My kids invited me to join them on a trek up Half Dome after all of my 2020 vacation plans had been cancelled due to COVID. Luckily, Discovery Treks had the permit, which happened to fall on my birthday. Now I am NOT an experienced backpacker, and I turned 59 on the trip, but our guide, Jason, helped me to be successful and confident during this adventure. Our first night found him waiting at our campsite with a cozy hammock and dinner waiting. He had maps available to give us a visual of our route and he explained all we should expect on our three day hike. For three days and nights, our meals were planned, prepped and cleaned up by Jason, with strict attention to the dietary restrictions of our group. He even surprised me with a delicious treat on the morning of my birthday, complete with candles (no, not 59!) Jason's pack contained remedies for blisters, stomach issues, chafing, and dehydration so no one was uncomfortable on the journey. Jason's knowledge of the flora, fauna and terrain, along with his respect for the environment, was the icing on the cake. We saw a multitude of wildlife, swam in clear, cool streams, and enjoyed amazing star-filled skies, I was nervous about summiting Half Dome, but I have to say it was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life! We had such an incredible trip to the Grand Canyon (rim to rim). Everything went so smoothly. The customer service prior to the trip was great, thank you Adam! They sent multiple emails reminding us of important information leading up to the trip. Upon arrival, we were brought to their store and briefed on everything about the trip the following day and were able to buy last minute gear. They fitted our packs and gave us our tents/pads/sleeping bags. The transportation to the north rim (6 hours) was comfortable and we were able to take naps, stop for lunch/snacks, and for a scenic rest stop. Our tour guide, Jason, was incredible. His knowledge on the Grand Canyon (and lots of other things!) was very impressive. He was extremely patient with us when we began to struggle. He showed us so many cool spots that we would have missed had we not had a tour guide. And to top it all off, he is an AMAZING cook. We were beyond spoiled by his cooking. Every meal, including breakfast, was well thought out, nutritional, filling, and delicious. Honestly, most meals were fancier than the ones we make at home. He was very organized as well, cooking and clean up was always very quick. Thank you so much for ensuring we had such an incredible experience, Jason. Do yourself a favor and BOOK THIS TOUR!!! From the moment we met our guide to the time we got in the car to go home, this trip was INCREDIBLE. Yosemite is an amazing, beautiful place on its own, but Discovery Treks made the experience unforgettable. Jason, our guide, was professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and truly went above and beyond to give us a once in a life time trip. As a very novice backpacker, this trip admittedly pushed my limits. However, Jason was receptive and patient, and knew exactly how to make me feel comfortable and ready for every turn. Talk about a GUIDE. Besides knowing the ins and outs of our trails and trek, he was also incredibly versed in the wildlife, landscape, gear, and Yosemite history, and kept us entertained with information and anecdotes along the way. The food was delicious and impressive; warm meals and fresh vegetables! Not to mention - one of our guests had a birthday over the trip, and he surprised us with a backpack style birthday cake! YUM! He took our photos (candid shots!), pointed out all the best views, helped me with my tent/pack and answered all of my questions. I am an avid hiker, but I usually plan my own trips because I didn't think these organized trips were worth the money. Discovery Treks proved me wrong. Every aspect of my experience was top-notch and professional. The gear they provide is top of the line. The guides (Jason and Katie) were incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and a joy to be around. I was worried the guides would be like baby sitters during the trip, but they were truly just there to enhance the experience and were not too restrictive. We had 9 people on our trip, with varying skill levels, so the guides would allow us to go at our own pace but set meetup spots where we could wait for the group. Discovery Treks handles everything from transportation, to permits, to cooking, and assisting in setup/breakdown of tents. These trips take a ton of time to plan, and can be stressful when you have no cell service and are unsure of when the next water source may be. Discovery Treks does all of the dirty work, and saved me hours and hours of research. Could not speak more highly of this company, and hope to enjoy another trip with them in the near future. read more

I had to wait a couple weeks before I could write my review - I was just too pumped up from a trip of a lifetime! I am a solo traveler and Yosemite/ Half Dome was calling my name but I was leery of doing such a hike solo - AND the added difficulties of even getting permits and access! I was so fortunate to have had Collin Page from Discovery Treks as our fearless leader for our small group adventure. He was knowledgeable and skilled beyond my expectations and just as important were his people skills. He was so respectful of where each of us was coming from mentally and physically approaching this challenge and with a wide age group range on this trip. Collin found a way to connect with each individual and as a group. By the end of our 5 day adventure he had challenged each of us appropriately in a supportive and non threatening way to stretch out of our comfort zones. He is the real deal! And the company itself is great with emails/ phone calls/ prep lists and expectations/ and other communication. I wish they had more options but I would also sign up for a Grand Canyon tour in a heartbeat with them! Well done. read more

I did the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim backpacking tour over four days during the 4th of July week with Discovery Treks. Yes -- in July! And it was the best experience ever. Our guide, Keenan, was incredible. He cooked real, delicious food every day and constantly impressed us with his culinary skills -- fresh avocado, tomatoes, onions, pasta, rice, cheese, and more. He made sure we were well-fed, safe, and truly enjoying the hike. Keenan also took the time to share his knowledge with us and even helped us complete the "Canyon Explorer Junior Ranger adventure guide" so we could earn the Grand Canyon Explorer patch. Yes, it was hot -- but manageable. We woke up early (4 a.m.) each day to reach the campground before 10 a.m., giving us the rest of the day to relax and enjoy. The campgrounds where we stayed were great. The group was amazing, which made the trip even more memorable. So many stories, so many laughs, so much fun... If you think the view from the Bright Angel Trailhead is beautiful, wait until you see it from the bottom -- it's absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend Discovery Treks and Keenan! read more

I did a Grand Canyon hike to Cremation Canyon last week, with absolutely no business doing this as my first ever hike. I went in blind and only partly prepared for what I was getting into. However, Jason, the guide, was the consummate professional - always finding the right words to motivate me to keep going when I swore I was going to just live there the rest of my life, seamlessly grabbing weight from my backpack at just the right moments, offering to drop his pack off and come back to get ours for those of us who were struggling to make those last steps... He never made me feel rushed on the way out when I was dragging everyone down, always reassuring me that he would be the last one out of the Canyon, and never made me feel like a moron as I continued to talk to myself to push through. From the time I put my deposit down until the time Jason dropped our group off at the hotel, Discovery Treks was on point. I recommend them in general and Jason in particular if you decide to challenge yourself with a Grand Canyon trek. read more

I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I mean this very literally. However, during orientation, expectations were made very clear. The guides were very accommodating. They hiked at my pace, the meals were gourmet, and hot coffee was ready every morning. Filtered water from the creeks was in constant resupply. Keenan and Danny (Guides) truly went above and beyond to make it a wonderful hiking experience. Combined, they have a wealth of historical and geological knowledge of the grand canyon. Not to mention their relentless sense of humor that will split your sides. I will warn you, if you hike Hermits trail, you will encounter a small hut. Do not get your hopes, it is not a Pizza Hut. Also, in the realm of possibilities, you could find anything at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, except cheeseburgers. A lesson learned the hard way. My friend and I just got back from a Discovery Treks adventure to the South Rim and 8 miles down to the Supai Reservation and Havasu Falls. SO AMAZING! Michelle and Tom in the office were so kind and always returned my calls and emails as I unravelled the process of knocking a big "To Do" off my bucket list. Dillon was our guide and he was not only experienced in terms of hiking and the environment, but was literally able to answer every question about bugs, flowers, trees, heights, population, the people, and the history, etc. He fed us and kept us safe while allowing us to push our own personal physical boundaries. My husband booked the North Rim getaway for an anniversary gift, and I couldn't have been more excited. I had never visited the Grand Canyon before and was blown away by my four day visit. Our trail was secluded and full of nature (SNAKES!!!), the views were amazing but what really led me to writing this review is my experience with customer service.
