I came to Dorca's because I needed to get a bridesmaid dress altered. Dorca's has been around forever, I actually got my homecoming dress altered here when I was in high-school- crazy! I brought the dress in and just needed to get a few inches off the bottom and shorten the straps at the top. She gave me a 3 week turnaround. 3 weeks later I went to pick it up and it fit perfectly! I brought my wedding dress in here to get altered. They did a good job shrinking my dress down about four sizes. Unfortunately the place I bought my dress recommended the larger size to order because while you can go smaller you can't go bigger. Because of this my dress ended up swallowing me, especially since I lost quite a bit of weight. Luckily my dress was altered to fit me a lot better. I used to love coming here to get alterations. Recently however I noticed her prices were three times what they used to be and I was mortified when it came time to pay... I HIGHLY recommend you ask the cost of repair on your garments BEFORE you pay. And be very specific with what you want done to each garment. She gave me a price then input it as $7 more on the machine than was I was originally told... If you're going to include taxes, say so... I will likely never come back as I feel I was taken advantage of and overcharged without consent. My clothes were also mediocrely done so the price I paid was NOT worth the repair. read more

Well, I wasn't going to write a review, until I looked closely at my wedding dress the night before my wedding. Dorca's was recommended to me for alterations. I brought my wedding dress in, just looking for a simple hem, take in at the waist, and bustle. I was charged $500. I was pretty mindblown because my dress is sheath fit and minimal layers. Being in a time crunch I paid the $500. The first time I came back to try my dress on, she took it in way too much, being a v-cut, my boobs were popping out and the waist was bunching. She said she would let it out. The second time (two weeks later) only the waist was let out, my boobs were still falling out. The third time I came to try it on, it finally fit again. I came back after two more weeks to pick up the dress. The day I picked up my dress, she told me she didn't even need to steam it (that comes with the $500), I should have inspected more closely. The night before my wedding, my mom looked at the dress, the under layer was pretty wrinkled, no big deal, what we found as we ironed it WAS a big deal. The seams where she had temporarily stitched when she made it too small were still creased all along the side with the stitching holes visible. She didn't even take the time to iron those out. I felt something hard in my dress, she had sewn a large pin INSIDE my dress!!! I couldn't get it out completely. I had to poke the pin out of the fabric and use wire cutters. The yellow pin ball is still in my dress. The seams look like a 10 year old sewed them. The cutting along my lace trim is jagged. Let me emphasize JAGGED. I was APPALLED. My mother was more appalled. I took about 20 pictures of errors we kept finding. I could not believe this place has good reviews. She was super sweet, and could tell I was stressed every time I came back and my dress still wasn't right. I thought she fixed everything so I was content and was going to let it go. I'm disgusted I paid $500 for such a sloppy job on my $2,200 gown. read more

Has to have a costume made. I gave her the design, bought al the fabric and they measured me up. Costume fit perfectly when I came to pick it up. I didn't even know what to do with the sequins I bought and she placed them perfectly on her own. I was worried that maybe something would get missed but she was a pro and designed it herself. Dorcas's is great. I bought a tuxedo on Black Friday and finally decided to get it altered. I wasn't about to just take it to a random alterations tailor though. (Shouts to the Yelpers who pioneered a path to this business.) Despite such reviews from fellow Yelpers, I had to test the product. I brought a random jacket and pair of pants that needed alterations anyway. Her fitting alone made me feel confident about getting my threads serviced with her. She took in the back of my jacket and fixed the length of my pants for just under $50. (It's up to you to compare the price bc I don't get my clothes altered that often.) When I went back to pick up my clothes, they were fitted perfectly! Like I said, I was confident in her ability. I actually already had my tux in the car knowing that I was going to have to fit it. She tries to honor her time commitments with her customers as she insists I choose a date for pick-up. Lucky for her, I haven't really been pressed for time with alterations so she can take her time with my clothes. I had a bridesmaid's dress that needed several alterations (bust, waist, hips, length). There was wiring in the front of the dress to keep the shape, so I wanted to take it to someone who was experienced and would do a good job. I was debating between Dorcas's and Angel Custom Tailors, but based on the number of reviews and the appearance that Dorcas seems to specialize in formal wear, I went with Dorcas. I went in first thing on a Saturday, and Dorcas herself had me try on the dress and pin everything together. She was very friendly and seemed very professional. Dorcas quoted me at $70 (the dress cost $100) and it was a little more than what I wanted to spend, but I didn't mind as long as it was done right. I returned the next Saturday to try on the dress. Everything was done except for the bottom hem which worked out because I wanted it to be a little shorter than what she had cut. Dorcas said it would be ready on Tuesday. I told her that I wouldn't be able to come back until the following Saturday as I can't come on a weekday due to work and I don't live nearby; she said that was fine. Again, I returned the following Saturday. I went first thing in the morning, and the dress was not ready. I was asked to return later that day, but I had other plans so I would have to come back next Saturday. However, the business was planning to be closed the next weekend. I was then told to wait and that they would finish it right now. This was not something I wanted to hear because I didn't want them rushing through it. Nonetheless, I waited as I did not want to come back in two weeks and I did not want my drive out there to be in vain. Dorcas came back out with my dress. The store was too busy for me to try it on and by then, I had somewhere else I needed to be anyway. Upon returning home, I found that my original hanger had been swapped out for a disposable plastic one and there's a small dark stain on the back of the dress. While the alterations were professionally done and the dress fits better than it did than when I first got it, I now have to spend extra time and money to take my dress to the dry cleaners (and hope that nothing goes wrong there). I can't say "Yay, I'm a fan," and I can't say that I've experienced better as I have never had a formal dress altered before, but I will probably explore other options the next time I need something altered. read more

I am so glad that I went here. It only took three trips to have my wedding dress shortened, to have the top taken in, to alter the straps, to have it bustled, etc. Not only was the work perfect but Dorca went out of her way for me. My dress was being altered during Irma, remember how we had absolutely no idea what was going to happen?? The shop was closed but Dorca opened to give me my dress to keep safe during the storm. Although the storm came and went, the gesture meant so much to me. Especially when people were fleeing the state! I would recommend this place to absolutely everyone. I had a wonderful experience at Dorcas. I had several dress pants that needed to be altered, plus a handmade evening gown with very heavy beading/stone work. Her alterations to the pants were the best I have ever had. I was worried that she wouldn't be able to do much with the dress because of the beading, but I underestimated her skills. She was able to cinch in the waist, shorten the length while opening the gown up to reveal a nice amount of leg, and she changed the lumpy 3-button shoulder closure into a nice, super flat zipper closure that now is practically invisible on my skin. Overall, I believe Dorcas is the best dressmaker, seamstress, and alterations master in all of Tampa. Any work I need done in the future, I will only bring to her :) read more

Update on my review since this time around, I DID get something altered for myself. I had a bridesmaid dress that needed plenty of alterations. It was one size too big and too long. The bride had specific rules that the measurement from hem to floor must be 20 inches. I was measured and the dress was pinned together. She even pinned it at the chest to make sure it wasn't too revealing. A week later, I come back to pick it up. A different girl was there and had a little trouble finding my dress. It doesn't seem like they have a very good organizational system, but nonetheless, she eventually found it. It fit perfectly, and I was very satisfied. Thank you, Dorcas! read more

They promised a quick turnaround and delivered. I never had to get jeans altered so I was a bit skeptical about the process...Dorcas's took the time to explain exactly what they were going to do (to keep the worn look on the cuff). I haven't even gotten my alterations back yet, but I'm giving them 5 stars already. I showed up to the shop this morning, not realizing that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Well, despite being closed, somebody let me in, had me try on all my garments and marked them for alteration, and then sent me on my way with a promise that everything would be ready by Saturday. Fantastic customer service, and if their sewing is half as good, my 5 star rating will stand. UPDATE: I got my clothes back. Everything was ready on time and done as expected. After seeing good reviews went in twice, first time with 2 shorts needing stitching, and 2 dress pants, one requiring stitching and one hemming. Advised the girl in front that the hem length should be the same as the other pair. When got back the shorts were stitched very well and the dress pants stitched, but no work done on hem. Only charged $20 which was still great price for the 3. Went back about a week later with just two dress pants to be hemmed, this time with a needle pulling the hem up to where it should be on one, and again asked for them to hem the other at the same length. Again, the one with the needle was hemmed, the 2nd was not. This time $23. Moral of the story, either have their staff put in marks of where to hem, or be sure to fix the hem length yourself first. While they are open Saturdays, it usually seems quite busy. I dont think the girl out front speaks english very well, but if you make sure they understand what to do it looks like they do a very good job and a good price. read more

I am SO happy with the alterations that Dorca's made to my bridesmaid dress. I accidentally ordered a dress that was 4 sizes too small for me (my own fault), and Dorca's saved it. They had to take out the zipper in the back and put in a corset to make it work better because there just wasn't enough fabric from the hem to let it out more than I needed. They made sure to call and confirm the changes with me before making the alteration, which I really appreciated. They also got it done SUPER fast! I brought the dress in to the shop three weeks before the wedding, and they were able to work with my very tight timeline. We were even able to fit in two fittings throughout those three weeks to make slight adjustments as necessary. I got my wedding dress altered here. It was pricey but Dorca was able to create a sweetheart neckline with no issue, a bustle, and my hemline was perfect. The store where I purchased the dress said a sweetheart neckline could not be done! Make sure to bring your gown in with plenty of time to spare. I've taken numerous items to Dorca's, including my wedding dress. On two separate occasions, I brought a few items here and there before I decided to bring my wedding dress. Overall, I've had the works done: pant legs hemmed and waists taken in, silk skirts taken in and hemmed, blouse and dress straps shortened and then, a formal wedding gown taken in. All of them were well done and did not require a second go around. At some alterations shops, you are charged after you receive the altered item. At Dorca's, you are asked to pay upfront when you drop your item off. This may be strange for some but I understand why they do this. They don't want to get scammed by people who like to run off with free services. At first, I was hesitant about paying upfront but the fact is that Dorca's has consistently produced quality work for me so I'm fine with it. They are good about noticing small stains or imperfections on the items you bring to them. Perhaps due to experience in the alterations business, they make a point to do this to cover their bases. This is particularly smart though because I didn't notice that I brought in a skirt with a stain on it. They noticed it before I did and I'm glad they let me know, as they were taking measurements. There is a small language barrier, but not enough to be a problem for me. Also, Dorca's is on the pricier side and they are firm on their prices. I haven't been to other alterations places in Tampa, mainly because I haven't found another place with better reviews. So I will continue to go to Dorca's for my alteration needs, unless I find a suitable place that is closer to home. read more

I seen "Dorcas" and it seemed to have a high review score. I called them up and then went down to the shop. It was a further drive from me, but I wanted an expert who had great customer service to work on my suit coat. Wow. The customer Service was 5 stars, and her expertise and professionalism was worth every penny.
