I am extremely disappointed with my experience with this personal injury law firm. For six months, I waited and never received a phone call or had the opportunity to speak directly with an attorney about my case. Then, without any meaningful communication or discussion, I received an email stating that they were dropping my case because it was not financially worthwhile for them. I understand that not every case is a fit for every firm, but I expected at the very least the courtesy of a phone call and a conversation with an attorney before a decision was made. After six months of waiting, receiving a brief email instead of a personal explanation felt dismissive and unprofessional. I waited months and told them every detail of my case top to bottom. After all the time waiting they send me to a specialist which is an hour away taking off work to be there to only realize my case is a lost cause. After dealing with four different people and texts I ask what's going on with everything and finally get a response. Hey we have to see if your previous employer had insurance and I'm just beside myself explaining all of these things to them during intake. Then I receive a call yesterday stating hey we're gonna partner with another law firm and have you talk to them to see what they say! Today I anticipate this phone call to only be told that I've been dropped from DJ C Law. They have referred me to a different lawyer and they don't have any information about any of my case and DC Law disregarded my three messages over the past three weeks, asking if they had dropped me as a client to only be sneaky and pass me off as a referral in which I have to gather all my information all over again as if I never started my case. Thank you DJC Law & Bertha! Even if you do have a good case, please pass on this company as they have no empathy or common courtesy to tell you straight up that we can't help you! These guys are dishonest. My dad was an attorney, I have numerous friends who are attorneys, and since my accident and hiring DC law, have talked to family friends who do injury law. If you want to hear the verbal tape of me communicating my settlement with them getting told to hurry and sign the digital paperwork so I could get paid without discussing that my payout would be half the amount for me and less than that for my daughter than what was just discussed. A week later when I was surprised that my payout was 60% of what we had discussed the week before, and it was supposed to be even more than that. They then avoided telling me my daughter settlement was half of mine as well. These guys are either completely incompetent, and dangerously so if you have family concerns or safety or longevity of injury, recovery, and your focus, or there are completely crooked, dishonest, and pray on people who have been injured and expect integrity from an attorney. It's disconcerting and such a disappointment when a law firm like DC Law doesn't honor the word of their own attorney and knowingly take advantage of a client that doesn't understands and speaks very limited English. My mother's first attorney (she went through 3 attorneys throughout her case) stated that we wouldn't be charged for a 15 minute phone conversation with a translator, but the final invoice stated otherwise with a $480 translator charge even though I acted as a translator for the duration of the case. When asked about said charge, DC Law was indifferent and made no attempts to explain the surcharge nor the additional $1,000 fees. I had a sure thing very cut and dry personal injury case. DC Law accepted my case, which was a no brainer, and then passed off my case to a different law firm without my consent. and then that went black, crickets. Then that lawyer/ firm just let it Peter out, no follow up from anyone, I sent a million messages and phone calls, never heard back. And when I googled they seem to be out of business? I had a terrible experience and wouldn't recommend this firm to anyone. They contacted me after I was a passenger in a hit and run. They hard-sold me into reluctantly signing a contract after texting and calling repeatedly every day. That's on me. They told me I needed to go see a doctor that they have a pre-arranged relationship with, even though I have my own doctor I've been with for years and who I had already seen after the accident (who didn't recommend physical therapy or any further treatment). DC Law said they wouldn't be able to make a case if I didn't go to their doctor. The doctor's office tried to get me to start physical therapy and chiropractic treatment WITHOUT SEEING THE DOCTOR FIRST, which of course I refused. I went to the clinic and it was absolutely appalling - overcrowded, dirty, everyone in a single cramped room, chaotic and just shady as hell. Worse than the worst urgent care I've ever seen in my life. I left and told the paralegal or whoever he was that I refused to see their doctor - that it was unsafe to be treated without evaluation, and the clinic was horrible - and again they said they might not be able to make a case for a settlement if I didn't. I decided to just close the case because I felt pressured to get unnecessary and potentially dangerous medical treatment. My injuries weren't severe, I was already treated by my own doctor, and it wasn't my car that was in the accident. I just had a few medical bills that needed reimbursement I called to tell them to close my case and talked to the attorney, Robert Ranco, for the first time (up until then I had only spoken with attorneys and paralegals). He said I needed to send him an email with the words "I no longer wish to pursue this matter" to close the case, so I did. When I contacted the insurance company to get my bills reimbursed, they told me that DC Law had a lien on the case for one third of any money paid to me. Apparently, that was in the contract. (Look - I get it, I signed the contract. But contracts are hard to understand and when I went over it with the paralegals this was definitely not made clear. I never would have signed if I had understood this.) Further, the lien on my case means that Progressive now treats my case as "contested" - so they won't pay out anything unless I sue them. So now, because of DC Law, I can't get a couple hundred dollars worth of medical bills reimbursed. I tried to get DC Law to release the lien - they refused. Mr. Ranco was horribly rude and called me a liar for having said that "I no longer want to pursue this matter," even though he was the one who told me to use those words in the email. I wish I had never taken their calls. Unless you have no other options for getting medical treatment, avoid this firm. This company deserves 0 stars, and I highly believe that if you are ever in need of a personal injury attorney you look somewhere else, because this company will try to get you for the money that they supposedly win for you. Guilherme (Carlos) Vasconcelos is the worst attorney I have ever met, and he uses his accent to confuse you, moreover I believe he is very untrustworthy. He has been on our case for over two years, and his credentials say that he has a Masters in Law. Well he does not seem that educated because when we spoke to him he made zero sense, and Guilherme(Carlos) We asked for an email to express our grievances and the only thing Mr. Vasconcelos did was bring in another attorney by the name of Jessica Yaeger; and Ms. Yaeger said she was the Office Manager, however when we first saw her she offered no welcome nor did she smile, furthermore she did not offer an apology for the fact the we have waited over 2 years to get this case resolved. When I tried to ask questions and speak to Ms. Jessica Yaeger she simply spoke over me so I would not have a chance to ask my questions about the case , and then she got up and left the room. To make a long story short DC Law is trying to say that the money that was won for us in litigation is going for a large hospital of about 10,000(this hospital bill is for a different injury than what we went to case for.) When I tried to explain this to the two attorneys they made it so confusing that we would not understand, and I believe they do this so that they can keep the funds for themselves. Be careful with DC Law because they will try to say you owe money to the hospital but then DC Law Keeps that money for their own pockets. read more

tl;dr - DC Law is just okay and at least they stuck with me through to the end. Attorney Cassandra Charles is top notch. Honorable mentions go to paralegals Karin Murphy and Ingrid Barrios. --- I signed on with DC Law after my first firm decided to drop my case because they realized they would have to do work and not get a huge settlement for the guy who ran a red light and totaled my car. I was not grievously injured because it was not a horrible wreck, but it did make my neuromuscular disorder flare-up, requiring treatment. DC Law took me on contingency even though I was up-front that it would require some real work and wouldn't result in a huge settlement. They paid for my therapy upfront with a LOP, so that I could get treated and later pay the fees for that out of my eventual settlement. The other driver was in a rental car and had opted to use Enterprise's corporate insurance, so this case was a 3-year-long personal hell that absolutely was harder and more fraught than it would've been against a non-commercial personal liability insurance company. This was all further aggravated by the fact that my neurologists lost a lot of my records when they moved offices while DC Law was handling my claim. I didn't get a huge settlement, not even enough to cover all of my losses (only about 60%) when one includes the price of having to buy a new (used) car to replace my totaled vehicle. But it was settled before depositions happened, which meant I ended up with more than I would have if court costs had started to pile on because my claim was not ever going to be a huge one considering that all of my injuries were soft-tissue problems related to my pre-existing neuromuscular disorder. My experience with DC Law wasn't wholly wonderful. Once I called to get updates because I wasn't hearing anything, only to learn that the lawyer that had initially taken my case was no longer there and the new lawyer for me was not enthusiastic that they could win my case. Once, a new lawyer called me to introduce themselves because my previous lawyer wasn't at the forefront any more (but she, Cassandra, was at least still with the firm and on my case; she was the only lawyer who contacted me after that, probably to avoid any repeat upsets), and he misnamed me (but he did call and apologize once I contacted Karin Murphy, one of the paralegals on my case, directly to find out what was going on). My paralegal contact kept changing as well, but sometimes for the better, as when Ingrid Barrios and Karin Murphy started contacting me. Once things really started rolling with my case, Cassandra was my primary lawyer again and she's just the best ever when it comes to negotiating settlements. While my overall experience with DC Law was a veritable 3-year-long roller coaster, Cassandra made this review favorable for the entire firm. She clearly communicates and explains things without talking down, is realistic and reasonable in her expectations and promises, and displays a friendly demeanor that still makes it clear that she won't tolerate any disrespect or game-playing from anyone (which is necessary in a lawyer, really; being strong is a basic requirement, but also having a friendly resting state is a breath of fresh air). She never promised anything she didn't deliver and did her best to get the most that she could, considering the complications posed by a lack of witnesses and the incompetence of the investigating peace officer on-scene at the site of the wreck. I wasn't particularly impressed and was often frustrated by DC Law's lack of communication and transparency (given that they moved while on my case and the turnover of previous lawyers - all told, I had 2 lawyers at DC Law before Cassandra and 4 total on my case over 3 years) and probably would've only given DC Law 2.5 to 3 stars instead of 4 if not for Cassandra's excellence. Honestly, I'd give 4.5 stars if I could. On a personal level, Cassandra didn't bat an eye at any of my marginalized identities: mobility challenged, non-binary, consensually non-monogamous but demisexual, queer, and neurodivergent. She is compassionate, understanding, and patient. If I ever need a lawyer again (and I hope I don't), I will want her, no matter which firm she is at. It's 2019- And I'm definitely in a better place than I was 6 months ago- thanks to the DC Law firm! Last year I suffered permanent injuries in an accident, temporarily unable to work & stuck with a pile of bills and a totaled car due to the negligence of another driver.
