Dry Dock Bar And Grill Dooleys Hotel - Sunday roast beef with mash and vegetables

First night I had a seafood combo: the seafood chowder, and the baked John Dory special with mash, fennels and potatoes. The seafood chowder had rich and velvety texture, great flavor profile, and generous portions of assorted seafood. All tasted fresh with bouncy texture, but some of the mussels could use a bit more cleaning. Baked John Dory was a great dish. The fillet was baked to perfection, with briny and refreshing taste, spot-on moisture, and silky mouthfeel. The mash and the potatoes were great addition to the dish. My only wish was to replace the fennels with something more refreshing and less dry. Second night I had the roast beef. Portion size was HUGE for the price. Taste was good, very moist beef with rich gravy. Wish they could have seasoned the vegetables a bit more. Overall, a good restaurant, reasonably priced, convenient for hotel residents. Also the bar was not bad with a nice range of spirits line up.

The soup of the day was supposed to be a beef soup, but it was more creamy rather than a broth, and had no resemblance to beef. It was still good, but I couldn't decipher the ingredients. I had the Supreme Chicken, which was tasty, but I wasn't a fan of the sausage slice that came with it. It just didn't seem to go with the rest of the dish. I could have used more gravy because the chicken was a bit dry. Since we were a large group on the excursion, I didn't ask for more since the servers were very busy. For dessert, we had crumble cake served with crème anglaise & vanilla ice cream. In my opinion, it was very dry, despite the ice cream.

Not only that, children and groups of people congregated in the hallways into the "wee" hours. This is literally our only complaint, but dang...like what the heck? - Waterford was our first stop after more than 24 hours of travel...we were really feeling the jet lag and were looking forward to getting sleep so that we could adjust. Trying to stay asleep with the constant noise was basically impossible. (Maybe it was like this because we arrived on Friday and stayed through to Saturday?) Other than that, like I said the place is nice and clean. The staff is nice. The location is excellent. Just know that you will hear EVERYTHING. Just know what you are getting into!

Love the Irish Hospitality. The people at the front desk gave us recommendations and helped us plan our few days there. Rooms : Rooms were large and clean. The bathrooms were large and clean too. We stayed in a triple bedroom as we were three girls and we had plenty of room for our luggage as well. Breakfast : the buffet breakfast was fabulous! It had Irish specialities as well as other things. Fresh fruit and yogurt, cereal, bread... name it and it was there. Bar : the bar had live music the days we were there and it was nice to be able to enjoy a few Guinness and just walk upstairs to the room. Overall, if I ever go back to Waterford, Dooley's is the place I would pick.

Can you imagine taking a ferry from the town of Waterford to "the island" without even getting out of your car, then drive the roads that are lined with trees while looking at all wonderful scenery & foliage only to land in front of this spectacular castle where you would be spending the night (or more if you're lucky!)? Let me just say it's pretty wild & if you can afford it, even for one night as I did, I would do it as it's a once in a lifetime thing! Now there are 2 types of accommodations at the Waterford Castle. The castle itself & the "lodge" which is not physically attached to the castle, it's just a tad bit down the road but it is still eloquent in its own right. It's additional accommodations to the castle. My review will be based on the "castle" as that is where we stayed & loved it!! First off, accommodations are not cheap, whether it be the castle or lodge. But with that said the castle is the epitome of elegance & luxury! And to me, this is a once in a lifetime experience so go big or go home! When you drive up & walk through the castle doors you feel like you've found paradise & are about to fall back into time. But when you enter your room (and each room has its own name & is unique in its own way) you know you're in Heaven. The beds are large, comfy & fluffy, when you walk in you'll notice a chocolate on each pillow, the room was huge! They had an armoire for storing your clothing, TV, windows to open, chairs to relax in & the bathroom...OMG I loved the pull chain on the toilet! Too funny! And the huge bear claw tub - to die for!! We arrived later in the evening & the dining room was just getting ready to close for new service (5 or 10 minutes left), however the person who was checking us in at the front desk said that he would tell them we were coming. This allowed us to be escorted to our room with our luggage as well allow me to park my car in the appropriate area (you can park in front of the castle to check-in, unload your luggage, etc., but have to move it for long term which is just a very short walk). And I must say that out of all the places I've had the pleasure of staying at in Ireland, Paris & Rome, this was the only place that had wash clothes in the bathroom. What can I say, small things like this make me happy. The Munster Room Restaurant was spectacular, this is what fine dining is all about! I really wanted to take pictures of the dining room & our food but my daughter was a tad bit embarrassed. Ok, she was thoroughly embarrassed & said no one else was doing it so I shouldn't (There were only 2 other tables with 2 people at each, but it was the end of the dining time so I'm sure there were probably more earlier). I did manage to get a few shots of the room we were dining in as well as 1 picture of our dessert but that's it. There was a pianist playing lovely music, after he left they scrolled through some channels of music, one of which had the Bee Gee's singing Stayin' Alive...I almost told them to go back to that station. ha ha Eating in the dining room is 60 EU each person, it's a 5 course meal & is fabulous! They do have room service but from what they told me the selection is limited. The breakfast was good & served in a different dining room from dinner. There are several things laid out for you to serve yourself (juice, coffee, fruit, muffins, etc.) & then there is a menu with main course so to speak to choose from (Irish Breakfast, Eggs Benedict, omelets, etc.). Now after being seated it took quite a while before anyone even bothered to ask us if we were ready to order (15 minutes or so) but we did notice that they were quick to attend to other guests who were seated way after us. Not sure what was up with that. When they finally came to take our order my daughter ordered Eggs Benedict & I ordered an omelet with no cheese. The food arrived in a decent amount of time but when I cut into my omelet it was oozing with cheese & didn't even have what I asked for on the inside of the omelet (completely different omelet). I had a hard time trying to flag someone down as the person that took our order was nowhere to be found. Finally got the attention of a gentleman who took the omelet back. Sadly it took so long for the correct omelet to make its appearance at our table that my daughter had already finished her meal. She loved her Eggs Benedict, my omelet tasted ok but I was just disappointed in the service from start to finish in the dining room for breakfast. This would be a 5 star review however, with the breakfast fiasco I took away 1/2 a star so I consider this a 4-1/2 review. All-in-all this was a fabulous experience & I am glad we got to spend one night here (wish it were more to so we could explore). The place was clean, organized, the staff was great & pleasant. This is definitely a must for those traveling to Waterford.

There was a line there with a few people as we ordered and retrieved our own beverages, but it was nice to have a bar to ourselves. The food was very good, but I remember vividly my girlfriend asked for her bacon to be cooked well and when they brought it out and it wasn't to her likening, the server replied, "What, you won't eat it like this?" To which, my girlfriend replied, "No." We had a bit of a chuckle about it later as I guess the waitress was pretty perturbed that she had to instruct the cook to fry it longer. There is a favorite bread around these parts called, Blaa. I have included a picture of it. Description from Wiki - A blaa /bl/, or Waterford Blaa, is a doughy, white bread bun (roll) speciality, particularly associated with Waterford, Ireland.[1] It is currently made in County Waterford and south County Kilkenny. The Blaa was soft and delish. I have also added a pic of the Blaa at the local market. Final thoughts, the hotel is a bit dated and older, but I was impressed with the food. All in all, I was happy with the hotel. As always people SYOY!!!

We were only there for one night and one breakfast, but it made such an impression. The building and grounds were gorgeous, and the family (including dogs) were warm and courteous. The rooms are large (especially the master suite) and tastefully decorated. The bathrooms are vintage but comfortable (though the towels could be fluffier). We didn't have time to explore the entire hotel and grounds due to time constraints, but the portions I saw were all well maintained. The best part though were the human and canine hosts. The lady of the house served our breakfast and gave recommendations on things to do before making our way to Dublin later that evening. The master of the house introduced us to the dogs and displayed just the right amount of his gift of gab. If we didn't hold up our end of the conversation, I hope he understands it was jet lag, not American manners. The dogs, Bubbles (small black) and Ben (yellow lab), were a bonus for our group of animal lovers. They were friendly greeters but were also content to relax or play together under the shade in the grass. The scene of the two of them on a sunny, breezy day in mid-June was the definition of relaxation. I thought of them again during our trip at times of travel stress (flat tire, cancelled flights, etc.). It was nice to think that regardless of the momentary chaos, there was a place a few hours away where two dogs enjoy idyllic country life with no such stress. Luck of the Irish dogs, I guess.
