Expect long wait times but they do a good job at getting the most people on her ride. If traveling with strollers or disabled they have a separate entrance and car reserved. Just proceed to the disabled ramp for boarding. Staff is friendly and the train ride is cool. Loved hearing the conductor and train captain speak during our ride. They warn you in the beginning about the flying cinder that may get in your eye if you're not wearing sunglasses. You're advised that if this happens it's not an emergency to pull the emergency cord (lol) but to let a staff member know and they'll get you to medical when back at the station. I was glad I had in my sunglasses because I could feel the cinder flying around and landing on my clothes and face. The ride makes it around the park and points out some of the popular rides and history. They do a great job at making the ride interesting for guests.

The Dollywood train ride is far better than those you find at most amusement parks. The train ride itself is about 20 minutes in length and not only takes you through the heart of the park but also into the back country as well. There is beautiful Pastorial scenery and great nature views. You have a friend engineer and conductor who will "blow the whistle" for you especially when you are on the roundabout at the far end of your trip. It blows for quite a while too. Now and then the engineer will give you a wave when they tell you. Expect cinders to fall on your lap while enjoying this ride. That is because it a 110 coal fired steam engine that's leading you. There are two different trains that go on the track. One is called Cinderella and the other is called Klondike Katie. The latter dates back to the time when Dollywood was known as the Rebel Railroad. It does not matter which side of the train you are sitting on. Since the ride goes full circle you get both views either on your way out or on your way back. Please note, the times listed on your park map or Dollywood app are departure times. They advise you to get in line at least 20 minutes ahead of your chosen departure time. I noticed that as a train pulls in a number of people hurry up to get in line to board it so it's best to follow their guidelines. Safety is the number on priority on this train. Above you is an emergency cord running through the center. It is for true emergencies only as they will prepare an ambulance for you should the need arise. Give a wave to the folks crossing at Owen's farm. You can hear the train whistle and see the steam throughout the park. It is definitely fun for the entire family and a not to be missed attraction at Dollywood.

Fast forward to 2026 and it was my first time coming out to Pigeon Forge to check out Dollywood as I was in town to participate in the inaugural Run Dollywood Half Marathon. Although I had a 2-day park ticket, I needed to save my legs for the race. Parking was $25, but thankfully, it was free for race participants and spectators. For both days, I didn't stay very long. It was raining the first day, so I mostly walked around to check everything out. It wasn't too large, but a decent size. Over the 2 days, I did go on 2 rides: Lightning Rod and Blazing Fury. The Lightning Rod was a pretty thrilling ride. They really do have you strapped in tight! The Blazing Fury was entirely indoors, kind of weird, and much more tame in comparison. Some other rides that I saw were Demolition Derby, Lemon Twist which was their version of Disney's Mad Tea Party, and The Amazing Flying Elephants which was their version of Disney's Dumbo. They had quite a few more rides. It was a good mixture of rides for the little ones as well as for the older thrill seekers. While they had a lot of fair type foods at various locations, I only made sure to visit the Grist Mill to try their famous cinnamon bread. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and I thought it was indeed worth it and lived up to the hype!

We parked across the street in their free parking area, which had plenty of available spots at that hour. The walk over was less than a mile and very manageable. Although the weather wasn't ideal--light rain and chilly temperatures--it didn't take away from the experience. We started by walking around and taking everything in. There are so many cute shops, unique stores, and plenty of great photo opportunities throughout the area. We did a little shopping, sampled some food, and purchased tickets to ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, which was a highlight. Before heading out, we made one last stop at Ole Smoky Moonshine, which is always a fun experience. Even though the weather didn't fully cooperate, we still had a great time and really enjoyed our visit. The Island has a fun, lively atmosphere and offers something for everyone--we'd definitely go back!

With that being said, we found it a bit of a tourist trap and pricey, but that was to be expected for the area and kind of place this is. There are tons of alcohol tasting places and food places through out here. We did do a stop and tasting at Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine, which was unique enough since I am from the west coast visiting, and fun. I still think if you want more authentic tastings and food, to go to downtown Gatlinburg instead (it's all similar enough though). We also did a wine tasting here and all the wines were so sweet for my palette. I did enjoy the shops and pursuing around this beautiful area. A great spot to get some steps in. Many places also offer free samples of food to (like the candy store) so don't be afraid to go in and try.
