She was efficient, checked up on us, kept our drinks full and even showed how considerate she is. I was having a hard time hearing her and as I apologized and told her I'm deaf in my left ear, she started approaching the table from the other side. I truly appreciated that kind and thoughtful gesture. The food was delicious as always.

You'll find breakfast cocktails, homemade biscuits, breakfast comfort food as well as flat screen T.V.s and friendly service rounding out your experience. Today I opted for the server recommended Freebird Benedict, $15, and I enjoyed their creative take on the classic Eggs Benedict. This creative breakfast entree features their biscuit- split with fried chicken, poached egg and topped with their chicken sausage gravy. Definitely a big breakfast and shareable! Loved the tender biscuit, the crunch of the fried chicken and the savory flavorful chicken sausage gravy! The side of seasoned Moon Dust potatoes were great, too. I look forward to returning and trying their French Toast, Pancakes or a plain, yummy biscuit!

Because of the intense Alabama heat, we chose to sit inside, though they have a really nice screened-in patio available. The restaurant is intimate but well laid out, featuring a couple of distinct dining areas and a bar. Since it was our first time, our server, Daniella, recommended the candied bacon bombs to start. They came with a side of cheese curds, and both were absolutely delicious. Even as small as the curds were, they had a perfect cheese pull! For our mains, I ordered the cowboy burger with an added egg and a side of sweet potato fries, while my son chose the shrimp and grits. My burger was incredible, a solid 9.5 out of 10. My son rated his shrimp and grits a 7, though he has a lot of experience with that dish to compare it to. Daniella provided fantastic service, checking in at just the right times without hovering. I later realized I forgot to ask if they do anything special for birthdays, but honestly, my son was probably glad I forgot! Overall, it was a great meal, excellent service, and a very cool environment.

Cheese with turnip greens and smoked sausage. Yum! The candied bacon bombs were delicious too. The appetizers were enough to get me full but to go I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap and my friend ordered the blackened chicken pasta. She said it was tasty but it needed more sauce. Overall this place was a 10/10. Lively with great staff really makes this place a gem. I will definitely be back.

She was quirky, fun, and knew the menu! The food was great, it was exactly the way you want these classics to taste. It was fresh, flavorful, and the prices per portion were just right. The house Greek salad dressing was so good I would drink it if I could. I wish I could buy it or find a recipe, I would eat salad every meal. The restaurant is historic and has all the vibes of a classic eatery that make you feel good. We loved it, best meal I've had in a long while. Fortunately, this is a big restaurant and I had reservations! The decor in here is very old chic. It reminded me of my dad's favorite Italian restaurant in South Philly. He would love it here. We were seated fairly quick and provided with menus including a summer cocktail menu. I got a peach martini which was fabulous. Hubby ordered a banana breeze cocktail but they were out of banana liquor. He was bummed. Instead he got the strawberry Long Island iced tea. I tasted it and it was really good. We ordered our entrees which came with a salad or gumbo. I got the gumbo. It was sooo good. I enjoyed every bite. For my entree I got the Texas special which has the Greek steak, chicken and the seafood au gratin. All of it was delicious. I loved everything. Highly recommend especially if you want to try a little of everything. Of course, we had to get dessert. I had to try the baklava cheesecake since that seemed to be popular. Hubby got the chocolate almond pie. Hubby's was really really good. Mine was interesting for sure. Hubby tried it and said it tasted like pumpkin and he was right! Normally I love pumpkin but I didn't love this. It was okay. I just wouldn't get it again. Service was great. Lots of people coming around refilling drinks, bringing food, taking away plates, etc. we will be back for sure!

Which is why I ultimately went. My son was able to get his pancake fix in. My husband his fried chicken fix. We were all satisfied here.

Let me start with the good for my Metro Diner pick up order (placed one online and one through…read moreDoorDash): Order was ready on time The hostess in the bright green shirt at the front was very friendly and assisted me quickly Chicken tenders, creole mustard, green beans and fries were the star of the show today. I haven't had their chicken tenders before, but now realize I prefer it over the standard fried chicken solely because the flavor profile is better (more seasoned). I would order this again. Salad for my steak tips was as expected. I also redeemed a birthday reward for the chocolate cake. The bite I took was pretty good and it is easily a sharable portion size. Now for the not so good... My order through metro diners website consisted of steak tips, mash&gravy, garden salad with ranch. I personally would not order this again. Issue: The steak was chewy, flavor was bland and portion size seemed small for the value. My DoorDash order consisted of 1. Bissell breakfast with pancakes, scrambled eggs, cheese grits, bacon and a biscuit. 2. Small sausage gravy side 3. Chicken tenders plate with creole mustard, green beans and French fries. Issue: I quickly glanced through the see through lid of the boxes and noticed toast instead of a biscuit and no container that would have had the cheese grits. Went inside to notify the team and expo of missing items (also brought the bag back in). The expo called for these missing items from the kitchen. The cook glanced and then asked if he had a ticket for that? I managed restaurants for years so I get it when the kitchen asks this, however, the ticket was the one you made incorrectly and the expo did not check for correctness. The expo also stated "it is for a DoorDash order that she said is wrong". I'm happy this was a personal order because I got to see firsthand how it appears DD order issues are dismissed since they seemed to assume I was a driver. At least that is how the short exchange presented. They weren't rude it was the tone and lack of apology for my missing items. Mistakes happen. How you respond to and handle them matters. Fast forward - I get home and realize they must have simply switched my order with someone else's. There were hash browns with cheese and diced tomatoes and scrambled eggs with cheese. Was not my order and could not eat this order. The pancakes were just okay. Tried the sausage gravy with the biscuit. Not something I would get again but this part isn't a reflection of Metro Diner. Ordered this just to try it since many rave about this southern combo. Let's just say there will be more for everyone else to enjoy.

Our waiter, Hudson, was friendly throughout the meal and did a good job providing recommendations and suggestions. I ordered the 3-Piece White Meat Plate with two breasts and a wing, along with baked beans and coleslaw. I also ordered a side of the Sweet Heat sauce for dipping. My wife ordered the Fried Mississippi Catfish with fries and coleslaw, along with jalapeño hush puppies. The fried chicken and catfish were the stars of the meal. Both came out piping hot, crispy, and well seasoned. My chicken had plenty of flavor to stand on its own, but the Sweet Heat sauce complemented it nicely and added another layer of flavor without overpowering the chicken. The French fries were excellent and easily the best side. Crispy, hot, and exactly how fries should arrive. The remaining sides didn't reach the same level. We both found the vinegar-and-mayo coleslaw somewhere between average and below average. I felt about the same about my baked beans. My wife thought the jalapeño hush puppies were average. If you want excellent hush puppies, Shrimp & Co. in Hueytown remains our standard. Both of our meals were also served with a thick slice of white bread, which fit the simple, down-home presentation. This was our second or third visit to Champy's, and the food that matters most has been excellent each time. The sides may be hit or miss, but they know how to fry some chicken and catfish. Come for the chicken and catfish, definitely get the fries, and consider the other sides supporting players.
