I first found Ben as I needed a blow out before an event, and my first experience was great. He runs the entire salon himself, he does take walk ins but it's best if you call ahead of time. I then went back to Ben for a hair color! I wanted to go dark and he delivered. No green or unwanted color in my hair, and of course the perfect blow out. I was desperate for a hair cut after just recently moving to Astoria, and after a quick Yelp search I went with Diva. I asked my hairdresser for just a trim, with some angles and layers. I told her that I part my hair to the right, and she told me that she was going to put more "detail" into it at the end. She cut my hair, dried it, and then went into said "detail" - except that the detail left my hair completely lop-sided - I have way more layering and angling on the right side of my head then I do my left, and when I made a comment about it she told me that the left side was "too thin" and that I needed to let it "grow out" - Ummmm....ok...but when I walked into the salon my hair was even...and now it's not...so I'm going to go ahead and say that that's her fault. Bottom line: pay a little more for a better hair cut somewhere else. read more

Usually I do the hair modeling thing each year, but the places I go to didn't have the availability I needed, so I haven't had a haircut in over a year and a half. However, I desperately needed a haircut before my Disney World vacation (hot weather + water rides + long hair = not fun), so I Yelp'd reviews in my area. Finding none that had awesome reviews, I expanded my search to all of Queens and found Diva Hair Salon. I made a quick call for an appointment the day of and headed over. I thought finding parking would suck, but it didn't, so I ended up getting there an hour early. Lana was with another customer who didn't know what color highlights she wanted and her hair was a mess, so she had her assistant wash my hair first. She was still with the customer after, so Alex ended up cutting my hair; I hadn't specified any particular person, so I was very open to whoever cut it. Alex asked me how I wanted my cut, and I told him specifics but also asked what he thought would look good. He pretty much told me he had the same idea, so it was a go from there. Since my hair was super long (literally to my butt), I had wanted to get it banded to donate, which I actually forgot until he mentioned it. Thank God he noticed the length! After chopping it off in one swoop, he went to work on my layers. Throughout the haircut, Alex was very attentive and focused on what he was doing, asking me if everything was to my liking along the way and also making small talk. I'm very animated when I speak so getting a haircut while talking is not my forte, otherwise we would have had a full conversation. Anyway, he snipped and combed, snipped, blew dry, snipped some more. There were about 3 or 4 times when I thought he was finished, but then he kept going, which I loved because it shows he's making sure everything is precise. Finally it was time to flat iron and after a bit more snipping, he was done. He showed me the back too and everything was perfect! All for only $30!! They take credit card too, but make sure to carry cash for tips. Diva is a fantastic salon at a very affordable price! Although it's tiny and doesn't look like much from the outside, it's AMAZING! For the first time, I think I got a haircut I actually like. Right now, I am in awe and shock. Am I dreaming? Nope, I just went to Diva Hair Salon. Methinks this is a two-person stylist operation. I didn't specify the stylist, so I got Alex (instead of the woman). The salon is painted Ninjia turtle green (not in a bad way, in a new, different kind of way). It has three salon chairs and one chair for washing hair. Busiest days are Friday and Saturday. There were many walk-ins right when they opened up (my appointment was at 9:30 am on Saturday). THE HAIRCUT! I was sick of my way too long hair (almost up to the small of my back). I needed an updated look and a stylist who I felt comfortable with. Alex definitely delivered. (I have Asian, naturally, straight, black hair - for those who are trying to evaluate if he will be a good fit). He chopped off all my hair to a little longer than shoulder length and relieved me of my burdensome locks. Hurray to my savior! The cut was cute - angled with some choppy texture, something I needed. My bangs needed a lot of work, so we worked together to figure out what fitted me. I would ask him to cut a little more, snip a little there, and we got great results. He definitely listened to me and tried to give me a haircut I owned and loved. Great place. They only charged me $30 for my super long hair, whereas other places have always charged me the long hair price even though I got a trim. -_- Anyways, this place is AWESOME. Try it out. read more

Sad... got to my appointment on time and someone else's haircut was being finished up. That's fine, I'm okay with waiting. While waiting, someone else comes in who had missed her appointment earlier that day. She was clearly friends with the owner, as they were chatting each other up. After 20 minutes of waiting, I was rushed into the chair without getting my hair washed (and it really needed to be washed). My hair was straightened and cut with lightning speed, I was charged the same amount I had been charged previously for a wash, cut, and blow dry, and was whisked out of there. I had to fix my bangs myself when I got home, as they were cut unevenly. I got to my appointment on time, but was hastily pushed out of the way for someone who had missed theirs. I have been here ~3 times so far and I absolutely love this hair salon. Ben is awesome! He takes his time (I never feel like he is rushing to get to his next client), the salon is clean, he is affordable and he follows the COVID protocols, which I appreciate. But most importantly, he does a fantastic job on my highlights every time. I always feel like a million dollars walking out of the salon. I called last week and made an appointment for today at 11:30. I thought it was strange that the guy took my name and gave me an appointment time but didn't take my phone number. But ok. I showed up today at 11:25 and the door is locked and the place is dark. I waited 15 minutes and no one showed up. Definitely less than professional I came across the street to Gigi where they are very friendly and took me in right away. I went to Diva for the first time on Thursday 5/26. I called on Wednesday and asked if I could come in for a haircut on Thursday. He asked what time. I said late 4 or 5. He said 5 pm. I always ask if they have senior discounts. I asked how much for a haircut? He said just a haircut? I said yes. He said $25. That was a great price so I didn't ask about discount. I took the bus and got off at 36 street and walked down to 35 street. I couldn't find it and so I called. He said there is no sign on store front but I have you down for Friday at 5. He said he has highlights now. It will take an hour. I didn't want to waste the two fares and another two fares if I came back so I asked if I could wait. He said yes. I decided to wait. While he was doing the highlights, he and the client were friendly and obviously knew each other. He was right about the time. It took exactly one hour. I showed him a picture. Basically a short layer cut. When he finished he said $35. I said you said $25. I showed him my note, which had Diva, Thursday, 5 pm, $25. He said you can write down anything, no it's $25 for a men's cut. It's $35 but I'll charge you $30. And that's the comment that I thought was rude and insulting. So how do I know he wrote my appointment for Friday. I didn't see the appointment book. He could say anything. Did he just bump me for his client? And the haircut looks nothing like the picture. In the picture the sides come down over ear and sideburns come down to bottom of ear. Mine is chopped off above ear and sides come halfway down ear. I don't know what that is on top of head but it isn't soft and fluffy as in picture. Guess I have to wait for it to grow out. Overall, very disappointed and no trust that any future appointment won't be bumped for favorite clients. I won't be back. read more

Call and ask for Lana, he will tell you that "she is sick" BUT IT'S NOT TRUE! Lana is gone, going on a long needed vacation to her country to see her family. We'll be lucky to ever see her again and even luckier to ever get our hair done with her again. I myself am super sad, and am on the hunt for a new hair stylist. P.S. Alex is no longer working at Diva Salon (as of March 2012 ) so if anyone knows where he is now working at please contact me. I am not familar with the other sylist who works there so not sure if this review is relevant anymore, I was a little nervous about this place because it looks a little run down from the outside. This modest little place with it's very very bright green walls is definitely a gem in the rough! I was treated like royalty (yes, for NYC this is a huge customer service shocker!) and basic consideration. Everyone was so nice it was a little surreal. One woman washed my hair, then I was seated in a chair and greeted by Alex. It was really chilly that morning so he offered me a blanket for my lap! What a gentleman! He took the time to hear about and look at the examples of the type of haircut I wanted and the end result is one of the best haircuts I have received in nyc! The price was reasonable too! Because of the reasonable price I can afford to tip these well deserving artists well to reflect the excellent skill and artistry that they provide. Can't wait to return for my next haircut! I had such a great experience at Diva! Lana was very nice and made me feel really comfortable from the start. I'm not a fan of really sheik snooty salons, but Diva is really cute! It has bright green, cheery walls and paper lanterns. Lana helped me pick out a great color to dye my hair and proceeded to give me a lap cushion & a stack of magazines while she got to work on my color. While the color was setting, she even went out and got me a cup of coffee! My color came out great, she gave me a *perfect* haircut after and then dried and styled my hair into beautiful loose curls!! The whole trip including color, cut, blowout & style was $110. I also wasn't sure if i wanted bangs and she told me if I decided that I want them, I could come back & she would cut them for free! She does as good of a job as any high-end salon without making you feel uncomfortable or charging a ton of money. I plan to go back for highlights & hopefully keratin treatment if i can ever afford it! Also, while I was there people came in for walk-in appointments, so she does accept them, however, she was too busy and unable to take them at that time so you are better off making an appointment if you really need something done by a certain time/day. read more

This place is a No.... I went because I was in dyer emergency and just wanted my hair cut. I called and went in an hr later. Ben cut my hair but I had to wait a half hr for him while he was cutting two gentleman at the same time. He got the job done, but this is definitely not the place to go for a great hair cut especially for that feel great feeling after your done. It literally took Ben all of 15 minutes to cut my hair with two interruptions. Maria, the assistant washed my hair like I had never had my hair washed before, I definitely dont need to wash it now for like a week. She was definitely rough like other reviews have touched on, but I didn't mind because I have thick long hair. Im not tender headed at all so it was actually really nice and enjoyable. Although, I did have to tell her twice that the water was too cold... which definitely ruins the experience. The place is super small... and Maria speaks no english... she did try and make me comfortable gave me a pillow to put on my lap with some magazines but then later threw the smock over me and I couldn't read any more. Ben was nice... he made a little joke which made me feel a bit more conformable but with past experiences he didnt really cut my hair the way a professional beautician would. Over all...It got the job done, Im going to go to a nicer place in a few weeks to get some more cut and styled better and the price of it was cheep I have long thick hair and Ben charged me 25$ to be nice i tipped him 3 and gave Maria 2 bucks. I literally just signed up for Yelp.com in order to review Diva Salon. I'm NOTTTTT hired by anyone! I just wanted to defend Ben because I think he's great. (FYI, I have never had my hair cut by Lana) I first had my haircut by Ben about 7 months ago. Like everyone else, I was (and still am) extremely distrustful of hairstylists -- I was paying upwards of $50-$70 and leaving the salon EMBARRASSED! Literally putting my hair in a ponytail as soon as I walked out the door. I think a lot of that had to do with expectations... the more you pay, the more you expect. So, I was coming to Ben with considerably lowered expectations due my experiences, plus the affordable prices ($30 for a medium/long). Surprisingly, I left satisfied and even happy with my haircut. I appreciated the fact that he even complimented my own handiwork (I had just cut my own bangs). I went back tonight for the second time, and was pleasantly surprised that he remembered me. He took his time cutting, drying, cutting again, blowing out, and even straightening my hair -- even as two women waited with wet hair! (there are only 3 chairs total, it's a small space) While I was so uncomfortable with those two women waiting for me, he was cool as a cucumber and even took the time to dab some argan oil on my hand to show me it was good for the skin, lol. His assistant was sweet and I enjoyed her head massage, but she was also a bit clumsy and got my sweater wet while washing me. I really respected the fact that Ben did not criticize or humiliate her for her small errors in front of me, or order her around like a servant. Overall, I love that Ben is SUPER relaxed, confident, and respectful. He even managed to be discreet when basically asking if I was tipping... and there is almost no discreet way to do that. (I don't know if the card- swipe machine is broken, but he explained that he couldn't add on additional amounts after swiping my card). And, added bonus, I am happy with my haircut! Maybe Ben isn't best technically or from a professional's standpoint.... but if you're super uptight and have some crazy standard of perfection for your haircut -- you probably shouldn't be going to a $30-hole-in-the-wall. read more

Loved the experience and I have to say, there are not enough good reviews here about Ben, he was great! I told him I wanted to try long layers and side bangs and he got it so right. He understood exactly what I wanted and did just that. He even took time to style my new do with soft curls after sharing that I had a party to attend that evening. I look forward to going back. Lana is awesome. Really friendly and attentive. However, we had some communication problems and I ended up with a cut I didn't really like. And when I tried to ask a question about changing it a little I was assured that what she was doing would fit the bill. Not so much. I really think this is a place where you have to have a solid idea of what you want and maybe even a picture of it. Trying to work with her to find something that fit my vision didn't work quite right. I would totally suggest her to other friends who are more decisive than I. I've been here a couple times before and each time, an asian dude with awesome longish styled hair cut mine and did an AMAZING JOB. Best haircuts I've ever received. But last time I went, he wasn't there, and neither was the lady who's always there. In reading other reviews, it sounds like her name might be Lana, I don't know because I never get to know my hairdressers. I'm not terribly picky, so I just walk in and walk out if the price is right. So the last time I went, I got this new guy and he gave me a really crappy cut. Even as someone who's not picky, I refuse to go to him again. He seems to be the only one cutting right now and honestly, I think he's used to cutting men with short hair, like the exact same kind he has. After a year of not getting my hair cut and having horrible haircuts over the years (I have curly-Kinky hair), I decided to look up places to get a haircut and stumbled upon this place. I braved it out and went with my best friend for support. I was SO nervous. Lana (the owner and head hair miracle worker) talked to me about the shape I wanted and suggested a different style and length. My heart was POUNDING the entire time but I watched her technique (which is so fantastic) and my hair ended up looking PHENOMENAL. It is curling PERFECTLY and the shape suits my face. Maria, the woman who washed my hair was also awesome. They were both really really laid back ladies and very cool. It was really inexpensive for a hair cut this amazing. I have really thick, curly hair and she (not sure of her name but she said she is the only one there) was very patient and gave me exactly what I asked for. I got highlights and I trim and I love it. Very inexpensive too- $100, and for all the hair I have and the 2.5 hours it took, that is really cheap! She does take walk-ins but I would recommend making an appointment. Some people came in when she was working with me and because she can't stop highlights she was turning them away. read more

I love this place SO much - both me and my boyfriend get our haircut by Lana! I wound up finding her after the snooty Aveda salon across the street gave me trouble about cutting my bangs and have been going to Divas ever since. Lana is truly talented and so, so kind. You really get one-on-one attention and she remembers everyone and everything they like. Sometimes, when I need my bangs cut she even refuses to take money! So I just moved to NY from VA and the one thing I have dreaded was finding a new hairstylist (I went to the same person for 7 years). My hairstylist was not only great at giving me exactly what I wanted, but she was very inexpensive and very efficient. I would say other salons probably cost the same in VA as NY, so for me it was just a matter of searching to find someone like my old hairstylist. I decided to try out Diva with baby steps when my bangs were becoming way too long for me curl out with a round brush. She did a great job at trimming my hair, but she scared me in the beginning because she was taking so much time checking the length of my hair in all different directions. I also was a little concerned when she hadn't really cut my hair as much as I thought she would until I realized she was going to blow dry my hair first. She didn't chat very much in the beginning which I don't really mind, but it's kind of awkward and I was nervous about getting my hair cut for the first time by someone new. The fun part about this place was that they actually have a couple people working on you so you feel special. Two things I didn't like about my experience. 1. The woman who was washing my hair was very rough. I felt like she was squeezing the hair right off my head. And when she brushed it -- oh my god. It felt like she tore out my tangles. 2. When they were straightening my hair there was steam coming off. When I straighten my hair at home, this never happens so I think they had it on too high of a setting because I know my hair was dry at that point. I will probably come back here when I want my hair cut. I'm not sure how she does with pictures which is what I used to do with my old stylist. read more

When I first entered the salon, I was surprised that it was so tiny, although it was quaint. After all these raving reviews, I just imagined a larger salon with more people. There's only one sink to wash hair and three seats for people to get their hair cuts I called in to make an appointment for Lana. She was waiting for me when I entered and she was friendly from the very beginning. We talked for a little bit, I told her that I wanted to look more mature because I have an interview tomorrow. At first, I didn't understand why people were giving this salon such high ratings because she wasn't doing anything special. But then, after my hair cut, she went out of her way to curl my hair, 70's style, for my interview tomorrow. All the attention, detail, and going beyond just the simple hair cut was only $30.
