    Chicken & mushroom pie

This is one of the pubs that were taken over by the gin company (we have been to some of the others). It is great for a traditional British pub meal. We went on a busy night, they were able to seat us upstairs without a wait, but it seemed to be shift change and no one visited for 10 minutes. We borrowed the carafe of water from another table after they left. Finally ordered - did one shot as we guessed (correctly ) that no one would come back. Long Island Iced Tea & Guinness...both good. Chicken & mushroom pie - Delicious! Paid extra for the green stuff they called broccoli (overcooked & thin, like broccolini) for 3.50 GBP - not worth a pence. Roasted carrots were great. The burger was perfectly cooked & chips were good & crisp. Overall, still rate high despite gaps in service & crappy broccoli. The pub was too busy at 5pm to find a place, and the views upstairs of the Thames were terrific.

Okay, this is my last London review as my daughter and I had our last supper here before I left. I needed to try Toad in the Hole before leaving London. We initially tried Blackfriars across the bridge but their kitchen was closed and they recommended Doggett's, their sister restaurant. Doggett's Coat and Badge is a newer multi floor restaurant right on the Thames River with the bar on the lower level, restaurant in the middle and some other Doggett's business on the other levels. We ate at the restaurant level. We were told the kitchen was closing within the hour so we had to order quickly. We pretty much knew what we wanted so we ordered quickly. We had great service from bartender to server. I had my Toad in the Hole and it didn't disappoint. My daughter had a vegan version of it and it was in a pie form. Like a lot of my English dinners, this one was very filling. I was totally stuffed and didn't eat for another 14 hours after this meal. Good stuff!

Only 3 stars because I can't judge on food as we only stopped in for a drink. The place was quite busy so it must be reasonably well liked. I had a Mortimer's Orchard mixed berry cider which was delicious

This is one of my go to pubs when I want a chilled drink by the river all year round. In summer they put out seats next to the river and the beer garden at the back is open. The beer garden may also be open sometimes in the winter with heaters so that people are warm. Even without that area though there is always a lot of space to sit as the pub has several floors and you can have a view of the river even when sitting inside. The back are has leather couches along the walls and there's a separate upstairs dining room as well as another floor that you can book for private functions. Considering all these different areas and the number of people that could be there at the same time I have to say that the pub does get quite busy at times. It becomes more apparent when everyone is trying to order from the same bar that usually might have only two or three people serving and it can take a while. But they do their best to get to everyone fast and also be quite friendly and nice so I personally don't mind the wait. The drinks selection is quite good, with several craft beers and ales along with the usual brands and the food is pretty decent. This is definitely my pub of choice in the area as it's easy, convenient and there's always space so if you are looking for a place it may be worth checking it out.

Doggetts Coat and Badge sits in one of the ugliest buildings ever created. Unless you're by the window looking out to the great views across the Thames then you're going to be sorely disappointed by the interior of this place too- it's really charmless and generic. Due to its location just off the Thames the clientele seems to be a very mixed bag and you're as likely to find a stag do out to watch the football as a couple of lost tourists trying to find there way out of here. On my visit both were in equal abundance and I got the delightful treat of watching two rival boys nights out have a good brawl. It was half past 7. I wish someone had taped this scene, it would make a perfect anti drink campaign. I've given this pub two stars on the basis of its view and its staff who were very friendly and apologetic about aforementioned brawl. Despite this however, I very much doubt I'll make it back here.

South Bank, particularly during the summer, is my favourite part of London. In itself it holds many incredible Arts venues, everyone seems in a pleasant mood. You can see across the Thames, to along the North Bank where the best of London's architecture is at the forefront. The only real draw back about is that it dies at 11, and beforehand the pubs aren't really up to much. Doggetts sits across a few floors and has outside seating. It has a wide range of beers and spirits and good staff. Unfortunately, the interior is really bland and unattractive. Even the outside seating seems ill-positioned. Not terrible, but a shame for an area with so much potential.

Good for a pint with lovely views, but the food and service are terrible. Defiantly overpriced for what you get

My wife actually booked dinner reservations in advance for Ye Old Cheshire Cheese, it was one of a few we did that for rather than just popping in. For some of these, Cheshire included, it isn't a bad idea if you want a full meal to do so as it gives you a table in a dining area that is quieter than the More raucous areas of the pub and guarantees you plenty of elbow room to dine. Every pub has fish and chips, and we had our share of it during our 8+ day trek, but my wife swears by this place as having the absolute best. I'd likely agree with that--we both had the traditional fish, chips, peas platter and every bite was great. We had a few slices of sourdough to hold us over while waiting for those plates. My wife had a bit of wine, and I tried a lager, lower ABV ale, and a pour of scotch opting for their "house" scotch. The spirits/beer menu was the same I saw used at a couple of what I think must be "sister" pubs all using the same distilleries and brewers. We were too full to try dessert. Service was friendly. Not sure if it was the vintage of my scotch or her wine, but price-wise this was by far our priciest pub visit in the area and I can't quite point my fingers at why, but I don't regret our meal and time here. As for historic interest, you can find pictures and placards of many of the pubs famous patrons from history--Dickens, Mark Twain on visits to London, etc. A first edition of a Dickens' book adorned a post by our table.

Given the location, I knew it was probably a tourist trap and I wish to avoid those usually but had no time so stopped in on a Monday afternoon for lunch. I'm so glad I did! I was in London only briefly and had yet to try proper fish and chips and I was definitely WOW'd. I've only had this in America, and this was definitely better than anything I've ever had. When it arrived on my table, I could feel the heat from the plate -- that's how scalding hot and fresh it was, and I loved that! The cod was absolutely massive, a thick portion of fish deep fried with the skin on within an incredibly crunchy beer batter. There were pieces of bone in it, but no bother, this only made it seem more fresh. The chips (thick cut fries) were perfectly crispy and both the fish and chips were insanely delicious with a bit of salt and malt vinegar (which I had to request by walking up to the bar). The dish came with a tartar sauce and ketchup, but tasted way better with the salt and vin. I absolutely love that the fish and chips also came with mushy peas, whereas most pubs only give you fish and chips alone. The dish was also very well priced at 9.95 GBP, and I was able to use my credit card, rounded up to 10 GBP because they have a 10 GBP minimum for using cards. I appreciate that this restaurant had free wi-fi, which I found out by asking my waiter, who quickly provided the secret code for me to use. In America you would never ask your server for this but I noticed that nearly every hotel and restaurant I visited during my 11-day tour of Europe offered wi-fi. Good on them, because how else would I check in to a restaurant on Yelp and shower them with praise and circulate promotional foodie photos on Instagram? During a weekday, many workers nearby flood this place to grab a pint during lunch....now, why don't I work in London? I would give this place five stars based on the food alone, but I am giving it four because I wished the service had been more attentive, as I had to go up to the bar to get malt vinegar and also to ask to pay my bill. I understand service in Europe is more laissez-faire than in America, but since this is a tourist spot I would have liked to be checked on by the staff at least once during my meal, and certainly to be presented with the bill. Note: They also serve Sunday roast dinner for 9.95 GBP on Sundays

We arrived just after the work day, and the crowd was buzzing just outside. We did the self-seating option indoors, and sat down to a great view of the Thames river, as we pondered our meal choices from the menu. The location is just great. For a leadoff drink, I had to go with the house cask ale, which was the Fuller's ESB, a drink I've been enjoying since the 1990's, and it delivered as expected. I went with an order of Sausages with mashed potatoes and peas...it doesn't get much more classic than that, and I was happy with it, especially with the quantity (3 sausages!). Wifey was on the hunt for a meat pie, and she went with the Steak, Ale & Mushroom Pie, which I can report was wholeheartedly approved. One of the better pies we've had on the overall trip, and the best we had at a pub location. The overall vibe of this pub is exactly as you might picture it, and we weren't disappointed with any aspect. Service, though not overly patient (hey - they were busy), was competent and pleasant. Cheers!
