A good friend recommended this restaurant to me while I was in town, so I decided to try it out. I noticed it wasn't busy at all, and that could be due to the time (3 pm). My server, Karl, came to the table and greeted me. He was very polite and professional. I'm not used to being called "Sir" at these types of restaurants unless it's an upscale one, so that was different. He took my drink and food order after giving me time to lookover the menu. I ordered the Arroz Tejano, which consisted of chicken, shrimp, steak, grilled onions, and bell peppers on a bed of rice and cheese sauce. I substituted the steak with extra chicken. Meanwhile, he brought chips, salsa, and some other type of white sauce for them. The salsa, though good, was too spicy for my taste. Whatever the other sauce was, I did like it, though it had a bit of sweetness. Ultimately, I requested the cheese sauce, which came out a little runny and did not cling well to the chips, but it still tasted good. My food came out at a decent time, and not only did it smell good, but it also tasted better than I expected. The food was seasoned to perfection in my opinion and was reasonably priced. The food servers are pushy and impersonal. They do not want to spend more time with you than absolutely necessary, after she takes your order, she wants by the table and drop stuff off. She doesn't even stop. The food is lazily prepared, the same filling in everything that you order. No such thing as any vegetables, a burrito is meat sauce in a tortilla and enchilada is the same exact meat sauce in a tortilla they pour some kind of sauce all over everything, so nothing is edible with your hands. They only use one tortilla on their tacos, so the bottom falls out of everything. If you want Mexican, food in Roanoke Rapids, go to Taco Bell. Food was alright, but we did not feel special. It had the feel of a fast food restaurant. Looking around, the place was decorated, like a set on the home shopping network. LifeSize, coated plastic, woman in a period style dress and a man with a sombrero hat and a musical instrument, surrounded by fake cactus and the standard colors. Wow, it was almost as campy as taco hell, but the food was better. As for the food, it came out almost as fast as the drinks. This last Saturday manager Patty was so sweet to mop up & clear off the outside table after the rain storm so we could eat. The food is delicious & fresh. The portions are not huge but the price is very reasonable. My Arroz Con Carne was only $12.50. The margaritas are HUGE & a good value at only $9.99 for the house drink. The al pastor tacos are extraordinary. We were there at 2:00 p.m. on a Saturday and while it was busy a bit the service was great.

This was one of those "we will be on 95 at dinnertime; where can we eat?" choices. After too many days of ChickFilA while traveling, i was craving Mexican food. The 3.5 stars here gave me pause, but we were pretty desperate for food that was quick but not fast food. I'm so glad we stopped! First of all, the service was great. I didn't get our waiter's name, but he was a sweet young kid. He was conscientious and thorough though, repeating back our order to ensure it was correct. He cheerfully accepted all our weird requests a la Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally - "make the fajitas medium rare, no shells... no onions on the tacos... bring the tomatillo salsa but put it on the side...." And everything came out just as we had requested it! The fajitas got thumbs up from the picky tween. Hubby liked his #1 combo (chicken enchiladas and a chicken soft taco with beans). The salsa was delicious - apparently some people find it too spicy, but we thought it was perfect. The refried beans were made fresh, not canned. And my tacos al pastor? AMAZING. (Side note: 3 tacos stuffed full of pork and a side of charro beans cost me less than my CFA combo cost at lunch today!) If you like spicy, say yes to the tomatillo salsa that comes with the tacos. It's super spicy but I got it on the side and added a little at a time and it was perfect with the al pastor tacos! Delicious. I had the pollo super bravo. Its like a kitchen sink nachos but instead of tortilla chips its two big pieces of chicken breast smothered and I mean smothered with sausage or taco meat in a delicious chipotle sauce. Then it has huge pieces of bacon with peppers and onions. It was great. All for 15. I couldn't finish it so i took the rest home. I wasnt going to waste a gem like that. We tried a few other local restaurants but were told there was a wait, there were staffing issues, or there was a flat out lack of hustle and we stood waiting to be greeted while employees stood around looking at us or their phones. Don Juan was our last hope before we were gonna throw in the towel and get fast food. We were seated within 5 minutes on a Friday night, our server was friendly, and our food came out fast and delicious. You could tell these people take pride in providing a great service for a great price as opposed to the surrounding businesses. You may experience a slight language barrier but don't let that deter you from giving these hard working people your business. They deserve it. This place is a breath of fresh air in the seemingly endless "higher prices for poorer quality of service" scenario that has plagued our country. One of the challenges of a road trip is to avoid fast and processed foods. So, we were happy that there was a Mexican option very near our hotel that seemed to have good reviews and offer the basics of cheese, beans, rice and variations on the humble tortilla. In theory, it is hard to screw this cuisine up and there is no reason to load it with extra processing or filler. In theory. Our take-out order was easy to call-in and easy to pick up. So far, so good. I ordered the Veggie Combo C (Bean Burrito, Cheese Quesadilla, Potato Enchilada). There was little flavor to the burrito or the enchilada, and both were a rather limp and listless version of these famous foods. It seemed that the potato filling of the enchilada seemed to have been simply steamed into texture-less mush. That said, the quesadilla was fantastic. It was generously filled with both a standard melted Jack-style cheese and a soft, almost fluffy, queso fresco. The tortilla was nicely toasted (or very lightly fried). I wished I had ordered the Spinach Quesadilla, not the combo. It would have come with two pieces and a salad. As I finished eating for the evening and placed the leftovers into our room's mini-fridge, I would have put this restaurant at 3 stars and never bothered to write a review. HOWEVER... My spouse ordered the Combo #11 (Burrito, Taco and Enchilada --- all filled with standard ground beef). I cannot speak personally to the flavors or textures in these items. What I can personally attest to is the violent puking that I witnessed in the middle of the night as my husband ran from the bed to the bathroom where he spent the next few hours revisiting this meal.
