Came here after we visited the Tulum ruins. We got to Tulum super early in order to beat the crowds and the heat. Our private driver recommended eating here for breakfast.He told us anytime he knows he's driving to the ruins he knows where he's eating! So this place is amazing! They give so much food and the price is super low for the amount of food they give. They start you off with escabeche( pickled garlic, carrots, hot peppers). The coffee is yummy too! I had the huevo motuleños and wanna cry just thinking about how good they were. My husband got the desayuno azteca, but I think mine was better :) I want to come back again!!! read more

I loved this place sooooo much I came serveral times during my week stay in Tulum, Mexico. Do you love mole as much as I do? Then come here. They make the best in town. I ordered the poblano enchiladas and my friend ordered the mole con arroz y plátanos. Mmmm the plátanos are soooo delicious. On a second visit I ordered plátanos on the side, perfectly cooked with a side of crema. They have every kind of fresh aguas de fruta. We ordered the watermelon water, a full pitcher that they make fresh to order. Delicious and perfection for hydration, especially from overdrinking the night before (yup! We did!) But my favorite thing about this place was the escabache. It has a full elephant garlic along with carrots, chiles and papas. It wasn't spicy, but rather pickled. I loved it! I coulda had that with beers all day. Unique little botana, that's included with your chips. On a different visit, I ordered the fried flautas but show up as crispy tacos on the menu. Mexico knows how to make flautas! Oh ohhhhhh and one evening they had some romantic live music. He was a one man show on the keyboard singing "Sabor a Mi". We decided to share and the next day we ordered Chilaquiles con huevos y carne which wasn't on the menus. They start you off with tortilla chips and salsas but beware; they are spicy and very spicy (my kind of thing). I got shrimp tacos and my girlfriend got a steak/shrimp kabob. Oh how I missed my trusty Yelp app! With our phones not working in Mexico, we had to rely on a bakery for a recommendation on a good restaurant. They suggested Don Cafeto mentioning that it is popular with both the locals and tourists. The restaurant was empty when we walked in at 5 pm. After scanning the menu we ordered the Mexican platter. Though priced higher than most other items, it included several Mexican specialties. While we awaited our main course, a complimentary escabeche, a colorful bowl of zesty marinated vegetables, was placed on the table, along with chips and salsa. The escabeche was good. I particularly enjoyed the carrots and peppers while sipping on a cold Mexican beer I had never heard of before. The salsa was very, very spicy. After one try, most of my group decided to avoid it. The Mexican platter was large and looked impressive. However, it was completely devoid of all flavor. The front page of the menu advertises absolutamente sabroso (absolutely tasty). Based on this dish, a more accurate description would be absolutamente soso. Come here for the cold beer and the escabeche but stay away from the Mexican platter. read more

We only came here because it was one of the few restaurants open after a hurricane, had a good amount of people dining there already and a relatively short line for a table. The line unfortunately took 45 minutes and we were in and out in 20 mins. Some time while waiting on line, there was a panhandler that came by that posted up a foot's distance (did not wear a mask) from us to play his guitar for this European family sitting by the front of the open restaurant (they were the only ones super into it) and all but asked us to step off the line. It was rude and annoying and I'm not sure if he worked with the restaurant or if he was a random street performer. He walked right to the middle of the restaurant to plug in his amp to play for the diners and later walked around each table asking for a tip. Now for the food, it was pretty bland. I had the filet of fish w/ garlic and it came w/ some overcooked veggies, rice (not bad), and a little lettuce salad w/ a creamy dressing (dressing was good). There was also complimentary chips (heartbreakingly stale), salsa and a bowl of what looked like boiled vegetables (neither of us tried it) brought over to our table covered w/ plastic wrap. We skipped out on drinks and a food photoshoot (the plating of the food was barebones and food itself didn't look great) since we didn't want to stay longer than we had to. Price for food was moderate compared to the rest of the downtown area, there was no wifi, and there was plenty of parking on the side streets (bring a flashlight and walking buddy). I did notice these awesome giant fishbowl sized margs (bulldogs?) on some tables, looks like a great start to a night out if that's what you're looking for. read more

My husband and I came to Don Cafeto for breakfast. They have indoor and outdoor seating area, and after perusing the menu, we ordered one Mayan breakfast. This breakfast plate comes with cafe con leche, eggs, toasts with jam and butter on the side, a salad and orange juice. Though the plate looks small, it was sufficient for two of us. This restaurant came out to $17-18 per person USD, which is actually pretty pricey. That's culinary prices. This should have been about half that price, but alas tourist traps. My friend liked this place so much we went twice during our week long visit there. He saw the escabeche and wouldn't stop talking about it until we went. We showed up around 8 PM on a weekday - live music FTW! I had the mole enchiladas which I really enjoyed - some of the best mole I've ever had. My friend got the shrimp tacos which he really liked too. We went back a few days later for breakfast - we both got the Azteca breakfasts which were huge platters of food. Tasty coffee and juice too. We particularly liked the evening entertainment. I am certain it is probably similar from night to night but the two guys (one on keys, the other on bongos) singing. My wife really enjoyed the Mole' and my dinner was pretty good (not amazing, but good). what I enjoyed most was the bowl of various peppers they serve ahead of the meal. Be careful, some can be very hot. Look for the potatoe and grab it before anyone else does....you won't be sorry. It can be loud if you are near the cooking station with the exhaust fans blowing. You can certainly eat a bit cheaper in town but we've enjoyed the 3-4 times we've visited here over the past couple of years. read more

I also got melted cheese with tortilla and the melted cheese was pretty awesome kind of like Fondue. The ordered guacamole was not very seasoned and there was definitely quite a bit of lime missing.
