Clarksville, TN in the 1860's was a vital communication/transportation center for the Confederacy. It was a major producer of tobacco and agricultural goods but became an important source of iron (its local foundries producing cannon, artillery shells and musket balls for the Confederate army early in the war). Clarksville's location at the confluence of the Cumberland and Red Rivers made it a strategic point. The Confederates in preparing for the city's defense constructed Fort Sevier on a hill that commands the two rivers. On February 19, 1862, Union gunboats came up the river from Fort Donelson and reported the fort displayed a white flag and was left deserted. The Union took over the fort and enlarged it so that it would control traffic on the Hopkinsville (Kentucky) Pike. After the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, Clarksville became a Federal recruitment center for the induction of free blacks and former slaves into the Union service.

It transformed from a Federal Post Office to the Department of Electricity, and now a beautiful museum to showcase Clarksville's rich culture and history for all ages to enjoy. We enjoyed a group of self-guided and museum-guided tours that included story time, a craft activity, a scavenger hunt, and a plethora of hands-on educational fun. The kids enjoyed the interactive model trains exhibit, Explorer's Landing, and Art Studio. The museum curator gave us a personal tour of the property, and told us the history of Robert Penn Warren. Really interesting tour and person, and our host couldn't have been more kind. Make sure you make an appointment. However, there isn't a lot of traffic at this site, so if you just show up you're liable to be the only tour they'll give that day. Free tour, but they do take donations.

A few colleagues and I had lunch at The Place (great restaurant next door) then wandered here. The moment I walked in, I knew I liked it. As a matter of fact, I would like this anywhere, but being a little gem in downtown Hopkinsville made it that much more special. You can find jewelry, greeting cards, children's items, home items, some locally made items, art, and a variety of other items in this sweet store. The owner is apparently an artist, and I heard they also do painting classes in the studio as well. (The back portion of the space looked like a studio; the front space was more of a boutique/store.) The employees were so friendly. I believe I was talking to the mother of Griffin, while Griffin herself was further in the back working. It seemed as though they would gift wrap gifts; though most of what I bought was for myself. Without a doubt, make this a stop when you're in Hopkinsville! The strip it is on has some other neat looking stores (including an ice cream/candy shop), so you could even just do some window shopping if so desired. P.S. My one hope/suggestion would be for more clarity on where/who some of the art/jewelry comes from. For example, I bought this awesome bracelet, and I'd love to know who made it.

The overall feel leans towards a more female touch, but it has an appeal for anyone young or old. Locals should visit to see things the average gift or boutique store just will not have. People visiting from out of town should visit to see one of the more unique businesses in town that does not fall on the usual radar of area places to visit. You might have seen similar places in neighboring areas with art communities but this one has a one of a kind Hopkinsville feel to it.

Air-Conditioning! Yes! It's very hot today. Over 90 degrees and there are limited shady areas. However, go to the kids area. They have inflatables this year and it's all shaded! Hope you make it. Despite its small size, it is the only museum in Hopkinsville with African American history and Edgar Cayce exhibits. The $5 admission fee was satisfactory. Hillary and Alissa, the museum staff, were very nice and helpful. I greatly appreciated the museum kit provided to me with pencils, postcards, a recipe card, and museum tokens to use. The museum is very interactive and child friendly. I love reading the weird and wonderful facts exhibits throughout the museum about the goblins, the Nightriders, the blackbird invasion, and Blind Mary. The Edgar Cayce exhibit was my favorite. I spent most of my time there. If you go to the museum, make sure to write on a museum postcard there. The museum will provide the post card, a stamp, and mail it for you. One of the unique features of the museum is the blackbirds flying all over the museum and perched on random places all over the museum like the ladies bathroom. Membership is $25 and gives you a year full of free museum admissions and discounts. I may seriously consider buying membership.

My family is currently living in Hopkinsville, KY and we were there for two days this past week…read more So we decided to see what this place is all about historically and visit the Pennyroyal (pronounced Pennyrile) Museum, built in 1914. They have a gift shop and a small museum that is pretty spooky (awesome). If you are city folk like us looking to feel slightly uncomfortable in Christian County, then this place is only $2.00 per adult and open during most business hours. The main reason we wanted to visit was the Hopkinsville Goblins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly-Hopkinsville_encounter), documents sightings of alien in the area terrorizing a family on their farm. But, that is not the only main creepy feature for you: there is also turn of the century maternity ward equipment, Nightrider Masks, Puppeteer exhibit, and don't forget Edgar Cayce. All with a strange smell in a dark environment. I had no idea that there was so much cool stuff to come out of Hopkinsville. And, the downtown area is a must see, as well as the beautiful historical houses in the area. My favorite was actually the turn of the century bedroom set, looms, and fireplace in the upstairs portion of the building.

Maybe because I went to a matinee on a weekday, I wasn't searched. But I also brought a very small, clear bag that showed I was only carrying the bare essentials. The ticket prices (I saw two movies) are the lowest I've seen, around 12 bucks. I realize they are more expensive for evening shows, but this is still beyond reasonable. The theaters are large and the recliners are comfy. They have stadium seating and some theaters have partitions. They have swivel tables for food. In the beginning of the show, if you order at the concession stand, they'll bring your food to you. I had a couple of their drinks (yes, you can have cocktails while you watch). They are sugary and nothing spectacular, but that's okay. It's a theater staffed by high school and college aged students, not cocktail connoisseurs. I was hungry between movies, so I had some of their cheese fries. Again, okay. The fries themselves were hot and well seasoned, but I could have done without all the nacho cheese and ranch dressing (I realize that's the appeal for some people). For a large plate of cheese fries and a double shot drink, I paid about 38 bucks. Honestly, that isn't crazy to me given what I ordered. They also have popcorn, pretzels (which is what I wanted, but they were unable to make them that day), hotdogs, pizza, burgers. They also have places to sit in the lobby as well as a small table you can park at to eat. Everyone on staff was super nice and helpful. Some of them were very conversational about the films playing. The auditoriums were clean, as were the bathrooms. I am pleased with my experience here and think this was just the first of many matinees in my future.
