I've been to a lot of DMVs, in NC and other states. I have never had one that operated efficiently. Notmallt, a DMV visit is an all-day affair, and the ppl are rude and irate. Today, tho, we came to get my daughters license, and we got here at 8:11, and she was driving by 8:35. The staff were nice and accommodating. Was an actual good experience,.... at a DMV,.....for the first time ever. Gonna come here from now on. HP DMV and Thomasville DMVs are miserable places that take all day. read more

This location in particular does have a few employees that are friendly and actually care about what situation you have going on. Was a bit irritated though that some employees here aren't the nicest. I unfortunately was charged a hefty fee because an employee didn't do her job correctly. On Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 they did not use the QR code/digital queue system. They started taking people from the walk-in line at 11 am. Just a few at a time could go inside to stand in line so you are left outside for over two hours depending on when you join the line. I spent a few hours yesterday getting my Real ID and I have to say the staff there were amazing. They were given the task of keeping the long line moving (a gathering of customers that stretched around the front of the building!) and maintaining order by checking to make sure we had all of the necessary paperwork as we approached the door. In charge of this process was a clipboard-carrying woman who was armed with the "rules" and great people skills. All sprinkled with a quick wit. Let me say that the staff (once I was ushered into my final destination) were friendly and so gracious after putting in non-stop hours on a Saturday. The epitome of both inefficiency and ineptitude! None of those who implemented the process of getting a "Real" ID could make a living outside of a government agency as there is ZERO accommodation/logic! Was told to make an appointment on line with this result repetitively: "We're sorry, we don't have availability at this moment." The process is so lame I will go back again for my 5th effort. I don't know who is responsible but rest assured, they were made to wear a "dunce" hat when they were in grammar school. Only those with no talent, no initiative and NO interest in customer service work at DMV. For the Kernersville, NC office, try this: send a text message to "31289" with "U135 Get In Line". This will trigger the 1-5 menu, you can choose your option (ie reply text with ONE number, get a ticket number assigned, and wait nearby or in your car.) read more

BEST DMV EXPERIENCE EVER...I went to the Kernersville DMV to renew my license. I had very low expectations of what my experience would be especially since it was the day after a federal holiday. I was unable to make an appointment on line as the option to do that wasn't available. I arrived at 7:55am and the doors were already open with several people (around 8 people) already waiting inside. There was a QR code to scan to check in when you entered. I sat down and after about 30 minutes my number was called. I went back to line 5 and was greeted by a very friendly person. She made small talk and made me feel comfortable. She even wished me a happy birthday. The renewal with Real ID added took a total of 15 minutes and then I was out the door. Total time from arrival to leaving was 45 minutes. After hearing horror stories about the DMV wait times and reading all the negative feedback on yelp about this specific location, I expected to be there all day. This was the total opposite experience. One of my best experiences at any DMV ever. Even as I was leaving there were less than 15-20 people waiting. read more

I showed up about 45 minutes before they opened and there where at least 25 people already in line. I figured I would be there for hours. They opened up at 8am and started letting people in. I was one of the lucky ones who got in before the place filled up. The process was very smooth with everyone working there being very helpful and quick. They where short two people but made it work. I'm very surprised in how everything went. My words of advice is to have all your paperwork in order and ready and it will make your visit here so much better. read more

This dmv deserves the lowest possible star. These 2 employees realllllly fucked me over. I went to get my permit test and I passed and he gave me an ID and said heres your permit so I took it, and did an adult driving log for 60 hours and I had my permit for 90 days. I go in to get the waived drivers license test, the lady helping me was so rude and disrespectful it was surprising. I'm not a rude person but this experience has brought out the worse in me. She says it's an ID not a permit and the guy who gave me the ID instead of a permit was like "oh I remember you" and even in there computer and said I had a damn permit test and I passed.. but for some reason I had to re- take a permit test because I had an ID that the damn dmv employee gave me.. I failed the permit test that I took right then and there because I didn't get a chance to review the book, so I was beyond pissed. So I go up to the counter and the girl Then told me to come in next Thursday to retake it.. I took time out of my school time and now I have to make this time up because an employee fucked up... I ask"do I have to do 60 hour driving log again and have it for 90 days again"? And of course he said "yep you have to do it again"... I'm so mad at the fact that it's not even my fault it's their fault. It's like the hardest thing to get a damn license at this dmv, I'm not trying anymore. This is honestly a joke. I went to do an address change and the door was locked, in the afternoon. I pressed the intercom and told the lady I wanted to do an address change. Went to get new plates. There was a line with about 10 customers ahead. Line went super fast only stood there for a good 3 minutes. Everything from walking in to check out was a breeze. The ladies here are disgustingly rude . Their manner and way of presentation . It's poor customer service in this area . I came in for my road test . I didn't understand the situation of having to have my own liability insurance due to the fact of being in a new state . I asked her to reexplain and a blonde lady with glasses told me NO, so another lady explained with high tone and attitude . They told my aunt to get out in the rudest way because she wanted to understand what I needed aside from me being a new adult and still learning they weren't helpful nor encouraging. Wow what a train wreck. Come here if you have nothing to do all day. Service is slow, tooooooo slow. The workers take their time shuffling their important paperwork, and you're just an afterthought. It's also really quiet, even if there's 80 people packed in the little room, so bring your headphones with you, don't forget to have your phone at full charge. read more

Horrible customer service!!! I got there at 4:20pm and the door was locked. I rang the bell, but no one answered. The website said they were open until 5pm, so I rang the bell a few more times. A women finally answers and asks "what do I need?". I explained I needed an ID for my son for a class trip he's going on. She wanted to know when his class trip was and I said this weekend and she proceeds to tell me that I'll need to come back in the morning. I told her that the website says they were open until 5pm, but she says they close at 4:30pm in preparation of leaving at 5pm. If this is truly the case, they should change their hours online to read 8am-4:30pm. Not to mention it was 4:20pm when she's telling me this "stuff". I'd recommend going elsewhere, but honestly that's probably what they'd like. They probably get paid by the hour whether or not they're taking care of customers. This DMV will surprise you in the best possible way! If you get the privilege and honor of interacting with Mr. Pitts, then consider yourself served by the BEST. Our oldest daughter did her driving test w/ him and he was so patient and compassionate. It was a really busy morning with lots of walk-ins like us and to compound the busyness, the main DMV office double-booked appointments. The staff handled the influx the best they could with a smile and positive attitude. There were a couple of people who walked in with a stereotypical mindset of a DMV office and tried complaining loudly of their 10 min wait - hello some of us were going into hour 2 and had been there since it opened - but Mr. Pitts handled them with class, dignity and a dose of reality to bring the situation back to a respectable place. If you visit this DMV, or any for that matter, do us all a favor by leaving attitudes at the door, follow the obvious instructions (get in line to see the front desk person and get a number) and allow the staff to do their job.
