I've been taking private self-defense sessions with Dom for a few months now, and I'm loving it. I'm in my late forties with no prior martial arts experience. I'm not particularly athletic and I have several chronic issues that I have to be careful about, but I feel like if I can do this, most others can too. I've taken some women's self-defense workshops elsewhere and while they were a good starting point to emphasize the importance of being aware of your surroundings and using your voice, as far as physically defending yourself, they were very limited. Dom teaches self defense with jiu jitsu fundamentals, and the drills are very practical in the real world. I had briefly taken a Krav Maga class somewhere else and while I appreciate the benefits of KM, it focused on a lot of striking. As an older, petite woman who isn't particularly strong or aggressive, quite a lot of that didn't seem practical for me. What I'm learning with Dom is much more in line with moves that I would feel comfortable and natural performing. BJJ relies a lot on technique and leveraging as opposed to raw strength, so you don't have to be the strongest or fastest person. There's a heavy focus on the defending part of self-defense in our sessions, which is exactly what I was looking for. And everything I've learned so far, I can see being applied in real-world situations. Not only do his lesson plans make sense, but Dom is also a great teacher. He's easy-going so I feel comfortable asking questions and letting him know if there's a particular move I'd prefer to avoid due to chronic issues. He's super patient as we perform the drills over and over and over until I get them right (or at least less wrong). He explains everything very clearly in a way that's easy to understand. And it's just plain fun. I'm here to learn but it's probably one of the most fun things I do every week. There's also a weekly women's self defense class I attend as well comprised of a small group of women from beginner to a little bit more experienced. I obviously learn a lot more from the private sessions but the class is a good opportunity to apply the drills to a more real-world scenario as we partner up with different people. I've been so impressed with Dom that I recommended my sister sign up her 2 young kids to his kids' class. They don't always enjoy new experiences but they just had their first class and really liked it and asked to continue. Dom's a great teacher for the kids as well. Family classes are also offered, where kids and parents train together, which is such a good idea. On top of all this, his rates, both for the classes and private sessions are an amazing deal. I'm a 50 something and have been a part of this gym since March 2022. It's been a fantastic journey that is a key part of my health and fitness regime. You will learn so much about yourself; it's not all physical, there's an intellectual and psychological component too. Coach Dom is excellent, especially as he gets to know you and your goals; he stresses fundamentals and building upon technique. If its your first time, you'll be humbled right away, but keep persevering and going to the classes each week. After 6-months, you'll look back and realize you've got greater confidence and situational preparedness.
