I've visited Port Townsend several times, but this was my first visit to this uber cool indie shop. They've been in business since 1974, clearly I've been under a rock! This is your vinyl destination for mint albums and rare, nostalgic finds. Terrific support for local labels and bands. Wow, what a selection! The Homie was in heaven having found two albums he couldn't find at other indies in Seattle. Add in sale Tshirts and buttons, he was a happy camper on this road trip. The shop is worth a leisurely inspection. There are turntables, Tshirts, posters, books, buttons, and oh did I mention vinyl from various genre?! The two gentlemen at the shop were really pleasant. One manned the turnable in the back, the other covered the front register who also greeted folks stopping in. Both took the time for a quick convo. Trust me, this was a welcomed contrast to what we experienced earlier at another breakfast spot. Cue up the lyric, 'you are as cold as ice...' I digress. Yes, Quimper Sound Records is a worthy indie shop along Water to stop in, locate potential cool finds, and drop considerable green. I genuinely enjoy this record store and have purchased some really awesome LP's here! But their new policy about requiring proof of ownership of a turntable feels really elitist and lame. I get that it's frustrating to have oglers come in and never buy anything but I, a self proclaimed "record nerd," often go to record stores and don't find anything or go just to look at albums. Record stores should be inclusive places for music lovers of all kinds, whether it be a kid who doesn't have access to a turntable but wants to look at vinyl and listen to tunes or a die hard record lover. I do love this store and have considered it a favorite for many years but this is somewhat disappointing. read more

I stopped by here on a recent trip to Seattle. I'm a sucker for independent record stores. Though I'm sure I contributed to the demise of these brick and mortar establishments by downloading my music or streaming through Spotify, I still like to get nostalgic and go in when I see one. When I walked in, I noticed the awesome artwork on the walls. They were all old playbill posters from various artists from various shows around the world. Most of them were actually signed by the artists (creator/not bands). I purchased a print that had Smashing Pumpkins and Garbage on the same show (a show that I missed because I was too young to attend) as well as No Doubt poster from their Tragic Kingdom era. All three of these bands were huge to me in my pre-teen years and I still proudly follow them to this day. It was a one man operation and they had a great variety of music. Need another reason to stop? They serve coffee/espresso as well! The person that helped me was beyond helpful and talked about the artwork and music like they were his own creations. This is one aspects I miss in this download-era we live in. read more

I love browsing through used cd stores! You can usually find some great stuff, and the prices are great too! They moved into a new location about a year ago, and they now have a little cafe inside. The employees are always friendly, and helpful! read more

Ohhh, this place is darling. I spent a great deal of time here with my friends this past weekend rummaging around the selection (which was really quite good). The shop was lovely, easy to navigate, and in a great location in town. Above all, I really want to remark on how nice the shop owner was (Mark, I believe). He was such a nice guy, really knowledgeable and passionate about music, and added such charm to our visit to Port Townsend. He's got a great shop going, and his friendliness makes the shop a must-visit for anybody in the area. Keep your head above water, man! read more

Such a divine music store in PT. Pluses: -They now have a coffee bar inside! -Black light posters and other retro posters (found a replica of the Keep on Truckin poster I had as a confused youth) -Fine collection of retro vinyl as well as the new stuff. -Star Trek cups. -While I didn't see the old bumper sticker they used to sell for Port Townsend, "We're all here because we're not all there"...I still give them 5 stars for once selling it and keeping this gem of a music store unique and cool and all that....WITH coffee! read more

Great little record store with a surprisingly good selection of classic rock. Things are well organized, the staff is friendly, and it's a cool little place down a fun little stairway under some of the old buildings in PT. Prices are a little on the high side for used records, but not "insanely expensive" as another reviewer claimed. But then again, you can't find vinyl copies of Tool Undertow at $12.99 "at most places". Or any place that I could find on the web. So take what you read with a grain of salt. Prices are comparable to what you find on discogs for used records in similar condition. I'm lucky to have a really great record store here in Olympia where I live, but they don't always have the hard to find stuff like the two Zappa records I picked up at Quimper. I have shopped record stores all over Seattle and Tacoma and this place stacks up nicely against some of the larger record stores in the Northwest. I'm happy to throw down some money in a place like this to help support a small independent local store. read more

Had some decent records. Like most people said, the records are a little overpriced but not outrageously priced. The owner seems to not socialize unless you're socializing with him. The 45s were stuck together which seems to be some water damage and neglecting care. But when i checked out the owner was pretty ice and informative on the records. Decent experience read more

Lots of potential, but I have a hard time finding anything here that I want to buy. Inventory seems stale and records are often in questionable condition. There's some really interesting titles available in the vinyl section, although I didn't check prices (I don't have a record player to begin with). By the front of the store, there's a smattering of DVDs, but nothing that really interested me. Most of the CDs were REALLY expensive. Some titles were $18-20 for a regular CD. Used CDs were also expensive (generally over $6 apiece, even the ones with pretty scuzzy cases). Most of the CDs are rock, as are all of the used CDs I saw. There were smaller sections for country, hip hop/rap, etc, but there were no used sections for these genres. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I live in an area with many record stores, which I'm sure must drive the prices down some. That must not be the case in Port Townsend; the closest record store to Quimper Sound is apparently in Seattle (according to Yelp, at least). read more

I'm a sucker for music stores. I really am. The gravitational pull of a record shop draws me in from a across the street to my delight and the annoyance of all my friends. From the first time me and my wife went here we have loved this place. It's the record shop we dreamed of opening when we were first dating. Coffee plus records equals dream of mine. The way this place is decorated is hip without a hit of the pretentious hipster vibe you usually get at record stores. The workers will chat your ear off about music. Sometimes they even put out free posters and cds in the lounge up front. I've found some real gems here (JMJ's Oxygen last time I was there) and it always makes digging through the used section worth it. The only down marks I can think of are in the electronic music section but I really don't expect a lot of stores to know enough about the genre to stock it well. Well worth going inside. Plus the coffee is good. read more

This store is insanely expensive for what they sell. For example; Tool's "Undertow" is available on vinyl for around $12.99 at most places, including Amazon and Fry's. Here, it was around $30, for the exact same pressing. As well, a horribly damaged basically unplayable looking copy of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" that really belongs in the dollar section is $7. Pretty much everything is around this price point, and the selection itself is not really that great. I have no idea why this store overprices like this; it's completely ridiculous and an insult to record collectors. The only reason that this isn't a one star review is because the atmosphere of the store is great, and the people working there are very nice people. I do not recommend this if you're wanting to buy LPs though; save your money and either buy online or go to a different store. read more
