I've been looking for someone that KNOWS and that is well TRAINED in managing hair. Carmen has always been that person, she is well trained and is constantly taking seminars to improve her hair stylish techniques. She brings out the beauty that we have inside out. Carmen is always sharp willing to suggestions and ideas and she also bring her experience to the table. Initially when I heard of this place, I read great reviews for Divas Hair Studio and was excited to get the ombré hairstyle I had been dreaming about for years. So, I booked an appointment, and when I arrived to my appointment I had to wait 40 minutes. Later, I realized I Should have ran when I had the chance. I showed Carmen how I would like my hair to look, and she said that was something she could definitely attain. I had very healthy long brown hair (rarely have died my hair). So we started, and to my surprise, my scalp was uncomfortably hot during the bleaching process. I had never bleached my hair and didn't really know what to expect. I made mention to Carmen, she said I should be fine. I sat there uncomfortably... a couple minutes later my hair was on smoke (not exaggerating), we ran and washed my hair. I was devastated, (she blamed it on my hair shampoo). After rinsing my hair she began to untangle my hair. I sat their trying to keep my calm as a watched my hair fall off onto the brush and onto the ground. If you ask me, I don't know why I let her continue. She did my hair, and It turned out ash (she said), then she put a temporary hair dye that dyed my hair RED and after dying it she bleached it more. I was so confused with her process but was trusting her. She finished my hair and my hair was a bright red with blonde on the bottom. Clearly not anything remotely close to what I had asked for, I had asked her to keep my hair dark brown and to make the bottom a Carmelly brown. She asked me how I thought it looked, I said my hair was red and she insisted it was a chocolate brown and she expected that I would pay her. I went to another stylist to fix my hair, she did her best to fix it, unfortunately my hair was so thin and brittle from when Carmen bleached my hair that I had to cut 7 inches. Just came here one time. My friend normally gets his hair cut here so I decided to try it out. I felt like my hair cut was rushed. I felt like my hair was uneven but I didn't say anything. The lady was nice and I am not one to confront unless I am extremely angry. For $20 I don't expect much. Well when I got home I decided to straighten my hair. I have to see my hair straight to see how the style is. All she did was blow dry my hair at the salon. Well after I straightened my hair I saw the left side was longer than the right. I don't think it is that difficult to make sure that you style a customer's hair and make sure everything is even. I didn't feel like going back there to get it fixed. I went to my usual haircut place. I don't think i'll ever go back. 2 stars because she did a good job on my friend's hair but he is a guy so it is easier. read more

I had always wanted Red hair. Never was I able to find a stylist that would take me to Red until I met Rahmiro at Divas. I went in for a cut and started telling him about needing a make over and how I had never had a stylist that would give me what I wanted. We set up an appt, and the rest was history. Finally, found a hair salon after 4 weeks of searching. Carmen is very sweet and personable. This was my first time here and it felt like I was back home. I just relocated from NJ/NYC area and the expectations were high when it came to hair salons. I needed to feel like I was back home getting my hair done and that's exactly what it was.... Back round: I recently relocated to San Diego from the east coast where Dominican blow outs reign supreme and for only $20. I desperately was in need of a stylist here and took to trusty Yelp. I quickly have realized Yelp is much more helpful and accurate on the East Coast...but I digress. I called Carmen around noon and she happened to be available around 3 the same day so I took the appointment. Her salon is about one hour from where I live but I didn't mind. Upon arrival I waited about thirty minutes to be seen...whatever. She washed my hair well and knew how to put rollers in correctly, so far so good. I sat in the most uncomfortable chair, in the most awkward position for about one hour under the dryer. I knew from experience that the dryer wasn't hot enough, when she took me from under the dryer I knew my hair would still be damp, and it was. Carmen then started blow drying my hair and not allowing me to look in the mirror (she positioned the chair in a way where I couldn't see the mirror or the product(s) she was putting in my hair). I asked to see what she was doing and realized she was putting Vaseline in my hair!!!!!!!! GROSS! Not to mention my hair gets super oily quickly on its own. After she finished blow drying my hair it looked like a big poof. Thank God she applied the flat iron to my hair to calm it down. It looked okay but I was skill mad about the Vaseline. The cost was $65!!!!! Outrageous. I asked Carmen about her "resume" and clientele etc. She let me know she usually only does "straight or wavy/fine Mexican women's hair", this is primarily due to the demographic. So she really doesn't know how to do a Dominican blow out unless your hair has Keratin in it or is relaxed- no thanks. This review is has nothing to do with Carmen's service as I did not get a chance to have her do a dominican blow out for me. I called her today (08/20/13) informing her that she had great reviews online and I was interested in getting a blowout. I told her I was natural and she then proceeded to tell me that she no longer will do kinky hair. She says that will will only do a blowout on naturally curly or loosely curled hair. Said that if my hair was natural and not naturally curly like biracial hair then she would not be able to do it. So there goes that. Again another indicator that being Black in San Diego sucks ass. No food, no hair services, no diversity. So if you are a natural woman and are looking for a blowout please look else where (possibly LA) as Carmen is not able to do it. read more

So I read the comment below and must clarify! I've been coming to Carmen regularly (I'm black and have a relaxer) and she's always extremely nice and does a great job with my hair!! I get wash/set with a blow. Carmen has been doing hair for a really long time and blowing out hair has taken its toll on her so she does not prefer to do hair that is very tightly coiled. She does do natural hair but if your curl type is kinky she may recommend certain straightening treatments THEN proceed to do your hair if the two of you come up with something. She takes really good care of my hair and we plan to began keratin treatments soon. Carmen really cares about hair and making it healthy and beautiful but she also cares about her health!! Would you continue to do things that you know will only hurt you, especially if you don't charge too much for your services? Long story short, Carmen does natural hair but you have to come up with a plan and treatment with her if your hair is very tightly coiled. read more

Been back twice and always the same service. Full color/style/cut every time I go and I have not at all been dissatisfied. Roger seems to have a great talent for layers and styling them to make you look like a true diva! Carmen even calls me a day later to see if I am happy. read more

I absolutely love how Roger did my hair!!! He is very straight forward and will give you his expertise opinion. I have very curly hair and have had bad experiences with other salons that don't know how to cut it, but Roger did the works in my hair from dying it cutting it and styling it.Overall I had a great outcome and couldn't be happier!!! read more

Roger! Roger! Roger! Many reasons why I would give roger 10 stars but I can only do 5. 6months ago I switched to roger from an aveda salon and haven't looked back. Roger has a wholesome approach to hair care. He always keeps integrity of hair and does what is healthiest and best for your mane. I love that I can just text him for an appointment without going thru an annoying front desk girl like larger salons. He gives me honest feedback, without trying to upsell me on services/ products. He always goes above and beyond for his clients. Salon is an easy going casual atmosphere. I just moved from ny to san diego and I needed a relaxer on my hair carmen did it just as good as ny salons and I really love it. The only bad thing is I wish we could be closer so i can have my wash and set done ones a week but is a 40 minutes drive for me :( but is definitely worth it... maybe not every weekend but sometimes..... read more

Carmen Bido, owner of Diva Hair Studio is an excellent hair stylist along with taking care of her shop being clean, friendly, and always willing to make her customers happy. I've been a customer for 12 years and she is by far the best in the county. Her products are exceptionally update and she 's knowledgeable on how to treat damage hair, curly hair, fine hair, long and short hair, African American hair and when you leave you feel good, like a million dollar baby ready to walk proud. Hey ladies, this is the place to go if you're looking for a Dominican Hair Salon! I'm from New Jersey/NY area and if anyone knows about east coast, its that most of us get our hair done by Dominicans and get a wash &set with a blow out. I'm African American and I've been in San Diego for about 6 months and have been going crazy looking for a place that does that and the closest places nearby are in LA - too far for me. I was about to give up and just get braids or something but I finally got the courage to give this place a shot after reading Taisha B.'s review below and she was not wrong! The price is higher than east coast but isn't everything here in Cali lol. It's around the average price to get your hair done in Cali. Won't break the bank though. Carmen is amazing!! My hair was horrible and damaged and everything. She gave me a wash & set and blow out and also an AWESOME hair cut!! I've gotten sooo many compliments on it! She is terrific! Okey dokey so I just left the salon. I'm an African American woman with relaxed hair and I'm very pleased. I called this morning and scheduled an appointment the same day. Carmen was super nice and professional. I too am from NYC and use to 20$ wash and sets lol. But I'm far from home my wash set and deep condition came out to 50 bucks . Being the only Dominican hair salon for miles I'm not mad at her for the price lol. Everything in Cali is an arm and a leg. I'm very pleased with the results my hair is soft and straight after the blow dry straightening . I'm def going back . Oh! I also asked her if she can do natural hair and she explained that she can but she rather take those clients during the week because it takes a long time to comb through and prep that kind of hair which I though was understandable. Carmen the owner and lead hairstylist was fantastic! She returned my intial phone call and put me in her schedule the next day! She is mindful of not overbooking her clients. I was so pleased to hear that. She informs you of the products she is using and explains the benefits. I really appreciated that. Carmen has a steamer in her salon for deeper penetration for conditioning treatments which I loved! Her roller set was very precise and she straightened my hair after the blowout to get the roots. She trimmed my hair perfectly and my husband looves my hair. I do too and I will definitely go back! Parking was right near tthe salon and it was super easy to find. Please go see Carmen. First I want to say that Carmen is very nice & pleasant. In August I was on vacation at La Jolla. Original from NY I was in search of a Dominican hair dresser. I made an appt with Carmen. I have naturally curly hair but it's long (about midway of my back). I wanted rollers, & my ends cut. I was the only client there during my time, I arrived about 11 & was done about 330, which for me is a very long time for just a wash, set & cut. I wasn't satisfied with my hair cut, I wanted my ends trimmed & b/c my hair is long layers Carmen appeared hesitant to cut the ends. I've been to other salons & it has never been a problem cutting my ends. The end result was that my ends still looked bad & I still need to cut them. Like I originally said, Carmen is very nice but it wasn't the service I was expecting. I also found the pricing on the expensive side. read more

JJbad S. like myself, is an African American woman who takes pride in the ability to wear her natural hair texture. From time to time WE would like to take advantage of the versatility of our natural hair and have it professionally (temporarily) straightened. WHICH Carmen has made clear that she is refusing to provide THAT service to those woman who have naturally KINKY hair. YOU are RELAXED! YOU do NOTt have a full head of kinky curly hair! YOU have chemically altered YOUR natural hair. SURE Carmen is nice and will not turn potential clients away JUST because they are black. BUT, she is refusing to provide specific services to CERTAIN women with CERTAIN hair textures. You say, "Carmen does natural hair but you have to come up with a plan and treatment with her if your hair is very tightly coiled." But if my hair is tightly coiled and the treatment I want on my hair is a basic roller set and blow out and she says "NO" then that is not working with the client. I don't want chemicals in my head, I don't want to spend ANY money on a protein treatment. THAT is not what I'm requesting. I am requesting a blow out and Carmen will either choose to do it or not and she has declined. This is her right. No one is knocking her for it. The purpose of the review by JJbad S. was to let other kinky hair women know that Carmen at Diva's Hair Studio has decided to no longer work with a full head of naturally kinky hair textures NOT BLACK PEOPLE but just the ones who have naturally kinky hair and wear their hair in its natural state majority of the time.
