Unperturbed by its 'spicy' name, my mum and I stumbled upon this place on a day out and decided to take advantage of the pre-theatre menu for £9.95. And what a surprise. The staff were friendly and attentive (maybe a little too attentive). The food was beautiful. For starters, we got 2 poppadoms with spiced onions, chicken pakora and haggis pakora. The haggis pakora was very nice and different and the pakora came with two delicious sauces. The presentation was marvellous with streaks of sauce, grated vegetables and a sprig of mint. For our main courses, we had lamb korma, chicken tikka masala, pilau rice and a peshwari nan. The lamb korma was unbelievably good and the peshwari nan went very well with it. We couldn't fault this meal. We ate every crumb. Our bill altogether was close to £27 which was great considering we got poppadoms, nan bread, a drink and a coffee as extras. Good value for what was a gorgeous meal. Great ambience too. Wonderful decor and traditional Indian music. Very relaxing. We're definitely going to go back to this place. We may try out the lunch buffet on another one of our 'mother-daughter' days out. Super place. Sometimes it's tough to find a gem of a restaurant in Edinburgh and we were lucky to choose this one at random!

The food is solid. The staff is also welcoming. Only complaint is that it can get a bit pricey for a curry.

Great food. We had vegetarian dishes. Taste was quite close to what we get back home.

The bun maska was perfectly drenched in butter, and the chai was hot and comforting. The chili chicken was also really flavorful with the perfect spice level. For our mains, we got the Ruby Chicken and House Black Dal with garlic naan, chili paratha, and a side of plain rice. The Ruby Chicken had a delicious tomato gravy, and the chicken pieces were really soft. The dal was thick and creamy. Everything paired together so well. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself was beautiful, with a Bombay-inspired atmosphere. There's seating both upstairs and downstairs, and while we didn't have any issues, I've heard there can be long wait times. Our server was friendly, although the service felt a little sloppy at times. They also surprised us with complimentary champagne since we were celebrating a special occasion, which was really nice. I found the portions to be a little smaller, and it's definitely on the pricier side, but I think it's worth the splurge. If you're visiting the UK, I'd definitely recommend checking out Dishoom!

And the service is attentive. It's a beautiful thing to witness, even better to experience. My Negroni order was sent to the bar while my server and I chatted about what I might like. So efficient. I ended up ordering a couple of small plates. A spicy lamb dish and a hot/cold combo of yogurt and mashed hot veggies. Rather quickly my drink was served and a short while later my food appeared. Those small plates were not so small! Loads of food for one, perfect starters for two. Finished with a house chai - delicious!

The last stellar rating was 3 years ago and that should tell you something. The food is mediocre,…read morebut what really garnered the low score is the shakedown one gets from the staff expecting a big tip for poor service. First we had to wait nearly 20 minutes just to get a waiter to come over to give us water. The food took more than 30 minutes for an appetizer and one main and bread. We were lucky. Both couples seated on either side of us, and who were there when we were seated, were still waiting for their food after us. The place was only 50% full, so not sure why service was so poor. Tables are so close together that you worry that your bottom will clear the table next to you when getting up and down! When the bill finally came, we couldn't wait to leave and pick up what remained of our afternoon. We paid cash to hurry the process, leaving a 10% tip which was generous considering our experience. One of the staff came over took the bill and came back saying that they didn't have a service charge. Yeah, so? He kept repeating that there was no service charge included, so we should consider a larger tip. What a shakedown! BEWARE. This restaurant provides shoddy service, blah food and then will try and embarrass you to give them a hearty tip. Stay away!

I found this place as rated one of the better Indian restaurants in Edinburgh that does vegan options. I don't get it. We arrived for dinner on a Monday, and their vegan menu online was not shown on the dine-in menu, so I asked the server about this, and they told me what could be made vegan -- at least they were familiar with the concept. We got a vegan Balti and vegan Rogan Josh (each about £10.50), plus some tandoor roti (£3.50 each) and papadams and dipping sauce (another ~£4). The Rogan Josh was the oiliest Indian dish I've ever tried had in my life. The dish was swimming in oil. Beyond that, there wasn't much complexity in flavour beyond high saltiness. The Balti had the same saltiness / lack of depth issue, but at least wasn't as oily. We were quite disappointed in the lack of flavour depth in both dishes, especially compared to the Indian food you can get in the UK in general. What's more, the portion sizes were not especially big, so we really relied on the roti to be full. Very disappointing Indian food overall. We would definitely not return.
