Shop Around & Get Quotes for Better Pricing & Service I am…read morewriting this personal opinion review to encourage others to shop around before contracting with Jason Penrod and Family Elder Law (FEL) - scroll to the end of this review for a list of recommended attorneys offering the same service for less than half the price of FEL. In a nutshell, my family contacted FEL for a simple irrevocable trust (IT) for the benefit of our mother who has dementia. The trust was to be funded with just 3 assets: her mobile home, car, and CDs issued from the same bank. We were quoted a price of $8000 by Mr. Penrod. We were astonished by such a high price for such a simplistic IT. However, we agreed to the price, erroneously believing that the elevated pricing included management of the trust, which we later discovered it did not. I will only state that my sister and I were very busy and in such a hurry to get the IT drafted that we did not take the time to obtain quotes from other attorneys, and that was our foolish mistake. It was not until another attorney I know in Florida told me that we could have gotten the IT (with Medicaid Asset Protection Trust (MAPT) elements) for half of what we paid Family Elder Law that I took the time to actually contact other attorney offices and verified this as true. Based upon these findings, we asked Mr. Penrod for a $3000 partial refund. Our request was denied. As such, I want to educate others and give recommendations to the following reputable, reasonably priced firms operating in the same geographical area as FEL The below quotes are for the exact same service with the exact same assets for which Family Elder Law charged us $8000. Be advised that these attorney firms are not "elder law" specialists. However, to draft the simplistic templated IT/MAPT that we received - and wishing to fund it with only 3 noncomplicated assets - an elder law specialist is not required. An estate planning attorney, or even an attorney with trust drafting experience is equally as qualified, this opinion is based upon my being a retired California attorney. Back in July I closed on my home. Looking back after having the knowledge I have now, there were very clear signs of a bad rodent infestation that was never disclosed. I say very bad because they were eating my pipes which led to several parts of the flooring and walls being infested with mold. There were clear signs of rodents eating through the under lining of the home and the guy told me it was just something the owners probably cut out due to maintenance. I had a plumbing inspection as well and they did not catch the holes in the drains. From July- October I started to suffer from serious mold poisoning. I was lethargic and my brain was not working like it normally does. On top of this I was experiencing serious chest pains, truly I cant express how bad they were. While I am lucky and have a family with connections in construction, who literally found out these problems on accident when working on an electrical issue, others may not be as lucky. I also paid extra for the termite inspection and while there was no current termite activity, they failed to include signs of previous activity. They took advantage of my fresh and eager attitude and if you choose to work with them, please be careful. ****Update*** It is not letting me respond to the comment the company left. There was never any mention of any plumbing concerns in my report or to me. On top of this, yes they told me about the area that was ripped up (by rodents) that had mold. They told me to fix, by cutting out the board, replacing the board, and patching it up, and i'd be fine. Which I did. They did not mention elsewhere. Also, where this mold was, wasn't even close to where the majority of the mold in my home was found. This was in the kitchen and I had to rip up both bathrooms. I just reread my inspection documents and it literally says all of my plumbing is satisfactory. While I understand you are trying to save face for your company, you guys did not do justice to this service for me and I do not want someone else experiencing the same thing. Thank you.
