The top is called Penygadair, Welsh for on the chair, on top of the chair! Idris is the Welsh name for Arthur. They could make more of Arthur in this area for visitors, I think. Then a friend started taking a cottage near Dolgellau every year and we always visit him there, so each year we see this beautiful mountain which dominates the landscape for miles around. We aren't climbers like the other reviewers (just walkers), but I can recommend a holiday around here if only to admire the mountain panorama!

There is a lot of walking around to do and beautiful waterfall area for hiking about (but you must be careful). The owners are terrific and deliver firewood to your tent. The beginning of our camping here was terrific, again before school holidays started. On our last night it was the beginnin go school summer holidays and it got quite busy so if you want peace, go midweek. Will definitely return.

Its a small family run site you drive in pitch your tents and the farmer will visit you to take payment (£6 pppn and £2.50 for kids) you can camp right on the river and wake to find dozens of small wild birds cheekily after your toast. Its close to some fantastic clean welsh beaches. Take a walk in the awesome mountains, sail lake bala then come back to your tent to a good oldfashioned campfire. I'm converted Iwill be taking my kids here every year from here on in!!

I miss cherry trees, strawberry fields, apple trees - things I grew up with and I always took for granted. I like the hills around Machynlleth. I love the sheep who look so beautiful. The rivers are clear nearby. I like the soft footpaths.

Castle is stunning but avoid the toilets like the plague that it possibly has. They were disgusting and we were the first there in the morning, should have been cleaned.

I've been visiting the Cliff Railway on Constitution Hill since I was a little girl and it still…read moreexcites. Its a funicular railway which goes up and down the side of Constitution Hill overlooking Aberystwth sea front. It is a bit scary as you ascend or descend the steep hill (ok its incredibly scary if like me you are scared of heights!!), Also the slightly unkempt look of the carraiges and the track and to the suspense! My children absolutely love it though and take great delight it trying to scare me and get me to open my eyes! The veiw from the top is great though and well worth it. Theres quite a large restaurante serving everything you could possibly want, its nothing fancy, but quite good considering its stuck on top of a hill! You can also play frisby golf (!?) and visit the camera obscura (75p adults free for children), all worth doing. It cost us £10 to go on the railway (2 adults 4 children) which is worth it if the weather is good and you can spend a bit of time at the top, but if you end up going up and straight back down again the price is a bit steep (haha).

All safety equipment is provided and staff are on hand to make sure that everything is OK. Ropeworks is basically a variety of aerial challenges from death-slides to abseiling, high ropes to monkey bars. There's no theming here and, to be honest, it's a bit of a disappointment. If you've ever done a go Ape! course then this will seem like a very poor relation. It's simply not big enough and you can't escape the feeling that it's just a bunch of telegraph poles and towers situated next to a kiddie park. Probably best suited to younger teens and those who have a bit of a fear of heights - people for whom Go Ape! would be too much!

I took my sister to the Ropeworks a little while ago as a challenge for the both of us. They…read morebasically have a whole lot of telegraph poles with arial challenges. When you arrive you are given all the safety equipment and shown how to put it on. This includes harnesses, hard hats and so on. They reccommend that you wear jeans, and not shorts. You are in a group of about half a dozen people with an instructor who guides you round the course. The first challenge we did was to climb a telegraph pole, which had hand/feet holds up the sides. Your harness is clipped on and whilst you could loose your footing you can't actually fall! On the top was a small platform, maybe two feet square. Once standing on the platform (admiring the stunning view of the mountains and sea if you're not too scared to look down!), there is a trapeze bar, this slides so that it is just out of reach and you have to jump off the platform to grab the trapeze. I missed but still felt a great sense of achievement. You are then lowered down in the harness, which is a lot more comfortable than it looks. Then we had a go on the G3 swing. This is similar to a normal kids swing at the park, except that 3 of you sit on it side by side, and your harness is clipped on. Then it's raised up to the top of the telegraph pole height, and one of you pulls a cord which allows it to swing. It's a huge adrenaline rush and a little sad when it finally comes to rest a the bottom. Finally we went up the climbing wall, to have a go at the assault course in the air. This is where I chickened out. Looking back, with a bit more encouragement from the instructor I could have done the course and felt much more of a sense of achievement. You walk round on ropes, swing across monkey bars and similar in a circle, then its down on a death slide. Back down on the ground we all received certificates to mark our achievements. The instructor was very friendly and soon built up a team spirit within our little group. I understand that the course is available for companies doing team building exercises, schools and more. At £20 for two hours it is more expensive than other tourist attractions but well worth this for the safety, expertise and sense of achievement. There isn't a souvenier shop and I don't thnk that they are open in the evenings.

When you reach Penrhyn point you can go and explore the beach and dunes, or catch a small ferry to Barmouth. Then catch the train back to Fairbourne.

Shell Island is a huge campsite that my husband and I have visted a lot. The campsite extends…read moreacross a huge area from sand dunes to a causeway there is lots to see and many different camping expreinces to be had. You can have a wild time or a sedate and quite time. We prefer a calmer time whilst camping so stay well away from the sand dunes which tends to be over run with teenagers making noise. We're happy for them do it and don't want to complain so choose the other side of the island where we're unlikely to be disturbed. Plus the views are better on the other side of the island. As you enter the campsite we turn left towards the harbour and camp on that end of the Island. There is a great little beach there that hardly anyone else visits, you can mooch around the harbour and get great views of Harlech castle without being disturbed. I wouldn't visit during any of the school holidays or bank holiday as the whole place is packed out and at times you have to queue up the causeway just to get on and off the island. There are a few shops on the island (an ice cream shop, a beachwear/surf shop/camping shop and a mini supermarket) which can be handy but we tend to arrive fully stocked. The pub is okay, we tend to drink off the island or the beach with out BBQ. We ate at the cafe once and I'd say avoid at all costs. Shower are free as are the toilets. They are largely kept clean and tidy. Also on dotted across the site are portaloos which are great when a bit drunk and not in the mood for the long walk up to the toilets. The portaloos are kept clean and emptied often. I've never had a problem with one and I'm quite prissy. Shell Island is perfect for a weekday camping getaway outside of the summer holidays.
