Jane's Kitchen

Janes kitchen has proven to be the last word in greatness for us. My wife and I met with Jane and…read moreher husband in their cafe for a consultation on catering for our wedding. From the very start they were nothing but helpful. The range of choices for starters, mains and deserts was second to none, but that wasn't even the best bit (I'll come back to that). Throughout jane was able to tailor the service very well to what we would like while keeping it within our budget. The ideas and suggestions were great and for the day we ended up with a better menu than we were likely to have come up with on our own. The best bit........ On the day itself everything came together just as they said it would, the service was excellent and the staff could not have been nicer. There were no problems from start to finish but I get the impression that if there had been they'd have taken it in their stride too. The food itself was the star of the service. Everything and I mean everything was amazing. The great thing was we picked a few choices that we weren't sure some of the older family members would like, but they gave them a go and low and behold (even my dad) liked everything. (To understand what a compliment that is think Peter Kay and the cheese cake sketch). I don't usually write such gushing reviews but Jane and David and all their lovely staff helped make the day the special event that we hoped for.

Clean, fresh, warm and welcoming with a huge choice, a good sized portion and a very decent price. The shop itself reminds me of a French deli with all the gorgeous cheeses on display and the shelves which are home to dips, spreads and chutneys! Seriously this is my kind of place! I once had a white chocolate cheesecake in here many moons ago and the image and taste are well engraved in my memory - it looked like something out of a magazine and the taste was thick, creamy yet melting and amazing. I sound like a freak but I will never forget it - haven't tasted one like it since. I can't rave about this place and the food enough - just go, you'll love it!

I really think this hotel should be better than it is. I also think that it isn't a big ask to…read moreexpect it to be much better either. It's been many years since we've been here because we found the food fairly poor. We had no reason to go back until we booked massages in the rented out spa there via a Groupon deal. We arrived early so we decided to have coffee. I wouldn't order food. So I ordered a flat white and a cappuccino (£4.80) and I say with certainty that what I had served up was not a flat white. Not even close. It was poor tasting too. This is what I mean about my recall of my experience in this place time and again. I was hoping for a great tasting coffee. I had paid for a great tasting coffee. I wanted to be impressed but yet again they really just confirmed my old memory offering the least effort, with little attention to detail yet the maximum charge. The service was haphazard and somewhat slow. I wasn't offered a loyalty card despite them sitting on the counter. Mind you this place is open a long time and the reception area was full of customers so they aren't short of trade. Maybe that's why they are complacent. Finally as my iPhone was near out of power I asked at reception for the loan of a charger. I explained that we were there for massages and would be there at least two hours. The friendly receptionist said she had just one so I had to leave my phone at reception to be charged; it was like handing over a limb. I didn't want to do it but if I hadn't done so I'd be left with a phone with no power. Not surprisingly we are very unlikely to return at all.

The food was nice enough. Good sized portions, tasty - mum loved her fish and chips. But after a lengthy wait to flag someone down for the child's ice cream and the bill I had to walk up and pay, child lost patience, not even the bribe of ice cream worked. Even when I checked out (at the front desk cause they only have one card reader) the girls had a talk between themselves and ignored me. Service and personality is everything. This place has none.

Rice also good with a lime and pear chutney. Only let down was the naan which was very shop bought! On to pudding! I shared the apple creme brûlée with cinnamon doughnuts and caramel ice cream and the pecan and choco brownie with coulis and vanilla ice cream. Amazing and also massive portions I've come away completely full! Would recommend if have to stay in area but as on work trip and not much atmosphere couldn't give it more than 3*

So we went here and both of us had battered fish one with champ (mashed potatoes with spring onions) and one with chips (£8.50). Both were served with a smear of mushy peas and a small salad. The cod was superb, it was fresh and a good portion with a lovely light crisp batter. The mash was pretty good and while the chips were ok I suspect they are pre made and bought in. Really home made would have added a star. We had beer and a sparkling water. The service was ace and we had comfy seating. It's important to remember the price here as it's good value; I've been charged as much and sometimes more in a takeaway. Another tip; battered cod and chips with fino sherry is amazing. Like nowhere else I have been (in this life, when i was a 1920s burlesque dancer in my previous life I would have frequented places like this all the time) Where can I begin, its a higgledy piggaldy mish mash of rooms added on to other rooms, hidden staircases, faux doors and a dizzying arrangement of floral patterns. Food is like a seaside bed and breakfast, luke warm and miserable, service slow and not overly friendly. I would usually recommend this sort of place to Grannies and Granddads, but it doesn't even make it near the quality of a place that i would bring somebody i liked. Not to be repeated or recommended

The family that runs the hotel treats you like you are a guest in their home; incredibly accommodating with everything from food - I'm vegetarian and others had gluten allergies, to a staff member who used her own phone to call the taxi company I used in Belfast to get my sunglasses back. So much of what you get in the states is processed, but here everything is locally sourced. It's amazing that we didn't gain weight. The menu is possibly a tad old fashioned however I've always enjoyed any meal I've had here. The nachos, garlic mushrooms and garlic potatoes are delicious if you just want a snack or a few bowls of food to share with friends over drinks. I'm also always impressed with their wine - having tried glasses of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio I've found it always excellent quality, which isn't the case with a lot of hotel bars. However if you visit Charlemont you really should try their downstairs Turners Bistro restaurant which is very different to the rest of the hotel. It's much more modern in atmosphere and serves scrumptious food which is 5 star quality. I've eaten in it a few times and always love it - they do an awesome vegetable crumble and the wine selection is great. A highlight is the Gourmet Night - I have been to one (Italian themed - however each night is themed differently) but do plan to go to many more as I had the most amazing night. Five courses of truly outstanding food and accompanying wines - absolutely scrumptious. A beautiful night (very reasonably priced) and the service was impeccable. Better food than I've had in many other cities around the world. Can't praise this place enough - the people of Armagh are extremely lucky to have this gem of a restaurant! So in fairness I'd probably rate Charlemont Hotel a 4 but Turners Bistro is a definite 5 stars for me.
