. The school has provided the daily structure, opportunities for learning, and activities to encourage our son's growth. From STEM activities to working on public speaking through weekly "show and tell" to music class, this program approaches development so uniquely and the smaller class sizes are a definite plus. As a first time parent, it's not easy parting with your child everyday in order to go to work, but I truly feel comfortable bringing him here. As far as how things operate, the school currently uses an app to stay in touch with parents, which is great and helps us feel connected to the school experience. I'm a pretty detailed, particular person and really like to do my research, especially when it comes to something as important as a preschool for my daughter. Education is paramount to me and my husband. We visited a lot of places - I mean if it was in Pasadena or SGV area, we went there. We asked questions and observed the environment closely wherever we went. We weighed the pros and cons. After asking Sue loads of questions (and appreciating her patience!), we ultimately decided on the Modern Schoolhouse due to the small class size (hoping my daughter would get that attention and care and not be forgotten/get lost in the mix) and the hybrid teaching style (we didn't want only Montessori, I have things that I respect and like about other teaching styles too). My daughter took to the school right away. She napped fine there. She started potty training while there, and they are helpful about reinforcing what goes on at home too when you are beginning that process! I appreciated how flexible and accommodating the teachers were. I ask her questions about her day every day after she gets home and she gleefully lists off the names of her friends and what they did that day. She tells me funny stories and happily and excitedly brings me all the projects and creations they worked on. I love seeing her improve in her numbers and words, and especially her joy in interacting with other kids. She speaks very well, uses words we had no idea she knew, loves her songs and we are grateful for how much she's grown at TMS. The only thing that we were awaiting for a while was a lunch program, which they have had available for some months now, so we are super thankful for that! It's good to know that your child is being given healthy and hopefully yummy food too during the day, cuz my daughter LOVES eating. She still snacks up a storm after she gets home.. Our daughter attends the Eagle Rock location and I have to say they are absolutely amazing! She was previously at a Montessori in Pasadena and was crying every day at drop off. We tried to get to the bottom of it and it seemed it just did not suit her needs. TMS has a much broader outlook on the entire developmental needs of the individual child. With our toddler about to turn 2 and returning to the workforce, my husband and I were looking for childcare options. We researched various daycare locations and are so grateful to have found TMS. With COVID, our tot didn't have much social interaction with kids and we were a bit concerned. We were also worried about COVID and wanted to find an environment that would be enriching but also safe. The precautions that Sue, the director, took made us feel comfortable. We liked that the max class size was 12 and that there were 3 teachers/caretakers. Her approach to TMS was an ideal situation for our toddler. She would have social interaction with other kids, the ability to learn and let her creativity loose and a curriculum that piqued her curiosity. After a week or so, our toddler adjusted and looked forward to learning and seeing her friends. Every day it seemed she learned something new. Since our household speaks multiple languages, English was the least spoken language. She's learned so much in the span of 3 months, it's truly incredible to watch. She was not the best napper pre TMS and still doesn't take long naps at home but she takes 2+ hour naps here due to the stimulation! We are so grateful to have taken the 12th and final spot when we did, and so appreciative of Sue, her staff and all the other kiddos and families that are a part of the TMS family! read more

Finding a daycare is always daunting and doing it during Covid is even more stressful. We were drawn to The Modern Schoolhouse because of the clean setup and the great teacher to kid ratio. We didn't feel comfortable in a larger more "corporate" setting and we are happy about our choice every day. It feels like our 2.5 year old is taking leaps since starting here and she's learning while having fun, not just memorizing things. They include fun activities like Yoga, sign language and other things and I don't feel bad when I can't take my daughter everywhere on the weekend, because she gets so much stimulation during the week. Our daughter started at 18 months and in the 4 months she's been there we've been delighted by how much she has blossomed in their care. This is her first experience with school/daycare and we couldn't have dreamed up a better place! This is also where they play toy instruments (under the guidance of a professional musician) and dance on "music day" which has created many priceless memories for our family! Our child has been to several daycares and we have never been as happy as we are now at TMS. There are two main things parents look for in a daycare: 1) a safe, nurturing environment & teachers 2) a high-quality curriculum. In regards to the curriculum, not all daycares match the level of curriculum they advertise with what the children actually do on a daily basis. TMS meets the high-standard education that they promise. Our child comes home daily showing us new things they learned that day. We get several pictures in the app each day showing the various activities the children do along with tons of projects sent home that the kids worked on. A strong curriculum though isn't enough without inspiring teachers who connect with the children. And that leads to the environment and teachers. The teachers at TMS are amazing and they are what sets TMS apart. The staff turnover is extremely low. Which means a) the teachers love their jobs and love the kids and b) the children bond with their teachers. Each day at drop off, there are two big smiles: the teacher who is genuinely happy to see the child and the child genuinely happy to see their teacher. And each day at pick up, I walk in to laughter and not just the children, the teachers are also having fun. As a parent, I don't think you can ask for any more than that! read more

My husband and I spent months researching schools for our daughter. We visited 10 or 12 in total, and couldn't be happier that we chose Modern Schoolhouse. Our little one is now in her 9th month here and it's amazing to see how much she has grown and learned under the tutelage of the teachers. Each one truly cares about the progress and well-being of the students, and it's obvious how much love they pour into teaching and caring for the kids. Imagine walking into a school full of toddlers on a Friday afternoon after a long week and finding the kids happily playing quietly. From our experience, that's unheard of. The curriculum that Sue has put together focuses on a different subject each day, including immersive language, yoga, art, focused independent play, and more. The modern schoolhouse is really the best option that we found when looking for a childcare facility for our 18mo old. I love how they took a village approach with the opening of the Eagle Rock location. They had all the new prospective families do a "summer camp" (half days) for one month and then transitioned them all together to full time childcare the next month. They keep the ratio small and give my child so much attention. I love picking him up and hearing about the new things he learned. They are also very intentional about the things they teach which I find unique and really fosters child development and independence. We love this school! As a family with two kids, we've now experienced a total of 3 schools for young children and have had an exceptional experience at The Modern Schoolhouse. The staff is communicative, nurturing and warm, and the facility is clean and inviting. Our child attended TMS from age 1.5-2.5 and in that year has grown tremendously, both in fostering friendships with classmates and attachments with staff to establishing a strong foundation in learning. TMS offers a strong curriculum even for little ones, learning their letters and lettersounds, numbers, exploring cultures around the world, etc. They do lots of arts and crafts and have plenty of outdoor playtime each day, which is of great importance to us. They also offer flexible hours which is very helpful for working families. Cost competitive with most childcare facilities but the small class sizes ensure each child gets plenty of focused attention. read more

While that first month of separation was difficult (for both of us... someone didn't like bottles) we knew he was in a safe, clean, and loving environment. I was very daunted by the idea of selecting daycare for my precious son, especially in a pandemic. I looked at dozens of options and took a few tours but I immediately knew I found the place when I walked through the doors. Now, 6 months later, my son is thriving; he's learning words, sign language, social skills, and always leaves in a great mood. As first time parents, who also both work full time, finding child care for our son was a stressful decision. We had visited multiple daycares, until we finally settled on The Modern Schoolhouse. Let me tell you, we are so thankful we did! From the first consultation Sue was attentive, passionate and knowledgeable. Our son started attending around 5.5 months and we have loved it from day one. From the staff to the students, it is the environment we had always hoped for. The small teacher/student ratio allows plenty of individual attention and we can already see growth in his development. From sitting, to crawling to solidifying a sleep schedule, we are forever grateful! Most importantly, we can see how happy our child is at drop offs/pick ups everyday. I cannot say how many times my husband I have said how grateful we are to have found The Modern Schoolhouse. Teacher Sue is an absolute pro, the small scale gives me continuous comfort, and every kid there is sweet- greeting us with smiles each day. Our 14 month old daughter started at TMS six weeks ago now, and is at this point confidently trotting off to join her friends each morning. After a year of essentially being joined at the locked-down hips, I was nervous about my daughter's ability to adjust. Sue helped us find a transitioning path that worked for us, and we have had a smooth path to full days that now end with her often not wanting to leave! Activities are rotated and engaging, and the staff really seem to know and care for each kid. Covid/ health precautions are considered and age-appropriate. I love the small scale, with only 12 little ones total, and feel a sense of safety as well as encouragement that my daughter is getting the stimulation and social skills that she seeks and needs to thrive. Our daughter was at the Modern Schoolhouse in San Gabriel for about 7 months. We were new to Southern California and were taken in by the clean surroundings, the somewhat inaccessible nature of the school (after asking for info, it took me weeks to hear back and get a tour and then an offer to enroll) and of course the need for a quick decision; we were urged to place a deposit when a spot came up as it would soon be gone. But after some time there, we found it was not a match. We really liked Ms. Vanessa but that was not enough to stay. During our time there, the school began attracting a lot of younger kids (2 and under) and the number of 3s was dwindling. We could see the change in our little one immediately, as she became quiet and somewhat withdrawn. One day I walked in for drop-off and found myself in a room with so many crying babies and toddlers. The change was palpable. We shifted to a new school within 1-2 weeks. I am happy to report our younger one was writing her name within one week at the new school. She's only been there a few months but she has really blossomed under the tutelage of her new teacher who has been teaching in the same classroom for 27 years. I am floored that we found such a gem of a school tucked away in Pasadena. The price was also super reasonable (about $1,500/month) compared to TMS (which charges over 2K/month). Overall my husband and I have come to think of TMS as a daycare, with lots of activities, but lacking the organizational and developmental structure to meet children where they are. This review is not meant to be an attack but constructive feedback for the admin and advice for parents (who never have enough time) looking for a place for their little ones. read more

We have moved around a bit and have experienced several different daycares and preschools. This one has by far been the most nurturing and has developed great skills in my son. Social skills, coping skills, academic skills, the list goes on. Class size is small and the teachers are all very loving and caring. I'm an educator by profession and I love how the director has created a thoughtful and meaningful curriculum that is rooted in the most contemporary research in education. The curriculum is outstanding and the outdoor space in eagle rock is lovely. I have nothing but positives to say about this gem of a school! Oh and their hours are very generous too! We're grateful to a part of The Modern Schoolhouse community. It has been a positive, wonderful and nurturing environment for our daughter who joined at 18 months old. This was our child's first time experiencing childcare outside of our home. Sue and the teachers were patient and kind and helped us make the transition to full-time care. My wife and I really love The Modern Schoolhouse! Our daughter has only been attending the toddler/preK program for a few months now, but she has already grown more comfortable using sign language to communicate and has become more confident in her speech. Her favorite day is Friday, where the kids enjoy live music outside. We can't say enough about how much we enjoy this environment for our daughter and we hope to enroll our youngest daughter here once she's of age. read more

We searched and searched for the right place for our child and immediately knew TMS was the place for us. Sue and the teachers are amazing. Comforting, welcoming, and nurturing. We have been really happy with The Modern Schoolhouse. We were very relieved to see how well our 18 month old adjusted to her first school experience, and that is largely due to the warmth and gentleness of teacher Destinee, Carmen, Sherrie, and the others. The environment is truly wonderful, calming and stimulating, and the kids are always interacting with very caring and nurturing teachers. We really like the daily updates and pictures, and the integrated meal program with very healthy options and a large variety of different foods. The school organizes a lot of activities to engage the kids every week and on multiple days/week, such as music classes, a reptile show, water play Wednesday, pijama(PJ)-days, and so on. They even make books with pictures of the kids and descriptions from the families to further help the kids know each other during reading time. The school also strives to create a strong community where the parents get to know each others and the teachers, which helps in many ways including by facilitating play dates. For example, they organized a music performance and a potluck meetup for the families, and shared email contacts. Finally, the building and backyard are truly beautiful, the kids love spending time in all areas of the school. If you are lucky to get in, you will not be disappointed! read more
