I've had $20 cuts better than the $100 I spent on someone ignoring my photos and going full Edward Scissorhands on my head. Screwing up people's hair for $100 then saying they have to pay $90 to fix it is a scam. Berating people's hair quality because they don't use your Aveda product is a scam. I did return for a touch up about a year later. It was right before my engagement photos were to be taken. I had so much confidence in Mike based on my previous visit (see original review). Unfortunately, the second appointment was very different. I had pretty much asked for the same thing and got something totally different. It ended up coming out very brassy and looked worse in certain lighting. I bit my tongue in the salon, hoping it was just the lighting. Mike showed me an after-photo and it looked tolerable. It wasn't until I went home that I saw it in different lighting and was very upset. I messaged Mike immediately to see what could be done. He offered that I return to the salon for a free touch-up. This has to be the tackiest and most unskilled place I've ever been to. They wash your hair in cold water that has no pressure. I had my haircut by Orinda. I should've known because her schedule is wide open every day even on weekends. That alone speaks volumes!!! She needs to go back to school to learn the art of cutting hair. She completely ruined the texture of my hair with thinning shears, while cutting it very uneven, and much shorter than I asked for. The left side is cut completely different from the right. There's a reason she's been working there for many yrs and still can't fill her schedule even on weekends!! I do not recommend!! Don't say I didn't warn ya! EDIT: In response to the owner. Went in for color, asked for similar to mine which is light brown with no red undertone, came out with black hair! Plus when I had called to schedule the appointment I was told it would be $90 and blow dry is included, they charged me $104 and didn't even dry my hair well with a towel. It pains me to write this as it is one person that made this experience not the entire salon** Quality service and holistic approach for well being?? I left this salon in tears as the stylist rolled her eyes because I was a walk in for a balayage, she looked me up and down, then sighed when I told her what I want, she printed out the price and kept asking is this okay is this okay like I couldn't afford to be there. Yet even with the hefty $440 she quoted me and the eye roll she continued to tell me loudly all over the salon that my hair was dry and I wouldn't get the results I wanted, she also said that my 5 greys wouldn't be covered because it's a balayage and I would need a color done. I'm sorry you can't color my 5 grey's and this is how much? $440? I was in the chair with the gown and everything on I was so embarrassed by the loudness and the unprofessionalism I asked to be excused. It was a mortifying experience, there was no one in a single chair when I asked to leave there where 4stylists sitting around, that was $500 that salon let walk out crying. This review is VERY long overdo. For a little backstory, I first moved to Astoria in July 2017 and found a salon on Yelp (not Gigi's but I don't want to name names) for highlights. They absolutely destroyed my hair. They looked like those chunky highlights from the early 2000s. I decided I was going to wait a few months for them to grow out and then try to get it fixed at another salon. While I was waiting for my hair to grow out a bit, I found Gigi's on Yelp and came in for a blowout. This was the first time I met Alis, and he was horrified by my chunky highlights. He told me to schedule an appointment with him and he would fix them for me. This was about a year and a half ago, and I've been getting my hair done by Alis ever since. He is SO good at what he does, and I really can't say enough good things about him. He has totally transformed my hair from ugly chunky highlights to beautifully blended balayage. He's definitely a perfectionist and takes his time and does not rush any part of the process. This may sound dramatic but I will never let anyone besides Alis ever touch my hair again. The rest of the staff at Gigi's are very attentive and have always been very kind to me. If you're looking for a new salon in Astoria, save yourself the trauma of a potential hair nightmare like I had and just go to Gigi's! read more

The backstory is that I've been dreading going to a salon for color treatments so much that I bought professional haircare and started doing fairly complicated stuff at home. Well, life intervened, I missed the window to fix my roots, and the next thing I knew I had six inches of medium brown growth with nearly platinum length and ends. It looked really wild. To make things worse, my ends were fairly damaged while my scalp was getting more dry and fragile by the day due to a brutal oral acne medication. I decided to get over my salon fears and see which local salons use Olaplex, the patented hair bond builder, thinking that it would be a good indicator of who is running a serious color operation. I came up with two near my apartment, followed them on Instagram for a few months, and eventually picked Gigi's because the work being posted looked polished, and I needed Work Hair for a business trip. I kicked off the project with a consult at the salon in August. I needed my future stylist to see what they were up against. There, I was introduced to Mike, who reviewed my inspiration photos and evaluated my hair. I walked in thinking I'd do some sort of balayage, but he explained that in order to get the super blonde bondeness I wanted, lots of highlights would be the best bet. I agreed to give it a go and booked an appointment for about a week later. He listed the treatments and amount of time needed, and the receptionist let me know the estimated cost based on those services (my eventual bill matched the estimate). I came back the next week and Mike got to work foiling my mop. I don't have much to say about the salon atmosphere and whatnot because that's not really something I pay attention to: they gave me some water and the shampoo was nice, but I'm mostly attuned to the skill of my stylist. In the course of a few hours, Mike broke up my half-foot roots and got them as blended with my solid platinum length and ends as possible (I had a full highlight, Olaplex treatment, tone, cut, and style) -- it was a fairly complicated color correction due to the length of the roots. After months of feeling like a sick person with bad hair, I finally felt like myself. After about three months, the color of my hair still looked great and my roots were coming in, but far more naturally than with all-over color. Rather than ending up with another root nightmare, I booked at the salon last week to touch things up. Mike and I decided that another full highlight would help blend my hair further. This session (full highlight, Olaplex, tone, hair trim and style) brought my hair all the way to IG hair-spiration territory. I'm kind of shocked (in a good way) that this is my hair! read more

I'm not going to lie- I was pretty nervous to get my hair cut and colored during COVID, despite salons reopening. My hair became so long, heavy, and uncomfortable, and my roots were out of control. I was able to get in to see Mike, who had previously taken care of my hair and done an excellent job right before my wedding! The salon is doing an excellent job taking precautions during COVID. You must sign a waiver, and they provide masks and sanitizer. Giant stuffed teddy bears are stationed throughout the salon to ensure social distancing. I felt extremely safe and comfortable, and was pleased to see that all staff members correctly wore their masks. Mike did a fantastic job on my hair, as usual! He was able to fix about 6 months of using box dye (thanks, quarantine), and was able to keep my length while making my hair feel healthy and light. Thank you so much! read more
