We had a group of 14 people that chose Doherty's on a recommendation. We arrived at the restaurant and were shocked to find out they had arranged a table for all of us in a back room. Our server was Austin. Austin was incredible. He handled all of us with great knowledge and enthusiasm. He had answers about every menu item that we asked about. He took group photos of us and had coozies for all of us. He could not have been more entertaining and a great ambassador for the restaurant. All of our group would highly recommend Doherty's! Checked out this Irish pub in Decatur that's more typical of the local bars. It certainly isn't fancy but it's not all bad though. Doherty's is known for its cheap drinks, food, and games. For sure it's even cheap for around here. There's a few locals always at the bar it seems. After many of the other places around here have closed, it was a later night option for us to get drinks and a bite. It was pretty quiet inside. This place isn't a wild hangout most times. It has a pretty simple menu. There's the most basic stuff. It's about $5 for the cheapest Irish whiskey, not bad. The food can be even cheaper if you can believe it. Fries are $3, and these are about the healthiest food here you can get. The rest of the food mostly is meats. Good place to get something cheap. It may not always be good food, in fact it usually isn't, but most people just come for the drinks so they don't really care too much about any of the food. I came at lunch (after trying to call for over 90 mins) to place a to-go order for 6 people. No one ever answered the phone so I thought maybe their service wasn't working, and I'd just have to place an order in person. I went to the bar and said I'd like to place a to-go order and that I'd tried calling previously. The lady snapped at me. She was very busy, but I think she could have handled that better. Our waitress was very attentive & checked on us throughout. The shrimp cocktail & escargot were good, as was the shepherd's pie, BUT the corned beef & cabbage left much to be desired. It tasted like it had been sitting for a long time & the edges of the corned beef were dried out. It didn't have any flavor, nor did the cabbage & red potatoes. We sat at the bar .. had to wait a bit then she took our order .. it was Friday night and fish sounded so good.. I ordered cod and fries .. $13.50 and you had to order the slaw separate and it was $3.50.. When it came it was one piece of fish so I thought It was all burnt breading and no fish inside!!!! I was going to tell the lady that waited on us but she was no where in sight. A man came by gave us a bill and took my plate before I could say anything .. I was so sad and disappointed .. My Ruben was eh. wasnt doing backflips over it. Red Pepper soup very good. At the end the waitress automatically added 20% because we were a party of 7 but divided bills into 2 and 5.. a little frivolous assuming youre a great server with 20% And she was a good server but 18% wouldve been fair if u were a tight ass w the money. Atleast they only did the 20% on the food tho not the tax. We Wouldve gave her 20%+ anyways but dont think that was her call to make. kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. she thought 'Ima go ahead and tag these people' assuming we wont tip or not that good. Wouldve prefered the Cabbage more cooked, it was raw and hard. Almost a crunch. like a coleslaw without the mayo. Pepsi bubly and good. and on time. A little too much ice. Mozzarella stick p good. Their Reuben sandwich is fantastic. My Caesar salad and red pepper with Gouda soup...delicious to the last warm spoonful of tasty goodness! The people there were welcoming and very friendly so we felt right at home. Many more items on the menu for us to explore in future trips on our date nights. Been married since 77 but Friday night will always be date night. Now this lovely establishment will become part of our rotation. Thank you Decatur for so many wonderful restaurants! read more

Have been wanting to try this place out for a long time and finally made it through the door. Late dinner after a local event so we arrived around 8/830p. Not a lot of patrons at that time so we had the place to ourselves for the most part. Sat at the bar and enjoyed our bartender/server. Super nice gal who was very courteous, efficient and made you feel at home. She was on top of our drink refills, made good menu suggestions and kept herself busy in the meantime stocking, wiping stuff down etc. Now that might sound like a funny thing to comment on but I'm so over people on their cell phones when they should be working. Especially in the service industry. Anyway! We ordered the waffle fry nachos and the hot beef sandwich- cannot recall Irish name for it - and both were very good. I wish the nachos had more nachos on it for $9.99 but it was tasty and did the trick so my only complaint. We will return soon to try something new! I bet this would be a great place to watch a football game on the weekend. Just had that vibe going to me...neighborhood old school bar, excellent staff, cold beer and a good nosh. read more

This place is one of my favorites to come here when I visit Illinois. I always love the food and am never disappointed. The reason I am giving this 4 stars is because our service sucked. It took them until our food came out to get one person a Pepsi. Either way, I would still come here any day just to eat the food. The Ruben Ponyshoe is by far my favorite thing on the menu. The cheese sauce is delicious and so was the corned beef. Despite the poor service I highly recommended you check this place out if you have a chance. Yeah sometimes service is slow but for me the food is the most consistent in Decatur. Their app options are really good - fried pickles, mushrooms, cordon blue bites. I love the red pepper soup. My husband had been familiar with this establishment back in the 70's. Since we were looking for something new, we decided to give it a try. I wanted to try local beers-the first three I asked for, they are 'all out' of this or that when I tried to order. The list was fairly extensive, although not much available from that list...hmmm. At this point, I ordered a Corona Extra-our waiter brought me a light and my husband an extra. I told him I wanted an extra, and he copped an attitude saying 'you ordered a light'. My response 'why would I order a light when I don't drink light?' On to the food. it was not memorable. I guess after the waiter did not even bother to come by and ask how things were going. We would of at least ordered another beer. I would NOT return to this place and tolerate that waiter. It does not surprise me that there were few patrons in there. So if you are strolling downtown Decatur and looking for a place, just keep walking....you are bound to find better service. read more

Can't believe this place hasn't been reviewed. I've eaten here many times over the past year. Can't go wrong with the red pepper soup or escargot for apps. For lunch I've been chomping down on fish and chips or the reuben. The reuben rocks. They char up a pretty good steak for dinner as well. It's a converted bowling alley, has a full bar, and all the locals know the place. But for those of you that may be passing through, you need to give this place a shot. This is an ok bar bar to visit in Decatur. They usually have a decent beer selection. Their menu is pretty solid as well. When I usually go I like to order their Rueben sandwich. I went to Doherty's with a group of 8 people for a trivia night. We were treated like crap. I spent $125 for dinner and couldn't get a waitress to come to my table. We were told that because we were with the group we had to walk up to the bar to order. I ordered a prime rib sandwich and a salad and was again told by the wait staff that if I wanted silverware that I had to go up to the bar and get it myself. When I went to the bar, they would only give me a plastic forks and knife. I will never go back read more

Went here for lunch on a Friday with some coworkers. It wasn't very busy and we were served drinks right away but it took a very long time for them to take our food orders. It then took a while to get our food. When the three of us got our food, I was given the incorrect side and one of my coworkers was given the wrong bread. When we told the waitress, she was fairly rude but did bring us the correct food quickly. I had the cup of soup and half sandwich option, I got a half a chicken wrap and it basically had 3 bites of chicken in it and immediately fell apart.
