Ms. Mary Anthony looks nothing like my tough guy high school english teacher. She didn't start class that way, either. In fact, I have no idea how she started class, because I was 15 minutes late the first time. But as soon as I walked into class and saw that look in her eye, I got a feeling I was back in that high school english class. At 90 years old, her spirit was still just as alive as her will to pass on what she knew. And pass on she did. I get nervous in front of people, I lose that spirit and freedom that I often find alone in my ballet shoes on the rooftop at home. And this lady just wouldn't stop pointing it out. "Natalia, that's wrong" "Natalia, I need you to see what I'm doing, not just look at it" "Natalia, get up and slap your left leg--that way you'll remember to use the right one next time I tell you to" "Natalia, don't think--just FEEEEL" and finally, "Natalia, have you had any dance training before?" *holds breath* "Well, I'm glad you came back to us." And then came the after class speech. She told me she knows that everyone is nervous on their first time, and that she wanted me to know that she barks but never bites, that living out there in the world is tough today, that they teach you in school to suppress the innate creativity of your soul, that she sees the youth today and it scares her, because they are passive and indifferent, but that I have a sparkle in my eye and she knows that I will continue with dance, as that is our one-woman fight against the world. As I left the place, I felt like I was in tough luck with this lady, just as I had been with that lit teacher, who used to toss my papers aside and call them "sub-par" and bring tears to my eyes. And now, writing is my life. Funny as it might sound, my love for writing really began after taking that class. Mary Anthony's class is definitely scary as well--and yet after the first lesson, I felt like I had come across a treasure. There is really something about teacher who know how to do their job. They're tough, they work you hard, and you do hate them at the moment but in the end you have this deep respect for them. Most teachers are nice, they make you feel good, and all you remember at the end is "nice try"--which leaves you wondering whether you really are any better than when you started. But with Mary Anthony, you know you are going to shape up and do it fast because she doesn't let anything go. And you can't get prissy, or angry, or take anything personally, because she doesn't care about the money; she cares about dance--that's pretty obvious. So, in the end, there's really just two questions when considering returning for more classes: Would I like to develop a passion for dance as I have for words? Yes. Am I willing to take the tough road of learning once again? That, I haven't decided yet.

Like the kind you give to your grandmother) So I simply asked in a sweet and respectful tone, "Hi was wondering if your beginners 1 class is appropriate for someone who has never danced before?" -And I heard the most shrewd voice on the other end saying "Listen! Lower your voice, and speak slower!" I am a firm believer of -it's not what you say, (because I would have been glad to adjust my tone), but how you say it. I think the play would have been a riot of laughs had she had a larger role. Writers, director and producers, take another look at your show and add her in much more....she would have added so much dimension to the cage scene. Quite frankly I did not really understand the point of the thieves. She has a madcap quality that is rare without it pandering or being obvious. It is a definite must see for those who want to see a really talented lady up close and personal really get a character she made her own.

Anthony Meindl's Workshop commits fraud to benefit their own employees. I was asked to come speak…read moreand direct a workshop panel as an Industry guest via my intern at the time, who also happened to work as a receptionist at the Anthony Meindl workshop. The honorarium I received for teaching, was instead sent to their own employee, my intern at the time, who pocketed the money. When I informed the school of this, they said "sorry, you should talk to (intern name here) we don't know what agreement you had with him." So I am to believe they think it's perfectly fine, to pay one of their employees (who is an intern) rather than pay the industry guest they invited who taught. But of course the intern who also works at the studio is entitled to the money, and the guest speaker doesn't get paid, and then gets ignored. SHADY. UNPROFESSIONAL and just gross.

At one point, I was talking to someone and some other guy showed up then whisked the person I was talking to away (who never came back to continue the conversation, by the way). I'm pretty sure it wasn't some "you're annoying and obnoxious" thing since I hadn't exchanged many words with him, I looked as cute as I normally do and this other guy wasn't there when this first guy approached me. I'm also conservative moderate to apolitical and it felt like if you didn't play in the leftist sandbox, you'd also not be welcome (more a vibe than a direct experience) but that didn't feel like how you should treat someone you've contacted to see about being on your board or who has the background I have. You never know who's going to show up to things or who knows who. There are plenty of other cultural organizations and venues I've gone to where I was treated far more warmly and where it didn't feel like some exclusive club. The stars are for the venue itself being very nice and the exhibit itself being thought provoking and interesting.

I went to New York Live Arts to see Nai-Ni Chen Dance company. It was their 30th year anniversary…read more I so enjoyed the performance. It was based on a lot of Chinese themes but brought in everyday politics through dance. I didn't really see the political reference but it was beautiful. The dancers are very talented. The choreography is brilliant. The theater itself is small. If you go wear light clothing it was quite warm. You will not want to wear a heavy sweater or hat. Definitely worth seeing. The theater looks like it has some interesting performances.

However, I came across this show on Goldstar and thought it would be an excellent idea. The small theatre located in East Harlem was a wonderful experience. I wasn't sure what to expect due to the size of the venue and when we arrived the ticket line was a bit disorganized, but that was basically the sole negative. As I have never seen the "Wizard of Oz" this was going to be a new experience for myself and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The acting was pretty good and I enjoyed the comedy throughout the show and live band that was on the left side of the stage. My family was pleased and enjoyed the show-- as it's a small intimate venue the cost was extremely low but they still delivered a quality product. The characters also stayed late to take pictures with any and everybody.-- thanks again Scarecrow and Dorothy. I would definitely venture here again, and have interest in watching "A raisin in the sun" here next month, once it starts up again.

I had the pleasure of seeing "A Raisin in the Sun" at this homespun theater, and the acting was…read moresuperb at a bargain price. The production was wonderful. I only wished they had mics, and there was a point when someone was "slapped" on stage, but there was no sound. Also, you can very much hear all of the sounds of traffic and talking from outside the theater, especially if you sit higher up, but this also happens in some really nice theaters in Midtown. Sound issues aside, there aren't any "bad" seats in the house. The energy and love of acting are apparent here. That makes up for some shortcomings: a location inside a nondescript tower, a theater that eschews ornate decorations for practical seating, and a neighborhood that can be a tad "lively." I'll definitely be back and will continue to bring people. Thank you HRT for providing theater at an affordable price to an area that may not normally get the opportunity. Tip: The theater sells a lot of tickets discounted through Goldstar.
