The other day I was running late for a dinner party (TYPICAL), and swung into Bread Barn to pick up the necessary sweets I promised I would bring. I chose a small apple tart, a small caramel cake with cream cheese frosting and a small chocolate cake with some sort of thick buttercream on the top. For only $12 for all 3, I was out the door and off to my friend's place. After the meal, I split the little treats up into bit sized pieces and arranged them on a platter. There were 6 adults, and I would say the 3 cakes/tarts were WELL enough. We found the two cakes to be a little dense and dry. Who wants to guess how long they might have been hanging out in that pastry case?? The apple tart, however, was sweet and cinnamon-y and quite nice indeed. I might have had more success with the cakes if I could have lubed them up with some ice cream. But hey, can't win 'em all.

There are croissants and bread rolls, too. Some of the items however, did look like they had been out on display a bit too long. Most everything in this bakery café is affordable, from the $4 cakes to the $3 coffee. The coffee here is really good. The bread is actually quite good, but I did find it expensive. The loaf that I brought home had the great artisan flavor that is present in all rustic and homemade breads. The people that work here are extremely friendly and great at recommending the freshest of today's selections.

Another thing that struck my fancy was a custard croissant they had surprisingly with no almonds sprinkled on top of it haha.. that's the standard these days for some reason. Almonds aren't kind to me so that was obe pastry i haven't had in ages so i scoffed that down to .. so good aswell :D!! They got heaps more of greek pastrys and cookies :), I asked if they do coffee which they inclined but they said only strong Greek coffee in those "Copper Coffee Pot" :). So if you can't handle strong coffee you can always get your flat white, Soy latte etc across or down the road :) Its open till late daily and is a local favourite since the old days :)! We proceeded to spend about 20 minutes ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the enormous selection of delectable-looking cakes, breads, Greek pastries and biscuits, trying to not buy one of everything. The ladies behind the counter were patient with our indecision and unfamiliarity with Greek sweets, but efficient when we finally made our decisions. As tempting as the Mars bar mousse cake and caramel ricotta cake looked, I had to go for the traditional Greek sweets - it is the Hellenic Bakery after all! The galaktoboureko was oh-so-smooth and their lady fingers had the right balance of bitter nuts to syrup. I'll have to return to try the rest.

Inside there is gourmet groceries (which I love), a gelato stand, fresh rolls and lots of delicious Italian pastries. The ladies are so lovely and helpful and you can watch them make the pastries through a large window. I think the best cannoli I have ever tasted!!! Loved loved loved this place
