Dishoom was one of my favorite meals in Edinburgh. We started with the bun maska and masala chai combo, along with the chili chicken. The bun maska was perfectly drenched in butter, and the chai was hot and comforting. The chili chicken was also really flavorful with the perfect spice level. For our mains, we got the Ruby Chicken and House Black Dal with garlic naan, chili paratha, and a side of plain rice. The Ruby Chicken had a delicious tomato gravy, and the chicken pieces were really soft. The dal was thick and creamy. Everything paired together so well. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself was beautiful, with a Bombay-inspired atmosphere. There's seating both upstairs and downstairs, and while we didn't have any issues, I've heard there can be long wait times. Our server was friendly, although the service felt a little sloppy at times. They also surprised us with complimentary champagne since we were celebrating a special occasion, which was really nice. I found the portions to be a little smaller, and it's definitely on the pricier side, but I think it's worth the splurge. This restaurant runs like a well oiled machine on behalf of customers! The staff is professional but friendly & easy at the same time. The food is fantastic! And the service is attentive. It's a beautiful thing to witness, even better to experience. My Negroni order was sent to the bar while my server and I chatted about what I might like. So efficient. I ended up ordering a couple of small plates. A spicy lamb dish and a hot/cold combo of yogurt and mashed hot veggies. Rather quickly my drink was served and a short while later my food appeared. From the check in to the bar service to being called to your table upstairs everything works well and makes sense. Our water was wonderful and super cheerful. He made great dish recommendations. After an incredible dinner at Dishoom's London location with my very discerning Indian family, my expectations for the Edinburgh branch were sky-high. Thankfully, it absolutely lived up to the reputation. My spouse and I came with a large group - we filled two separate reservations - for brunch, and the restaurant handled it seamlessly. My husband and I shared the Big Bombay Breakfast, which was more than enough for two. Everything was excellent, but the clear standout was the masala baked beans. I could happily eat an entire bowl of them on their own. I also ordered the bottomless chocolate chai, and I fully embraced the "bottomless" aspect. By the end of the meal, I was extremely well caffeinated and nearly ready to jog up Arthur's Seat. Service was warm and attentive, and the space has that signature Dishoom charm - inviting, atmospheric, and perfect for a leisurely morning meal. I just wished we didn't spend one of our precious meals in Europe here. We started with their chai. It's famous, but quite small and also not my cup of tea. Their chicken ruby was good, tastes like butter chicken with a bit more tomato? There's Edinburgh special was my favorite item here. The lamb was tender and perfectly spicy. The potato on top didn't do anything for the dish though. Overall, it was fine. If you traveled to Edinburgh, don't spend a meal here. You can get food on par to this almost anywhere. There was a long wait when we arrived, but they were offering chai samples to people in line, and within minutes we were inside at the waiting area where we had a drink and met some friendly people. We literally came here twice on our one week vacation. It was the best meal of the trip. Amazing, I have no words. Worth the wait, lives up to the hype, just go, you won't regret it. There was a 90 minute wait on a weeknight in June and one person had to stay in waiting the whole time. They were very precise about the wait time and even gave a modification of 10 minutes to an earlier stated wait time, which was amusing. They did offer chai and mint tea while we were waiting -- much appreciated! The restaurant inside is extremely extremely dim -- probably my only gripe with the restaurant! We were shining our phone flashlights to read the menu -- that's the level of dim I am talking about. Fresh nimbu soda was very simple but refreshing. Vada pav was delicious, though a tad spicy for my taste. Tandoori Chaat as well. The Murgh Malai Tikka was melting in the mouth and the Bombay potatoes that came with it were delicious too. Chicken biryani and chicken kathi rolls were ok (though the chicken in both was again beautifully cooked). The corn on the cob was also grilled to perfection. Be aware that portion sizes were small. Ended with Malai kulfi and a Kala Khatta dessert with mascarpone cream which was the most imaginative dessert I have had at an Indian restaurant. Totally worth the wait. read more

I was so ecstatic to see there is a Dishoom location in Edinburgh. It's been on my list for when I visit London. We were in Edinburgh for two days and we went both days. We were able to walk in for two around 3pm the first day and the second day, we waited an hour and forty minutes around 7pm. They provided us chai/limbu pani while we waited. The team is a well oiled machine, I mean they got it down to a perfect system. I love all the black/white ads and newspaper clippings and pictures on the walls. Take a few minutes to read them and you'll learn so much. The owner is from Sylhet, Bangladesh; he has a well decorated resume. The food is Bombay style! Day 1: Chilli Butter Bhutta 2/5 - corn on the cob chowpatty style, corn was undercooked Salli Boti 5/5 - braised lamb, more of a hybrid cultured dish, pretty solid and served with roomali roti which is very light and authentic (it's not naan) Murgh Malai 5/5 - tender, pieces are big House Black daal 5/5 - highly recommend, cooked for hours, the lentils hold shape visually but don't have a bite to it Chicken biryani 5/5 - topped with dried cranberries...say less, plenty of chicken pieces, this biryani was perfect. Kala Khatta shorbot 5/5 - not overly sweet, definitely gives a taste of the region Chai 5/5 - no comment except I could drink 2 gallons. Cool restaurant with food unlike anything I have had before. Indian inspired flavors but with such complexity it was amazing. Went here twice on my recent trip. Don't think I've ever eaten at the same restaurant twice in the same trip, but Dishoom is something special! Without a reservation, wait time can add up during peak times. You wait a bit outside, then they send you to the basement floor where you wait longer, but you can order snacks/drinks while you do. The reviews for this Indian restaurant set a high expectation. As we were visiting on a Saturday, I made a reservation, I'm glad I did as they were booked for the night. The seating area is downstairs, low lite, romantic, and smelling of delicious spices. The service was excellent. I grew up eating Indian food, but my friend did not, and our server was apt at explaining their menu. They have several cocktails they have put their twist on. We started with papadum with three chutneys. All were excellent. My friend and I shared garlic naan, monkfish curry, grilled greens, and their gunfire potatoes. Everything was amazing, perfectly seasoned and portioned. While we were full, we still ended up sharing dessert, completely worth it. This was my favorite meal we had in Scotland. A fabulous dining experience in the heart of beautiful Edinburgh. We were a party of 7 adults there for lunch and were seated upstairs. Our waiter was amazing -- explained the menu fully (each section represents a different preparation method, e.g., grilled meats and such, sauced meats, biryanis (including a jackfruit biryani that I thought was chicken the entire meal), and accompaniments like naan) and even made sure we didn't over order. My favorites were the lamb special that came with roti and sauced tomato chicken dish (almost like buttered chicken or murgh tikka masala). My least favorite was the grilled chicken dish -- I was expecting chicken breast grilled like tandoori tikka or a grilled chicken breast dish I get at a local US indian shop that is marinated in a green yogurt sauce -- instead, the dish was dark meat chicken that I could not tell what part of the chicken it was, but came with a very flabby and fatty piece of meat/fat on the bottom. 3 weeks in UK and hands down best meal!! There were 4 of us and we got several things and shared around. Best Indian food ive ever had. The salad was so unusual... never had anything like it spicy but had mint and some crispy... would love to have it at home. They were very busy and we didnt have reservations so we were very lucky they let us in. Highly recommend. But I made it clear I'm a wimp as far as spices because it can be spicy. We got some spicy ears of corn but the spice level kept amping up. Shame because it was so good. There was a green dip or chutney that helped tone down the spice level. I'm going to be up front and say it, I might only be 50% Indian, but I am 100% certain Dishoom is the best Indian restaurant in the world. This is my first time in Scotland and thus far the food does wonders for the palate. I didn't get any photos since we absolutely inhaled the food, but we ordered the papad, Pav Bhaji, chicken tikka, pepper mutton, daal makhani, and a whole mess of other dishes. The meal closed with the kneer for dessert. I had the Dishoom ipa, and would certainly recommend it. After dinner drink was the Dishoom old fashioned, because whiskey and dates is a match made in heaven. This room is a gorgeous spot to get some incredibly delicious food. The line was out of the door, so it was the first hint. 5 Star Yelp rating was another. I sensed the aromas when outside; and as I walked it, the fragrance of cumin, cardamom, coriander and fennel washed over me. The hustle and bustle of the kitchen was mesmerizing and I melted into the bar chair coming from the chilly street. Their menu was elaborate. Truly lots of choices, and I had to use ChatGPT a few times. I finally got settled on a smaller plate (warning: often smaller plates in UK is like a full meal). It was called New Keema Pau. I loved what was inside, but did not want the roll it came with. They were kind enough to substitute the roll (pau) with the naan, but they found my request a bit odd :-) The food came out quickly and oh boy, was I up for a treat. Everything tasted like fireworks in my mouth. So. Freaking. Good. The three complimentary sauces they served were amazing, too! I wish we had a place THAT good in LA. Edinburgh location looked quite big with several floors and it wasn't as busy as most Dishooms', unless we just happened to come at the right time. We got seated quickly and our server was very nice and friendly. Food also came out pretty quickly. Everything we ordered was delicious and full of flavor as expected. We ordered the veggie and lamb samosas, a chicken dish for the kids, black Dahl with 2 orders of garlic naan, blackened shrimp and their signature lamb dish special to Edinburgh. Easily the best Indian food that I've ever eaten. We're in Scotland for about two weeks and are planning to eat here several times.

We arrived without reservations and the wait was 30-45 mins. The place was packed so highly recommend making reservations. We were send to the basement room where the Bar is as well as dining and the WC. After enjoying our drinks for awhile, we were told to take the back elevators to the top floor. It's not an ideal place for handicap nor wheelchairs which didn't apply to us but the place just felt crowded and jammed. The servers have to take food from the kitchen at ground level and climb the long flight of stairs to deliver to you. We ordered the vegt samosa (3 tasty pieces with crispy exterior and dipping sauce), chicken biriyani (delicious) and lamb chops (delicious too). It was our first time at a Dishoom for dinner and I prefer the good over their breakfast menu when we tried it in London. Great place for a group of 4-6. read more

We visited the Edinburgh location multiple times when our son lived nearby as he attended the University of Edinburgh. Then again once in London when he and his family were living there. Both locations were great experiences both with service and the food. As we live in Florida we can't frequent as often as we'd like, but will definitely whenever we're in the UK. read more

I highly recommend making a reservation. They allow them up until around 5:45. This means you can get in easily for lunch and make a big meal out of it. They do have breakfast as well. Since we had a reservation and called the day before to confirm that we'd have no trouble sitting outside, I wasn't thrilled to arrive only to find out that Dishoom was short on servers and there wouldn't be outside seating. I get that you need to prioritize your staff and maybe it's because I've never worked in a restaurant, but I just don't see why you can't just accommodate a table outside. Despite these hiccups the manager really tried to work with us (I explained that some members of our family are immunocompromised) to give us a table downstairs that was farther from other tables. It wasn't perfect but it worked. We really didn't want to give up our meal at Dishoom which was a highlight of our 2017 trip to London. We got a few of the dishes I remembered from 2017, like the gunpowder potatoes. They are still the best dish at Dishoom and frankly I haven't found the same anywhere. This brings up an interesting point. I kind of don't *want* to like Dishoom. It's so popular and it feels like it's where white people go for Indian food. We eat Indian food ALL the time in the San Francisco Bay Area - where we live in Silicon Valley there are endless options - but Dishoom makes authentic food and does it well. Their dishes are always either equal or better to the dishes I know, plus they have a few dishes all their own, and I have trouble thinking of an Indian restaurant anywhere that I like more. We had the chana salad, which was cold and a nice counterpoint to our hot dishes. The chicken biryani and samosas (three small ones) were both solid renditions, though not groundbreaking. The chicken tikka was fine but the husband's least favorite of our dishes. The roomali roti was serviceable, but the standout was the garlic naan. It can sometimes be bitter elsewhere but was pretty great here. My daughter can't handle spicy food so she was happy with the biryani, the chana salad, and the potatoes. They weren't too spicy, especially with raita. For dessert the daughter and the husband shared the mawa (I may have the name wrong) cake with yuzu ice cream, which was really good. The son and I shared the chocolate pudding with chili ice cream. It was amazing. The pudding reminded me of a lava cake with chocolate sauce inside, and I love the combination of chocolate and chili together. The daughter is allergic to cashews and pistachios and they were very careful to tell us what items on the menu had those nuts. As our dishes arrived they were announced to us with a flourish, "Here are the cashew and pistachio free gunpowder potatoes" and "Here is the cashew and pistachio free chicken biryani." These are dishes that are nut free to begin with. But it's so much better that they're hyper aware than not aware at all. I particularly like Dishoom's chocolate chai. It's my favorite that I've found anywhere. Plus they give free refills. The best part is the last third of the glass which gets a bit more chocolatey. read more

The butter chicken is probably the best I've ever had and we've eaten Indian all over in our travels through Europe and the US, but the rest of the dishes were just average. I had last eaten at Dishoom in London over 10 years ago and was excited to know that there was a location in Edinburgh. I was seated upstairs and the bathroom is on the bottom underground floor, so I had to go down two long sets of stairs to wash my hands before eating. I made a lunch reservation and ordered the Chai Tea, Okra Fries, Tandoori Lamb Chops. This is a family-style spot, so as a single diner I wasn't able to try as much as I wanted. After ordering, the waiter asked if I wanted some Papadum for the table - do not assume this is free because you do get charged for it. I ordered the Chai tea, and I heard the same waiter tell the table next to me that it was bottomless - something he never told me. The okra fries and lamb chops were good, but I regret not trying the Chicken Ruby. Overall for a $60 lunch, this spot was good but I would like to come back with friends so I can try more dishes! read more

People go crazy for this unique Indian restaurant and I run into many Californians and other Americans ( so nice to meet countrymen an women far from home ) waiting in the line or their waiting area which is bar at the basement . My husband and I are still talking about our dining experience from 2 months later. As soon as we began planning our trip to Scotland, immediately we made a reservation at Dishoom after hearing nothing but wonderful things. We made sure to go with empty stomachs and big eyes. Our waitress was incredible in helping guide us in our decision making for our order. They definitely maximize their space and the tables are close together so don't be afraid to get friendly with the table next to you. Each dish we ordered was more flavorful than the next. The special lamb dish was pretty good and I wasn't a fan of the fish curry but folks liked it. The aubergine chutney was really delicious and the side sauces improved the dishes I wasn't crazy about. Best restaurant I've ever been to and it isn't even a contest. Went twice on my last trip to Edinburgh, so got a great variety of food. The downstairs bar is a great place to wait for a table (if you've foolishly forgotten a reservation, as we did). The drinks are good and have interesting twists on classics. The food is just excellent. The black daal is a necessary purchase, I think. Goes very well with the naans. We also loved the lamb chops (and the lamb biryani special that was on), and the mattar paneer. The vada pau was great too, I could sing praises on every single item. Another tip - the chai does come with refills. I think I had about four on a brunch visit. I can't wait to come back (and do my best to use the cookbook to replicate it in the meantime). read more

So delicious! And great service too! With great ambiance and park views. We enjoyed our all our food, most especially the Keema Pau. It was absolutely delicious! The minced lamb was cooked with peas and paired perfectly with raw red onions and buttery toasted buns. With a drizzle of lemon too, it was amazing. Another highlight was the chicken berry britannia biryani. It was such a nice addition to the meal and had was nicely seasoned. The Edinburgh Special (lamb in a delicious sauce with crispy chips) was also so tasty and worth recommending too.
