Well, I was pumped on their selection till after I got Back to our hotel room and realized that one of the albums was a bootleg and it didn't have anything stating so on a sticker or what not. I messaged them to let them know And ask some questions. and whoever responded was short and just told me I could return it if I didn't want it. Told me it "wasn't an original". I asked what that meant and received no response. It got me to thinking about out albums I saw there that also didn't seem right or as they said "original". So buyers beware if you're looking for authentic. This place may dupe you. read more

Is there anything more ironic than the popularity of the vinyl revolution among millennials? This is the generation that prides itself on being the most advanced and technologically savvy one ever in history. The same folks that eschew "ancient" things like the telephone (you're actually calling me? How rude!) and think growing a beard and donning new $250 Blundstones is an instant way to become a bonafide hunk of a male specimen (I also eat a lot of bacon, you know). One would logically think that millennials would similarly frown upon old music technology like the turntable, but oh no. What a twist! Who could have predicted how much 20 to 30 somethings have a love affair with vinyl - or as many of us old curmudgeons used to know them - as plain ol' records. Yes, records. Anyone over 40 grew up knowing them as records: those stacks of plastic discs that used to lay in piles in everyone's shag-carpeted living room. Of course, we all turfed records for the more advanced technology that came after. Like cassettes in the 1980s (WTF were we thinking there?), and again in the 1990s with compact discs (why do they make me think of Brian "the Boz" Bozworth's hair). Vinyl had a rough go in those years, much like Pamela Anderson. Everyone wanted her when she was in her prime, but the years that followed were not kind. Other, younger women (also with more advanced technological features) came along and stole away the attention. But vinyl bucked the trend, and came back in popularity in the 2000s. First signs were when people started scooping up old Zeppelin and Floyd records at yard sales. Then came parties where people dropped the needle on bad ass funk LPs to the delight of tipsy dancing white girls everywhere. All of a sudden, brawls began to break out at Value Village over who got to score crappy LPs of progressive rock bands like Alan Parsons Project. Who'd have thunk that by the mid-2010s, people would be paying $15 for scratched up a Harry Chapin record at a dedicated store? Yes, that same record we were so happy to give away or throw around as Frisbees at one time. Enter Ditch Records. Ditch epitomizes everything wrong with the current vinyl craze. And I don't mean to denigrate vinyl as a format for listening to music. It's pretty clear that it is a unique listening experience that isn't captured by CDs or MP3s. Superior in some ways for sure. But the vinyl craze has gotten ridiculous. When you peruse the aisles at Ditch it becomes painfully clear that it's now about the music anymore. The band does not matter either, nor whether the music is any good. Rather, if it's vinyl, it has to be good. Or so it would seem. And the more obscure the record, the better. This is the philosophy behind Ditch. Overpriced markups on mediocre quality records? Check. Snooty customer service courtesy toque-adorned millennials? Roger that. Dirty looks if you ask for music from a band that isn't cool? Well, that depends, as "cool" can change by the week (this week Roger Whitaker's early stuff is mad hot). Who knew that my old French 10 teacher who loved those records was such a hipster music visionary? Honestly, I'd like Ditch a lot more if the prices weren't so ridiculously high across the board. I think most stuff is marked up about 30% higher than what they should be. Especially for the crappy stuff. Pricing so high for records that were never good in the first place just makes the whole vinyl thing ridiculous. It makes me wonder if this is about music at all, or just a millennial-fuelled fad. I couldn't care less if they want to charge big dollar for vintage classic rock, but let's keep prices real for the less-than-collectible vinyl. For this reason, you may want to ditch the Ditch for a more down-to-earth record shop in town, like the Turntable. The prices for that rare pressing may not be much better, but at least you will come away feeling like it is somehow more worth it. read more

Came here first because internet research showed it as only one of two record stores in Victoria. Loved it. Exactly what I expected. They have a great selection of indie records (less so for the classic records, but then there's "Turntable" just a block away for that.) I asked the people behind the counter for recommendations of places to go in the neighborhood and they hooked me up with a bunch of places to get food and drink which was really, really nice. read more

This is a extremely fun store to shop at. Tons of albums and massive variety. Prices are fair, that being said records are double the price since I started collecting. Best part of ditch are the staff. They all pay close attention to what's going on in the local scene and they help promote local talent by selling tickets and their Cd's or vinyl albums. Best record store in town. They have an excellent selection of new and old records at decent prices. They have a nice listening station as well (for you to sample before you buy). I've placed special orders with much success as well. The staff is laid back, friendly and helpful. I like this place so much that I have to avoid it when I'm downtown...for my wallet's sake. When I lived in Victoria ditch used to be one of my favorite places to visit on a day off. They have a great selection of both new and used vinyl. Since I have moved I came back to Vic and heard that ditch moved locations too. The new store has tons more space with a much better selection. A lot more great used albums especially. Ditch's selection consists of a lot of new vinyl releases and reissues with an equal amount of previously spun stuff. I was in Victoria for a few days recently, and I had to go on my obligatory record hunt, as is required whenever I hit a new city. I put my iPhone on its "vinyl" setting and followed the arrow which pointed me to the Ditch. What impressed me the most is their humble stock of 7" singles going all the way back to the '80s...the '70s even. I knew I was in a cool shop when I spotted the 1989 reissue of the Beatles 'Get Back' single. You know, the picture disc '45s that were released in the '80s to coincide with the twentieth anniversaries of each single release? Of course you do. It was twenty five bucks. I hope that was a good price. The staff are cool and courteous; they let me place my coffee on the sales counter while I was browsing and I'm confident that they didn't drink any of it. They didn't even laugh at me when I discovered that I had apparently left my bank card in the last ATM machine I visited. That's when I found out that they do accept credit cards. (Watch for my review of that ATM vestibule later.) I thought it was kinda weird that they were playing the latest Lady Gaga when I walked in, but I didn't let that ruin their street cred. Maybe they just wanted to show that they're not really the musical snobs that some of the earlier reviewers claim they are. By the way, if you go in there looking for the original '45 of Thin Lizzy's 'Waiting for an Alibi' from 1979, still in the sleeve...don't bother, I already picked it up there. Sorry. It's a big store too...lots of space. It doesn't conform to the rule that record shops must be small and claustrophobic. Sorry. read more

A very cool place with a diverse selection that feels more like a CD shop from the early '90s than anywhere I've been in the interim. Large numbers of categories, and a slightly-weird filing system, with side projects and solo acts being grouped under the bands with which they're associated. But then the music of New Order and Joy Division are separate, and for that matter music by Electronic does not unite New Order, Pet Shop Boys and the Smiths. So you'll spend more time than you'd think trying to locate the band you're looking for, but when you do there might be some very special things. When I was there, most of a New Order collection pressed by GEMA was there, so you had lovely old German issues of the whole back catalogue, including some very collectible releases and all are reasonable prices. Unusual EPs and maxi singles abounded for nearly every artist I checked, which was wonderful, and all-too-uncommon today. The world music selection was even slightly messier, but still impressive. Even including some non-traditional music from some of those regions, though sadly not very much; no post-punk from Brazil or Argentina, despite the wonderful post-punk output of both of those countries. But hey, if you're looking for a dozen bossa nova compilations or more, they've got you covered! read more

If you're into indie-rock, I guess it is good. However, for anyone else it has very little to offer. This is not primarily a used record store where you will find all kinds of old stuff that was never released on CD. It pretty much exclusively caters to people who like to spend $30+ for a vinyl of a new release that is available for half the price on CD, because it fits their hipster persona and because they insist that "vinyl sounds better!" (Of course, it doesn't. It sounds much worse, but that's a whole other discussion.) If you buy vinyl for your image rather than for the thrill of finding old recordings, then you will love this store. If you want lots of selection from genres all over the musical spectrum, try "the turntable" in fantan alley, or lyle's place on yates. (lyle's is mostly CDs, but they have great used prices!) read more

A fine record store with a great selection of new and used records and CD's. I could have dug in and stayed a while but the family was waiting .... Knowledgable staff who specialize and curate their stock to appeal to fans of 60's and 70's rock pop and psych, jazz, punk, post punk, a good chunk of reggae, African and modern rock. Prices were decent and not to outrageous given that some vinyl is collectible and now commands a higher price. If you are in the area definitely check it out. read more

If I lived in Victoria I would be a regular, if you find yourself in the need of anything indie than this place is a must, easy to navigate and full of the usual suspects the real draw here is the nice collection of records and the used discs, the only drawback might be the limited selection, but still highly recommended! read more

I prefer jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and world. When you walk into a music store, they usually have a decent selection of R&B and hip-hop, but slim in jazz and world. This store had a pretty decent selection of jazz and world. The problem with world music is that they usually mark it up to the $18-20 range, and this was indeed the case, which is why I usually scope out the used stuff. Even the used stuff was higher than I wanted to pay. So I would probably hit another store before I try Ditch, but if the other stores don't carry what you're looking for, it's probably going to be at Ditch, although you will have to pay top dollar for it. I rate it four stars for the selection, minus one for the high prices. read more

Highly recommend!!! Don't hesitate to stop in. Such a solid curation of CD's and record. Up to date on contemporary albums, as well as the classics. Good mix of jazz, rock/pop, electronic, blues, and hip hop surprisingly enough. They didn't have a huge amount of stock, but it didn't seem to matter because they had copies of stuff I couldn't find at Amobea Records in Hollywood. Employees were knowledgable, talked to one for 10 minutes about the official vinyl release of TPAB. read more

Great shop. Mostly reissues, which is not really my thing, but there are a few original gems in there too. If you are into vinyl and not worried about originals vs reissues, there is certainly a very good selection. Great selection of recent bootlegs on vinyl too. Prices are a little high, but then again all vinyl seems expensive these days. As a vinyl hunter this is worth an hour of your time at the very least. read more
