A trip to the dog park guarantees that your pups leave tired and happy. I like that this is in the Carlyle area because it's completely fenced, so many people bring their dogs here from around the neighborhood, and are really nice for the most part. You don't have to live in the Carlyle area to use this park! Also a tip, Mill Rd. turns into Andrews Ln.--once you see the Residence Inn Marriott on your left and the Carlyle Towers on your right, keep going down that road! I wouldn't recommend using the water fountains (though they rarely work) because there's always something funky in the bowl there. So bring your own water! I agree with other reviews, the pebble gravel in the small dog area is pretty bad and I'm sure it can be difficult to maneuver for some. There are a few parking spaces but they are shared with the tennis courts that are right next to the dog park. My dog has had a few good experiences here, mostly in the small dog park area. We tried out the bigger dog area the first few times and it did not work out for him because a lot of the larger dogs liked to gang up on him. That isn't the park's fault. Just like every other dog park, we should always be aware of our dogs' safety and happiness. read more

I loved taking my dog here for a few months. Recently, there have been a few aggressive dogs going and unfortunately, my dog got attacked. Owner took five minutes to walk across the park and pull her dog off mine. Aside from that, the park is a pretty good off leash dog park when the owners with smaller pups aren't making you feel bad for bringing a big pup. read more

This is the closest public dog park to my condo community (I live right next to the Huntington metro) so I come here all the time with my corgi! He loves this place and has made many doggy friends. The City has made some updates to the park in the last two years - I noticed that they cut down most of the trees so there are no plant overgrowth issues, and I believe the water fountains work properly now. I think they are still doing some construction as last time I went I noticed some construction fencing around the boundaries of the park. Do note that the fountains are turned off in the winter to prevent the pipes from bursting, so bring your own water in the colder months. I've used the stainless steel bowls lying around the park for my dog to drink from, and he hasn't shown any ill effects so far. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are two fenced areas - one with a gravel-filled "play box" that's probably meant for small dogs and a very large grassy/dirt area that's likely meant for large dogs. I don't believe there is any signage clearly indicating that one side is meant for small dogs and one is for large dogs (my corgi is in between so we switch depending on what dogs are in each enclosure anyways), but owners typically adhere to this assumption depending on what dogs are at the park (i.e. if there are no small dogs in the park, some big dog owners with shy or reactive dogs will use the smaller enclosure). There are several benches and trash cans located in both enclosures, but no complimentary poop bags (as in Shirlington Dog Park). This dog park is located right next to a railroad track and there are VERY LOUD noises when the trains go by every 15 minutes or so. Do not bring your dog here if he/she is afraid of loud noises! There are parking meters here and a decent amount of parking, but I've never actually paid the meters when I come (even when I've been here for 2+ hours). Other park patrons have also remarked that they've never paid the meters while parking. Utilize this advice at your own risk! There's also a fenced tennis court next to this dog park, should you want to play tennis! I've also seen people occasionally bring their unvaccinated puppies to the tennis court (when it's empty) so that the pups can become more comfortable around large numbers of dogs without a high risk of disease exposure. read more

I like this dog park, it's huge! Lots of room for the dogs to play. I don't own a dog but i usually come here with my friend as she has a pit bull. It's great to walk around here and relax on a beautiful day and watch all the breeds have fun together. As summer is around the corner, i will be coming here pretty often. All the dog owners that come here are pretty friendly. The park could use a bit of maintenance and clean up but overall it's pretty decent. Though your dog will get dirty after they play here so come prepared before they make a mess in your car. As the parking is very limited, we usually walk to the dog park since it's close by. The park is fully fenced so you can let the wind run through your dogs hair without a worry. It has a very nice water fountain for the dogs to play, have fun and get dirty. read more

This amazing dog park is tucked behind the Marriott Residence Inn on Mill Road, and behind Carlyle Towers by the Metro tracks. After being open prematurely in 2009, it closed for a while because it the city had yet to approve it. It was a sad time for dog lovers everywhere. Luckily, it recently opened just in time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather! This charming little off-leash dog park is in a nice, safe area of Alexandria. It consists of two fenced areas. One larger, grassy area and one smaller area with gravel. The areas are supposed to be separate for large dogs and small dogs. This is probably my only problem with this place. Who's bright idea was it to cover the ground of the small dog area with gravel? It's discrimination! Fortunately, everyone usually lets their dogs run around in the bigger area without any complaints. This place is wonderful! There are plenty of benches and large rocks for sitting, a nice path around the park to walk around, and plenty of balls and toys scattered around for public use. There are water fountains for people, and cute ground-level water fountains for the doggies to quench their thirst as well! Sadly, they are not always working, so you might want to bring some water just in case! Other owners are nice about sharing water and dog bowls. Doggie bags are kind of scarce. Usually, you can find some hanging on the fence, but I'd bring some extras just in case. Everybody you'll meet is nice and friendly and you'll find happy and friendly dogs everywhere of all shapes and sizes. There aren't any lights, so pretty much everyone leaves at sunset. Parking spots are minimal, but there usually isn't a problem finding an empty one. A lot of owners and their dogs walk their dogs out there anyways. Be sure to keep your dog happy and healthy and take them here often. They'll love you and behave better at home :-) read more

After their first experience at Carlyle, my dogs slept for about two days. Needless to say they had a BLAST. My favorite part about the park is that it's completely enclosed but with lots of room for pups to run, so you can let them have at it without worrying about them running off into traffic (one of my dogs is a big runner so this is always a concern for me!) My second favorite part is that all dogs and their owners are super friendly. Me AND my dogs made friends hehe. One note is that the doggie water fountains aren't always full, so definitely bring your own water on hot days. The fact that this place has doggie water fountains in the first place, however, is terrific. My dogs love this place so much that once we take the turn onto Andrew's Lane, they start getting super excited because they know where we're going! Warning: you better walk here because parking is limited. That said, primarily convenient to locals with dogs. They have the park separated into two parts: a larger space for big dogs (I assume) and a smaller space for small dogs. I'm not sure why one has mulch on the ground and the other has gravel. When you enter the larger park there are dog bowls that people fill with water. The water fountain doesn't seem to work. I'd advise bringing some water for your pup on the hotter days. There are several benches and some shade under the trees on the perimeter, which I am so grateful for when the sun is blazing. We were in the process of moving and were staying at the Residence Inn. This place is convenient to bring our two Corgis. Unfortunately one side is closed off so we have to be careful when there are larger dogs around. The other day someone brought in two 80 lb pit bulls and one of them attacked our Corgi. The pit bulls were not fixed. I do not believe in banning breeds from any situation but if your dog is a male, not fixed, and has a reputation for fighting, why bring them to the dog park? read more

The Alexandria City website lists this park as having an area for small dogs. Unfortunately, there's no signage stating that the area is for small dogs, and owners with large dogs use it. And are quite rude about their "rights" to use any part of the park. My dog is very small, so I do not want her in with large dogs, who tend to view her as a chew toy, or worse, prey. To the owners of large dogs who use this section of the park, please reconsider. Using the larger area for your large dogs may save you the headache and heartache of having to defend your dog if it injures or kills a much smaller dog. read more

Nice looking park with some grass, hills, plenty of benches. I don't really understand the gravel in the small dog park, but some of the other owners said it is nice when the other side is muddy. Water fountains were not working, and there are no poop bags. For the most part the other owners were very nice and friendly, except for one fat old man with a mangy mutt that doesn't like puppies, and acts like the king of the park. The park is usually fairly manicured and well kept. There are nice benches to sit on. The dog fountains are frequently out of order. I wish the small dog area wasn't covered in gravel and pebbles, but it's not a deal breaker. There are two separate areas of this park, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. However, people routinely bring their large dogs into the small dog area. This wouldn't bother me if the large dogs were gentle, but more often than not they are quite aggressive and treat the small dogs like prey. I have a small dog, and am constantly nervous that my dog will be injured or killed, so I usually can't stay if there are aggressive dogs present. There is one problematic gentleman in particular that I've run into a few times. He is a larger man and has a large short-haired buff colored dog with darker brown accenting its face. This dog has a habit of clamping its jaws around the necks of the smaller dogs. When I attempted to save one small dog by pushing the large dog off it, the owner proceeded to verbally assault me for "laying my hands on his dog". None of the other people present attempted to do anything or come to my (or the dog's) aid. Unfortunately, I will not be bringing my dog to this park anymore. It's a shame because it's located a block from my apartment, and my dog loves it there. But I simply cannot put up with this man's behavior any longer. read more

This dog park is quite nice. I do enjoy that it is fenced all around unlike other parks that only have 3/4 fences. My pup had a blast coming here and enjoyed meeting a bunch of new dogs to play with and run around in the dirt with. All the people that came here were pretty awesome and everyone seemed to just talk all about their dogs sharing stories. I will definitely be coming here with my pup again. read more

Love this large open dog park. The dogs are (mostly) well behaved and the owners are friendly.

First off, you need to pay $1.25/2 hours for parking. The meter only takes quarters or dimes. I took my dog here for the first time and left after about 10 minutes. There was a woman who informed me that her dog is aggressive with dogs he doesn't know. Meanwhile, there is a large sign that clearly states that aggressive dogs are not allowed at any time. I don't know whey she was even there with him/her. She ended up taking her dog out but as soon as we walked in, her friend's dogs started barking at my dog. The friend explained her dogs just bark but don't bite. Well..... explain that to my dog. He was curled up in a corner, frightened to death. The woman said, "this is your first time to this park, isn't it?", which makes me believe that they're all regulars here. Besides them there was no one else there... gee, I wonder why. read more
