I'm new to KC and just moved in the neighborhood near Dogs by Debin. I adopted a rescue pitmix from Stray Rescue in Saint Louis a couple of years ago and was needed some dog training. After calling what felt like a million trainers in KC, I still had no luck. I'm not sure if it was because of my dog's breed or her behavior issues or what, but it was so frustrating. I was out on a run near my neighborhood and saw tons of Dogs by Debin signs (the one with the pink dog on it) and I realized that it was located at Amity Woods Animal Hospital. When I got home I did some digging online and discovered that Dogs by Debin rescued animals and I knew that they would know someone that could help me out. So I called them and they immediately gave me the contact info for a local trainer, Robert Masters from Dogs Listen to Me, and voila, I had a consultation set up with him ASAP. You can tell that Dogs by Debin really love what they do and that they're great at it! I'm attending a new volunteer orientation this week because I'm so moved by their serivce and I'm pumped to help out their cause! p.s. I used to love this rescue and I even adopted my dog from this rescue. I was heavily involved in volunteering and then things started going south. I started questioning where the money was going. Other things were not adding up. I'm not sure donations were going to the rescue. Or even for example I sent a Bark Box to the rescue to be used in a raffle and she gave it to her dogs in her home. Other things were not adding up as well like when I helped raise over $10,000 dollars for the rescue as an "emergency fund" and then the next month she claimed she was in the hole again for medical bills. How? She conveniently took a trip to California after that. Where are the donations going? She claims it cost $20/day to feed each dogs but then why is there a huge stockpile of donations of food. That shouldn't be a cost for the rescue. Adoptions should cover spay/neuter and donations were coming in. Not much but enough to cover any additional medical. I think she pays herself a lot of money for her rescue from the donations because she doesn't have another job. She also started a GoFundMe for a sanctuary for dogs that raised maybe $4,000. That money did not go for a sanctuary. A sanctuary was never built but add ons to her house were conveniently done. Other things....Owner called me out on the volunteer page for not doing my job. Then in a private group chat I said please don't be rude to me, especially for a volunteer position. She took me off everything so I could no longer volunteer because I asked her to not be rude saying I was undermining her. No you treat your volunteers badly and make them feel guilty if something doesn't go her way. When I rescued a Boston terrier that was going to be dumped and she agreed for the rescue to take it on. It took weeks for the dog to get vaccinations. Then further even more weeks to set a neuter date. She told me he could not be neutered at the animal clinic of Kearney because since he had a short snout they needed special equipment. I believed her. He was then set up to go to NAWs. Well he ended up at the animal clinic of Kearney. Another lie. When the Boston terrier went to his new home and was killed I felt like she blamed me for her agreeing to take on the dog. Another thing to note is the rescue really only tries to take on puppies because they know puppies will sell. I've seen countless messages of people asking them to take on older dogs and more behavioral dogs and they won't. It comes down to is it really a rescue? Next things. All of the staff quit, people that have been there forever and although I don't know the exact reason for this I suspect it is because of some shady things happening behind scenes. Also the owner who is supposed be heavily involved in the rescue.... does not show up to events and usually never see her working events unless it was somehow related to her. When she showed up for the Harley Davidson event she told me I don't even know some of these dogs that we have intook. She's the owner, should she not know and meet every dog in her care? Lastly, the public doesn't know that countless dogs have been euthanized. Dogs that I'm not sure should have been euthanized and it's because of their quality of life. However, nothing was done to help raise money to help them, send them elsewhere, or give them a chance at another place. Was another rescue called? Was a trainer asked to volunteer and step in? Was it because they weren't getting donation and dogs just became too expensive? You know the answer, the answer is NO. The rescue has killed I think about 5 dogs that I know of in the last year. Honestly the place needs to be shut down, they are moving to foster based but even then I don't think the owner is responsible enough to advocate for the dogs. I wouldn't trust that the most recent donations will go to the dogs. I think the owner will pay herself with them and beg for more emergency fund. Again, I used to love the rescue but I have learned so much more in the last couple of months of countless lies and other shady things happening with the business. read more

What a fantastic place to find a new family pet!!! The facility is super clean and welcoming--DON'T BE AFRAID TO GO VISIT! There are so many wonderful dogs and everyone is very knowledgeable regarding the pups' temperament, etc.... It is an upbeat place to adopt a dog so you won't leave disappointed!!! I adopted my best-friend from Debin In May and couldn't be happier with the overall experience. After following her on Facebook, I noticed she needed a volunteer photographer & jumped on the opportunity. I told myself I wouldn't, but only after 2 visits I fell in love and took home Benny. After being hit by a fire-truck and abandoned by his owners, Amity Woods nursed him back to health. The Fire House even held a fundraiser to cover his vet bills! They made sure he was in top notch shape before released and I thank them for that! He has become the pack leader of our house and couldn't imagine it or life without him. The facility was huge and very clean. The kennels were also very large and clean. Each pup had their own run with blankets and toys. As we walked down the aisle She knew each dog and his/her personality traits and quirky tendencies.Which I thought was very cool. You could tell she was dedicated and Loved what she did. Her husband was also there cleaning kennels and helping with the walks. Dedicated! Her adoption fees are reasonable as well considering all she does for her adoptable's. All of her dogs come spayed/neutered, micro chipped, current on all vaccinations and heart worm tested. And the Adoption fees go straight back into the Shelter which is awesome!!! I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend DbyD to anyone wanting to adopt, donate or Volunteer!! She is an amazing lady and the world needs more people like her. read more

The staff really know their dogs and want people to know what they're getting into before they adopt. They worked with our family on how to handle a large dog and patiently worked with us for a couple of hours to make sure he would be a perfect fit in our family. Debin's group welcomed us like a family member from day one, and we are always amazed at the love, compassion and true heartfelt care they provide each and every dog that crosses their path. My husband and I adopted one of our dogs, a boxer mix named Scrappy, from Dogs by Debin a little over a year ago. We had been searching for a new dog to add to our family, and had no luck with any of the places that we had been to. My husband found Dogs by Debin online, and after a full day of searching other adoption places without success, we called Debin and asked if Scrappy was available. She immediately invited us to come by and meet him. When we got there, she gave us as much of his history as she knew, showed us other dogs that we might be interested in, and let us have some one on one time with Scrappy so we were able to see how he felt towards us. When we mentioned that we had another dog that would need to Scrappy before we made a decision, she asked us to go grab her and let them meet. On our way back, she called to make sure we were on our way because there was a dog trainer available to help. Debin and the trainer took the dogs out and observed their interactions first, then invited us outside to watch them, too. I really appreciated that Debin and the trainer took the time to take the dogs away to watch them without us around so that the dogs couldn't feed off our nervous energy and act accordingly. The trainer spoke with us about what he had observed and deemed it a good match. We did end up adopting Scrappy, and we are so happy that we did. Debin still checks in to make sure that everything is okay, and when we went to the vet the other week for their yearly exam, she immediately recognized Scrappy and came over to say hello. The facility is by far the cleanest and nicest one that we have been to, and Debin is the friendliest and most helpful person that we have come across. I would like to share our story in hopes that the dog we got goes to the right home, if that exists and in hopes that no one else gets hurt! I feel like the true temperament and personality of the dog that we adopted was not made serious to us before bringing the dog into our home. We adopted Ollie, and American Bulldog. She was great at the shelter and in our home for the first week. After the new wore off she snapped at me and then bit my husband in the forearm causing permanent scarring and trauma....I REALLY hope that this dog does not get mistakenly adopted to another family with children and adults that are not aggressive dog trained. With all this said she was held on a 10 day bit hold and is now up for adoption again with this shelter with no warning about her aggressive tendencies she has showed countless times not only in our home which was NOT chaotic at all and in the home prior to ours she snapped at a 9 year old! This has to be the most disorganized place I've ever been at. Went to adopt a dog and had to wait hour for the foster person to bring in the dog, which isn't a big deal as we wanted to see the dog. So we left and came back to a rude foster lady that didn't want to answer any of our questions and after she talked to my wife about why we had to get rid of our dog she instantly got her own opinion that we weren't suited to own a dog. Pissed me off. Then she asked if we knew the adoption fee like it was going to scare us off. When we said yes $200, she said oh then went into the managers office and make up some story on why the dog wouldn't be good for our family that has a 7 year old kid as all of a sudden they are saying the dog has anger issues. B.S. The dog was sitting with us for 30 minutes and no problems. So we walked out with a crying 7 year old that wasn't getting a dog they said was up for adoption. Stay away from this disorganized place as they really don't care if their pet are adopted as long as they have foster homes to stay in. Terrible!!!!!!!!!!! read more
