I used to be able to "draw in" eyefolds with sharp eyebrow scissors and keep those folds throughout the day with hard blinks, but as I got older, it became harder and harder to keep the fold, even with glue. At my consultation, Dr. Kim immediately started using his crease tool on my eyelids to try out different crease heights, making observations about my eye shape and differences in skin laxity between my eyes. Dr. Kim was the fifth surgeon I consulted with in LA and I chose him because I felt that he truly listened to me, is very patient, and has a good aesthetic eye. Right before the surgery, he spent a long time marking and remarking my eyelids until I was satisfied. During the procedure, Dr. Kim had the most delicate touch when administering local anesthesia. I was really nervous about what it would feel like to have needles going into my eyelids, but I barely felt a thing and that part was over in seconds. I was pleasantly surprised when he took the safety measure of slipping corneal eye shields on my eyeballs to protect them (zero discomfort), and asked me to open my eyes throughout the procedure to check on his work (just as they do in Korea). We ultimately decided to do slightly different crease heights on my eyes to address the saggier skin on the left one. My first week of recovery was such an emotional roller coaster because the left eye looked like a mountain compared to the right eye, but by the end of week two, 80% of the swelling was gone and both eyelids had settled nicely. Now, almost three months out, my eyefolds are amazingly symmetrical and are EXACTLY what I asked for. I had realistic but VERY specific expectations going in, and Dr. Kim delivered on creating the natural tapered eyefolds I asked for. Nobody can tell I had anything done. I went in person on a Saturday 2/1/20 to pay for it with my credit card. There was a young bilingual korean man (in his 30s) who took care of it. He gave me a small printed receipt not a formal one. I get another statement a few months later (the same bill) saying "2nd statement, please pay bill". I call the office during the week to talk to the billing person. I speak with an older lady and tell her that I've already paid this and I can show her my bank statement but I unfortunately do not have the receipt. I said I can come to the office and show it to her or email her, She said that's ok. She said the reason it wasn't recorded was because it was a Saturday and the billing person is not there Saturday and the young man did not record it correctly. Now 9 months later, I get another bill saying "3rd (last) statement. Please, make a payment." I don't really think they're trying get more money from me than necessary but this shows a lack of organization and unnecessary trouble for their issue with bookkeeping. Below is my bank statement. Now stop bothering me. As much as Dr. Ed is a great MD, I won't come again. If you're going to pay, never pay on a Saturday.

I'm three weeks post-op from my breast augmentation performed by Dr. Kahng, scheduled and coordinated by the lovely Maritza, and cared for by a darling staff of nurses. I chose him because of his work on body types similar to mine, I am lean and athletic with very minimal breast tissue and have a long narrow torso. One detail that stood out to me was that I saw that he takes great care of nipple placement, which was important to me because I saw many other surgeons' works with disregard for that aesthetic. After seven months of research, I went to two consultations. I picked Dr. Kahng after careful reflection for his candor and demeanor during my consult. Maritza was in the room with me, which made me feel safe and comforted meeting with and undressing in front of the doctor (Yes, I know it's his job, but I'm a 24yo and can feel nervous alone with men... it felt like having a mom in the room with me when I was a child getting a checkup... I liked that feeling). The nurses have been a pleasure. I've come for four early mornings and they've all greeted me heartily with smiles and laughter. I've contended with anxiety all my life but they put me at such ease every time I see them for check ups-- thank you. In previous consults, when I asked about breastfeeding, possible complications, closing the gap in my visible sternum- I was given enthusiastic yeses! Everything is possible! Nothing can go wrong! But Dr. Kahng had a more reliable and sophisticated demeanor. He was down to earth, but never hesitated to tell me an answer I might not want to hear. His honesty was appreciated far more than any people-pleasing enthusiasm. I actually saw a negative review about his attitude but... it made me want to choose him because I knew he would be honest and direct with me. My augmentation went through smoothly, I did ask for the biggest size my body could fit (350cc) and he told me it might not be possible- but that he would try. He succeeded. I would say the pain was difficult at first, the tightness and stretching, the one hour car-ride home (and back for checkups the first week) But I got through it, and I'm beyond ecstatic about my result. The healing has gone very well, and I was warned amply about potential complications and risks, but I've felt well-cared for and monitored closely by the team at Cara. However, when it came time to sign the preoperative consent documents, I discovered that the written description did not accurately reflect what we had previously discussed and agreed upon. In my experience, patients were not given adequate time before surgery to carefully read, question, and fully understand these important documents. Another thing that concerned me was the payment process. The deposit I paid before surgery was not accepted by credit card. Looking back, I wish I had questioned every aspect of the process much more carefully before proceeding. But none of this compares with what happened to me after the surgery. I underwent this procedure while I was still in my 30s. Within approximately one year after the surgery, I felt that my face had aged dramatically. I developed severe changes that I had never expected: wrinkles and abnormal changes appeared around my nose, chin, forehead, and other areas of my face. I felt as though I had aged 20 years. I believe these changes were directly related to the surgery performed by Dr. David Kahng. The physical, emotional, and financial consequences have been enormous. Since that surgery, I have spent approximately $100,000 trying to repair the damage. Even after multiple attempts at correction, I am still dealing with the consequences today. What has made this experience even more disturbing to me is what happened afterward. Instead of receiving what I considered meaningful accountability or compensation, I received correspondence that I interpreted as threatening me with defamation claims. I was already dealing with the consequences of a surgery that I believed had seriously harmed me, and then I felt that I was being intimidated for speaking about what happened. I also strongly dispute portions of the medical records created by Dr. Kahng's office. In my opinion, certain statements in those records do not accurately describe what occurred. I believe these discrepancies deserve independent investigation, particularly when the records are compared with the preoperative discussions, photographs, communications, surgical documents, and my subsequent medical history. I filed complaints because I believed what happened to me warranted serious investigation. My experience with the California medical regulatory system left me deeply disappointed. I felt that my evidence and concerns were not adequately addressed and that the system failed to provide meaningful accountability. A patient should have the right to know exactly what operation will be performed before entering an operating room. A surgeon's written surgical plan should accurately reflect what was discussed and agreed upon. Patients should have adequate time to read consent documents. Medical records should accurately document what happened. And when a patient alleges serious injury, those allegations should be investigated fairly and independently. I cannot determine criminal or professional liability--that is for the appropriate authorities and courts to decide. But based on what happened to me, I believe Dr. David Kahng's treatment of my case, his surgical decisions, the disputed documentation, and his office's conduct afterward deserve serious scrutiny. I want the appropriate authorities to investigate the entire record, including the consent documents, the surgical plan, operative records, photographs, communications, subsequent revision procedures, and the correspondence I received after I complained. If an independent investigation determines that laws or professional standards were violated, then I believe the consequences should be serious and proportionate--including professional discipline, suspension or revocation of a medical license where warranted, financial accountability for injured patients, and any other penalties authorized by law. I am writing this because I wish someone had warned me before my surgery. My life was profoundly changed by this experience. I have spent years trying to repair the damage and approximately $100,000 in the process, and I am still not fully repaired. Anyone considering surgery at CARA Plastic Surgery or with Dr. David Kahng should do extensive independent research, obtain copies of every document, make sure the written surgical plan exactly matches what was discussed, read every consent form before the day of surgery whenever possible, keep copies of photographs and communications, and seek an independent second opinion before proceeding.
