We weren't in a position to scrutinize every detail. There was no written contract, no permits, no termination date, no progressive payment schedule, and not a single change order the entire project. No one ever honestly disclosed they were going over budget. The original quote was $320,000 -- fully covered by my wife's inheritance. In the final two months, we asked in writing for a cost-to-complete figure and were told $146,000. We were then billed roughly double that, with no change in scope, no warning, nothing in writing, no permission. When we pushed back, their client sued us for $120,000 more. They are now suing us for $240,000. This firm's attorney was openly hostile throughout -- belittling my wife, questioning our integrity, and repeatedly calling us liars and con artists, all while representing a client who couldn't explain their own billing. When questioned in court, they put their office manager on the stand to justify the numbers.
