This gym is the best gym I have ever been to in my life so far! I was a complete noob and beginner to combat sports, specifically Muay Thai, and was shy at first trying to get myself just to walk through the door and ask a question! When I finally did, I was greeted with one of the most welcoming and friendly gym environments! Alex and Kyle have been very kind and helpful with answering my questions since the first day I walked in. The intro class was great and I didn't feel embarrassed at all for being a complete beginner- they teach the basics, have gear to borrow, and make the whole process trying it out very smooth and chill. Since then I have been going to the Muay Thai classes as much as I can. PRS has some of the best coaches, who are legends- so you absolutely get the bang for your buck! Coach Rob and Coach Six have been great coaches, and patient with me as a beginner. I asked for any and all tips, advice, and coaching during class and if they ever see me practicing outside of class, and they've helped me out a ton! I am very bad at hand eye coordination, but with patience and practice I get better every day. Coach Michael and Coach Shallon have been extremely helpful with learning sparring techniques on Wednesdays and more about the gym as well! All the coaches for Muay Thai are great and friendly! I recently been getting into some of the Boxing and jujitsu classes as well and had the same experience- passionate, motivating, and great coaches. Coach Mark teaches the Boxing class and has awesome boxing and strength and conditioning workouts, its very motivating and make me determined to get better. Coach Alex teaches Jujitsu, and has taught me a lot about the sport- its very technical, but he is a patient and motivating coach as well, and has given me great advice and made the sport more digestible to understand as a beginner! As I get more fit, Im hoping to add in more of these classes as well:)! Not only do the coaches help me improve as an athlete, but many of the fellow athletes are kind and welcoming to beginners as well- I usually ask for any tips or comment on my tech and get good helpful feedback. They have gloves, pads, shin guards and head gear available to borrow and use, and keep all their equipment sanitized and clean- including the training floor after each class. There are plenty of bags to train on, including some by the mirrors to watch your tech. They got everything you need in a gym, including an erg, assault bike, plenty of stationary bikes, and treadmills, dumbbells, kettle bells, benches, plates and bars, jump ropes, medicine balls, and rollers for recovery. Theres plenty of space to store your things and its safe to as well, as the locker area is in the back of the gym. They have clean mens and womens bathrooms and shower for after training. They got a really awesome ring and punching bags- basically combat sport heaven is PRS. The gym community is very friendly, welcoming, diverse, and accepting of all backgrounds. I've only been to this gym two times, but it's the bomb! I come here for muay thai and it's the most intense work out I've had! Muay thai has always interested me since the first time I watched it on the UFC channel. Now that I have some time, I decided to go to a gym and actually learn it. I had tons of fun and I felt good after my workouts. Jason, the strength and conditioning instructor taught me the basics of muay thai: the kicks, the punches, and the voice commands. He drills you hard, but he's super nice and upbeat, a good mixture if you're like and need a good workout but also very un-athletic. The workout starts out with warm ups like jump roping and push-ups and ends with cool downs of some yoga poses and plank push ups. In between, that's where the magic happens. More of the advanced students are doing drills with one another with the teacher Ganyao (one of the head Muay thai trainers) while the beginners like me were off to the side being tutored by Jason. I worked out and sweated a lot! It's super fun, relatively easy, and you're in a friendly environment where everyone focuses on either becoming healthier or training to be better at muay thai. read more

We had to move back to San Diego for an emergency starting October 1st. We prepaid for 6 months for my son and used the membership for one month in September 2021. The owner Mike said he could not refund my money for October, November, December, January and February. He is a crook and will be reported to the BBB. Find anywhere else to go. Also there is a law that he has broken by not honoring the refund!! Legends and friendly! The former Fairtex trainers either still pass through here or still even come here to train and teach. This place is the natural heir to the former Fairtex SF gym and for good reason. You won't get a better workout or the ability to work w legends in the sport of Muay Thai. Legit. This place it fun, hard work, and a no-nonsense gym with real fighting instruction. You can join if you're trying to get in shape and get bored with regular exercise (like me). Or if you want to learn from experts how to box, do muy thai, jiu jitsu, etc. I joined 2 years ago when I was starting to get out of shape from over-working / getting old. I was a bit intimidated at first because the classes are no-joke, but the instructors made it easy for me to get up to speed. I particularly liked Omar's strength and conditioning classes (he also teaches jiu jitsu). It's a full body workout that's never boring and never easy. After 3 months I was feeling good again. After 6 months I was in some of the best shape of my life. Before this gym I used to run and lift weights. My legs were always tight and tired. I would spend an hour each day stretching and still not feel loose. All that went away when Omar taught me how to do true full body workouts. The staff is professional, kind, and not cheesey. It's clean. You can keep to yourself and no one bothers you, or you can make friends. Up to you. I can't say enough good things about this place. I wish I hadn't moved away. I've been training BJJ here for about a year. I started as a complete beginner. I chose this gym because I liked Omar's teaching style. He can watch you doing something completely wrong and tell you one or two simple cues that you can follow to fix like 60% of your problems. He has a really impressive ability to demonstrate and explain complex and detail-heavy techniques in a way you can actually absorb. Omar's calm, patient, and positive attitude creates a good feeling on the mat, even when he is making us do horrible conditioning. Everyone here is friendly. Bro vibes in the sense that everyone is your bro and wants you to succeed. People support each other at competitions, etc. The gym is clean. There is a usable selection of barbells, plates, racks, dumbbells, and kettlebells. BJJ always splits the mat with boxing or muay thai or whatever else is going on, but there's room for everyone. read more

HHHUUUUHHHHHH!!!! That's the sound I make when I hit pads during the Muay Thai workouts. Doesn't sound cool now but trust me, with my MMA shorts and tattoos I look pretty dope. Now that we have that established, this place is just straight up fun. I came here to escape the monotony of the regular gym I go to. It is THE best workout I've ever had in my life, cardio + strengthwise. I've done track & field, swimming, yoga, basketball, weight lifting, etc, and all have their positives, but this takes it to another level. I thought I was in fairly good shape but this place proved me wrong. The value of having someone help push you beyond what you thought you were physically capable of is priceless. The trainers are fairly knowledgeable and fun to work with. People there are for the most part pretty friendly and open. Like any other place you sometimes come across the 'really serious athlete' as well as regular people who just want a work out. Pick and choose who you want to work with (there is partner work which makes it more fun), there's a good variety. For the female readers - there is a large number of women who go to this gym as well so you won't be stuck with some sweaty gross dude if you're concerned about that. Do you want a 6 pack? This place will help get you there if you have all the other variables in place (good diet, sleep, etc). To address some of the negative comments about being mislead in the contract...read the contract before you agree to sign it! I don't know how much simpler it can be. If you have a problem with what PRS advertises and if there's any contradictions in the contract, that's one thing, but it's still up to you to READ the contract before you put any ink on it. That's like that Eduardo guy in the facebook movie...he was so eager to sign his contract and he got pissed off later when he realized what he actually signed without reading the contract. It has been 1.5 months since I joined PRS and have been delaying my rating of the gym. The reason being was that I did not want to give an impulse rating, but one that was objective over a period of time to give others an accurate depiction. That said, I have not been disappointed and rate PRS in the highest regards on practically all levels. Early Research: I was looking for a gym for conditioning and muay thai basics since I have NO PRIOR martial arts training. I work full time and dont have all the time in the world to invest in learning an new martial arts...I just want to place to teach me good fundamentals that has the SHORTEST TIME TO VALUE. I did some prior research and found that PRS has THREE times the amount of ratings compared to other gyms. This hard raw data surely can not be a coincidence... So i called in and had a chat with someone name JAY. He was patient and listened to me ask fifty questions about the gym operations and classes. It wasnt cheap, but I was still curious. I decided to go in and check it out myself. Classes seems friendly and Jay walked me around for 40 minutes and went more in depth into what my expectations are to be in the coming classes. GOOD news is that they offer a $20 introductory class and you can take it to see if it is a good fit before committing. I think thats a great deal as they arent trying to verbally close you, but rather let the class speak for itself. I took that class the following Saturday and I was hooked... Membership: This isnt cheap as the initial pricing can knock your senses off. There is a setup fee and then the monthly fee if you do not commit to a biannual or annual contract. Im sure that for many people out there, this pricing is a show stopper as your wallet cant allow you to invest in it...but I have to say. IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. At a gym alone, getting ANY special attention or instruction nabs you at $45 or $60 each session with a personal trainer. Here, you get unlimited access to all classes (whether you want to take Muay Thai, boxing, or Jiu Jutsu...or ALL!) Unlike gyms such as 24 hour fitness, they are contingent on making sure you have great form and get personal attention. Your first 1-3 classes you get all 1 on 1 lessons to learn basic fundamentals and then you join the class with everyone else. Instructors: The bread and butter of this place. My first 4 sessions I was personally trained by Byron, who was friendly, made jokes, and pointed out subtle advice to correct my form. He did NOT go easy and pushed me in a respectable fashion so that I can learn but also have fun. Jay is usually manning the front desk but often heads some of the classes to warm up or warm down with his killer drills. I swear he pushes you a few notches beyond what you're comfortable with. Sucks balls but you cant help but laugh when he saids stuff like, "Dont you cheat yourself now! Keep going!" Then theres Guanyao, the living embodiment of Sagat from Streetfighter. This bonafide killer monster heads the Muay Thai classes and comes up with combos so that you can get it into your muscle memory. He knows his stuff and whenever he walks around during the routines, I always take the opportunity to ask him about throwing a particular move and ask him to go into it. He does it and watches you mimic it 1-2 times to correct you if need be (in a respectable non asshole fashion). I love the diligence in his instructional style. Advance classes: Im just there for the all level muay thai classes so I dont do sparring yet. Speaking with the instructors, they said that its a good idea to get your fundamentals down for a few months if you have no prior training before stepping into the ring. I often sit after class to just watch the more advance students (a lot of females!!! WTF?!?!?!) spar with each other. Ive seen them train with Guanyao and their form/power is simply inspiring. It is motivating just watching. Overall: I came into the gym with simple aspirations to punch and kick better. What I have found was that my endurance has tripled and my strength has increased. I can run 3 times as long now and my punches and kicks feel precise. My muscles are getting toned and the belly fat is drastically disappearing. Scary that its been but 1.5 months. This place definitely gets points for the staff: hella friendly, encouraging but not overly pushy, and totally cool if you're a newbie and don't quite have the routine down yet. Robert the head boxing trainer is my dude, hella light-hearted but lots of expertise. Byron and Jason are also around a lot, energizing people and modeling some healthy energy. The membership is also pretty diverse on all levels, it doesn't feel like a bowl of testosterone at all, feels more like a community. Unfortunately for me, my work schedule didn't always work with the class schedule. The weeknight boxing and kickboxing classes are 5:30 and 6:30, respectively, and the earliest I could make it was 7pm. If they could alternate with the jiu-jitsu classes (which are at 7:30pm) a couple times a week, then that would've been nice. Instead I had to settle for the heavy bag most nights, which was a great workout, but not what I originally paid for. Speaking of paying, the membership is pretty pricey. I did the 6 month membership at $774, which broke down to $129/month. On average I could only make it like, 8 times a month, so that meant I was paying roughly $16 each visit, most of which was just punching a bag. This doesn't include the couple of weeks where I couldn't make it at all because something came up or I had to leave town for a bit. That said, it's probably a great place if it works with your schedule and you can take classes at least 3 times a week consistently. read more

Pac Ring is a nice facility with decent equipment and pads. But I would recommend Cheetah Muay Thai. I have been a member of both, and I enjoyed both, however, Pacific lacks that One-on-One training experience. It is a BIG gym, with lots of students. (At times there are so many people you end up bumping in to one another while hitting pads). Another thing is, they are pricey, and they require you to have a one year contract with no escape should your schedule/living situation/salary change etc. I liked the staff there, and I enjoyed my time while I was a member, but the size of the place and the cost was just not enough to keep me there. I prefer smaller, more "family" feel. At Pacific Ring there are so many people, that you end up forgetting if you've held pads for them before. I held pads with another student who introduce himself to me three times lol. At the time that I joined, I was told I had to do a one year contract, and that after my one year contract ended, I could go month-to-month. Then when my one year actually did end, they told me I HAD to sign up for another year, or pay a higher month-to-month fee. That was the final straw for me. This gym is for fitness fanatics AND those who hate to exercise. I say this because I'm a little bit of both depending on how much I drank the night before. Other reviews here have gone through a class and its routine so I'll skip that. For the Ladies: If you're looking for a workout that pushes you to your physical limit, gives you confidence, results and makes you sweat in places you didn't think was possible, this is it. The staff is friendly and it doesn't matter if you've never thrown a punch before. If you have previous training, you will only get better. For the Guys: If you're looking for a place to learn or test & polish your existing skills, be it boxing or kicking (I can't speak for the MMA class, haven't taken it) look no more. This place is a legit martial arts school with trainers who have fighting experience. The owner and kickboxing instructor, Mike, has trained in Thailand and focuses on moves that you'll use should you ever step in the ring. He's kind of a quiet, unsuspecting guy who walks through each class and gives individual feedback should you need a tweak in whatever it is you're doing. That same unsuspecting guy can also kick a 200 lb. man off his feet during a drill demonstration. The workout itself is intense and you will be challenged every time. My favorite class: The Muay Thai kickboxing. Why: I love to kick. A well executed roundhouse with perfect technique doesn't feel like exercise; it feels like I'm harnessing power that could derail a train. I probably couldn't... but it feels like that. Oh, and elbow strikes are probably the most gratifying thing next to a spinning back fist. My favorite instructor: It's hard to say, they're all good but I think it's D Pooler, the boxing instructor. Why: He has decades of experience (as a champion fighter AND professional trainer) and passion around good technique that makes you want to punch until you think you're arms are going to fall off. He's also very motivating during those last few minutes of class. Drawbacks: Students who wear polyester ..., that shirt may look cool but you stink. Cotton is your friend when you sweat this much. The weight equipment could be a little better and I'd love it if they got more treadmills/ cardio equipment. i LOOOOOOOVE this place... aka "Pacific Ring Sports"... at first when i ran across it, and peeked inside, it looked really intimidating with the huge punching bags and the boxing ring... i didn't go in... but when i went again with a friend of mine, the guys at the desk were really really friendly, totally helpful, and welcoming, and they weren't trying to sell me on their gym, like some of the other gyms... no pressure to sign up, and it's only $10 to try it out... there is a good number of guys and girls, doing both boxing and Muay Thai kickboxing... their prices are good (better than some other places i've researched)... for a flat rate per month, you can go to as many (or as few) classes as you want, and you also have access to their weights and machines whenever the gym is open... you don't have to buy special gear unless you want to, cuz there's equipment for you there, just go in your regular gym clothes... and the time for the classes are totally geared towards the working person especially if you work close by... (at 5:30 and 6:30pm, M-F; and Sat's) the instructors are really qualified, and they push you hard, but you can go at your own pace, cool for super beginners (like me)... and there is quite a bit of individual attention even when the class size is high... if you want an intense, high impact, cardio workout in a friendly, supportive atmosphere, this is the place! read more

I've been a member of Pacific Ring Sports for several months now and it has been beyond my expectations. Before joining I had a history of weight lifting and long distance running including a half marathon. However, even after being pretty active, I have increased my strength, stamina, endurance, and balance more by training here than all my years doing intense weight lifting and running. My biggest props go to Jason who was the trainer that worked me out my first couple of visits to PRS. They have a policy of training new members in small groups before introducing them to the larger classes. Without the gentle introduction I wouldn't have had the confidence to stick with it. The atmosphere is serious but not condescending. It helps to find people at your level that come during your regular times and make sure to pair up with them during the class. read more

I have left messages and never get a response. I have emailed them only to get curt responses such as "Sorry we are not open for classes at this time". That was literally the email verbatim. There is no other information provided, no opening date NOTHING. The website has been updated with new scheduling information since then and I reached out to them again. it has been a week. I was looking for something to supplement the training I was already doing, and checked out a few places around the bay. One was kings boxing, the other was pacific ring sports. I was greeted at both locations right away, and felt welcome at both locations as well. I chose pacific ring because Muay Thai was a better match for the training I was already doing. It took me about 4 months from the first time I walked in their to the time I schedule my first class. Because I have had previous training, I was able to join the class, and the owner Mike was able to help me out with the technical parts of muay thai. The facility is a large place, with the usual bags, some weight equipment, and a full size ring. Not a lot of glitz and glamor, as this is a fighters gym with people who love to compete. If you have never had any experience with any type of martial art or training of any kind, no worries, as they have beginners start with an instructor off to the side. All of the instructors there are top notch. I was really looking to improve quickly, and the only way to do that is to get private lessons. Jason is the man when it comes to pushing you hard, but giving you knowledge from fighting experience. He is one of those guys that truly loves what he does, and has a passion for it. It's been almost 6 months since I started here, and I am very pleased with my time here. It's always a pleasure to go to class, and it ruins my day when I can't make it there. The gym is great. Good space, ample weights and bags. All the staff are really caring and friendly, and there is definitely a feel of a community. I was a member for 6 months in 2010, and wanted to come back here. The difference I see is that the muay thai and conditioning instructors are gone, otherwise the same people! (I haven't taken any Jiu-Jitsu or Yoga tho so don't know about those). And, more students... Regardless, there isn't a day I don't get any correction on what I am doing wrong when I attend a class. That is what I really like about being here, it feels like I'm learning! There is ONE shower stall in the female changing room, I'm guessing also one for the males. The gender ratio is about 6 to 1. The billing is restrictive. It demands commitment as you are locked into a contract regardless of how you want to pay - month to month or up front. Commitment and paying up front give you discounts. If you do month-to-month, the auto-charging is outsourced to a billing corporation and you have to give them 30-days notice to cancel your membership. read more

I've been a PRS member for a year. There are many reasons why I think it's great. Let's start with people. Mike and Alfie (the owners) are great. All of the trainers are great. Other members are great, too: Whether you're an absolute beginner or an aspiring pro, everyone else is supportive of whatever you want to accomplish. My primary activity is Muay Thai (kickboxing), now four times per week. I had never done martial arts, and I never before did anything as physically demanding. I love it! I had to give up running many years ago because of knee problems; kickboxing is the only activity I've done since then that gives me the same endorphin rush. I've taken a number of private lessons with Mike. He's great at pushing me hard, but not so hard as to cause an injury. I took the strength and conditioning class for several months early on to help me get into better shape for kickboxing. Very demanding, but very productive. I'd like to go back to it, but I just don't have the time to squeeze in another 2-3 classes per week. The gym is spacious (a former automotive garage) and comfortable. With a recent minor renovation, there is a display case for the staff's championship belts - pretty impressive! I guess that the most important thing is something that Alfie said to me early on: She and Mike see everyone there as part of their family. It's true - I feel totally welcome and valued at PRS, and I expect to maintain my membership for many years. read more

If you want to be packed into a hot, sardine can-like room, this is the place for you. No ongoing training on proper technique, no systematic training on sparring either. Way too expensive for the quality. Save your money, better off in a different gym. We did a year here, still regretting it two years down the road. read more

This is a fabulous gym. It is not only a great place to get a workout (an amazing workout), but the people who go are really nice to be around, and the owners and trainers give a good workout while always seeming to make it just the right level (pretty impressive in a class environment). I have been going here for around four years, and it is such an improvement over the place I trained previously, as well as over the mainstream gyms. It has a small-town feel in the middle of Oakland-- which I think is pretty impressive. I never feel like I am second to the guys, or to those who are training for actual fights. I am actually doing the same workouts. I also feel like, as I have gotten better and more experienced, my workouts have changed and I have been gradually brought to do different things. This has helped me to feel successful and avoid injury. This is an amazing place for Muay Thai training, and the boxing classes are good, and I hear the new strength conditioning classes are also tough and good. I just tried the new yoga class and it is AMAZING. The instructor really gears it toward the students as athletes and has a really comprehensive knowledge of the body and how its parts interact and how to make them work together better. If you are thinking about coming, I'd say do it. It has improved my life. read more

I've been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at this gym for about six years. Omar Kasdi, the BJJ/MMA/S&C coach is a great teacher for all ages and skill levels. There's also a good mix of training times, with both gi and nogi classes available. If you're considering training grappling in the area I highly recommend stopping by for a class. read more

I took a class here this past Monday because I've been wanting to take up boxing for awhile and I'm just looking for a great way to get into better shape. Byron was a great instructor and I was happy that he did one-on-one training with me. I'd love to join, but their membership is too much for my budget. If you are looking for a place to take up boxing, or another type of martial arts, and have the money, I would join Pacific Ring. And the staff, overall, is pretty friendly. Seriously one of the best Muay Thai/MMA gyms in the Bay Area. And I've trained at several. I started out here back in 2007 and trained for about a year but had to move to the South Bay. After moving around for almost 10 years I came back to where I started. I don't know how the business is sorted out but it feels like a partnership with an all-star group. Each of the coaches could go off and start their own gym but with all of them together the gym is like a super gym. read more

I have only been going for a month with my muy thai partner in crime, but this place is the bomb. A converted warehouse in downtown oakland that's only seconds from the freeway. Parking can be hard on certain days and times, and watch out for those damn meter maids! Mike and the trainers are super nice, friendly, and the workout is great. I want to try boxing, sparring and jiu jitsu some day. The rates are reasonable and for unlimited classes as well. Try this place, you will not regret it. read more

Excellent gym. Very clean place with a full ring/caged area and impressive weights and cardio section. My son is participating in the kids class. What a great way to condition the body and learn self defense techniques. The instructor is fully engaged and motivating. I have been training at PRS for two years now. Due to moving around the Bay Area this is the third gym and my favorite gym. It can be intimidating walking into a new gym, but PRS makes everyone feel right at home. The staff who run the gym are very personable and always willing to help. Their Muay Thai and Boxing trainers are great at what they do. If your are not into combat sports, I highly recommend the Strength and Conditioning classes. They are killer. People this place is awesome! I've only been here a little over a year but it's been rad. Coming in with very little martial arts training on the wrong side of my mid 40s, i've been impressed with the quality of instruction on a daily basis. Boxing, Strength & Conditioning and Muay Thai (Kick-Boxing) have been the main areas of focus for me. There is lots of flexibility in the schedule to accommodate whichever class i'm after. The vibe is cool, wide range of ages, gals & dudes, rocking tunes, but most important, everyone is focused on the work. And it is work. I feel better every time i complete my butt-kicking workout even if i'm pushed to the limit. Thanks a lot Omar! The gym is situated in a great location super close to MacArthur BART. They have all the necessary equipment & space for Boxing, Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai along with free-weights, lots of exercise equipment, pads, jump rope, medicine balls, bands and the gym is kept super clean. While there are many folks coming in with different levels of experience, the gym is extremely supportive of each member. I've been going to PRS since September and have loved every minute of it! I've been to a few other boxing gyms in the Bay Area over the years and this is by far the best one. Robert is an incredible instructor and has great attention to detail. He also has made an effort to get to know every individual in his classes, which is rare in my experience. What really makes Robert and the rest of the PRS staff amazing is their attentiveness - they walk around during drills and quickly correct you when something is wrong. While most other gyms I've been to seem to be focused on just going through the motions with their instruction, Robert will fix your technique as soon as he sees an error. To makes things even better, because he's developed a great relationship with his students, he knows your weaknesses and pushes you to work on them. You could end up training for a real fight one day if you really want to! I haven't really seen that at other gyms. Jay and his strength and conditioning class is a giant kick in the butt, but a good one. I always feel stronger after taking one of his classes. He's an incredible motivator and pushes you hard, but he makes you want to push as hard as possible. I prefer the morning boxing classes since there are fewer people there and you can get some more coaching from Robert then. All of the classes are great though, and they've developed an amazing community of people at PRS. Highly impressed with this gym and recommend to anybody! read more

I've been taking the muay thai classes there for a couple of weeks and I'm loving it. I went to Fairtex in SF a while back and it's very similar in format. Totally relaxed atmosphere and really friendly people. They have a good number of classes before, during and after work, so I can fit a class in every day. I'm looking forward to checking out the new location and trying out the yoga classes they'll offer. There's a wide range of skill & size in the classes, so you'll probably be able to match up with someone of similar ability. I've also noticed that many of the classes are about 40% women. It will get you in great shape and you'll have fun doing it. read more
