I have been studying at WVS for four years now... the progress I have made as a singer and musician during that time frame is beyond palpable. I always studied music when and where I was able to throughout my time at school (through highschool). However, in college I did not study a musical track and found myself lost after graduation. Patrick and his staff at WVS have helped me improve to a state where I not only feel comfortable singing in front of others, but I have also been able to write and perform my own songs in front of an audience!! Patrick Micheal Wickham is a godsend. With his unique background - Juilliard AND med school! - Patrick knows how the voice works both artistically and scientifically, and he uses that knowledge to pinpoint your weaknesses and show you exactly how to improve. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of all kinds of music. I grew up signing Soul/R&B and Gospel, and Patrick works with me in those genres. But he's also shown me that the way to perform better within them is by going beyond them, by training in Opera! I had developed a lot of bad habits by imitating pop singers, so "legit" training - releasing the tongue, "covering" with a high palette, not cheating with the nose - was exactly what I needed. It's made made my voice fuller, richer, and healthier. I have more endurance and flexibility, more range and resonance, and - here's the best part - what sounds better also feels easier. How it feels is fundamental. Most teachers are fixated on how you sound. Patrick focuses on your instrument - conditioning you to be attuned to how things feel in your body - and the sound follows from that. It's the difference between tweaking the EQ on a cheap stereo and upgrading to a high-end system. Good technique is paradoxical. The diaphragm is a muscle you can't feel or flex, so you have to let it work. You have to be actively passive. Patrick has devised a brilliant way to do that, using visualization. It's hard to explain - you just have to try it. Patrick is also one of the most incredibly talented singers I know. His voice is stunning. I'd almost pay for lessons just to hear his demonstrations. RUN dont walk to Wickham Vocal Studios. I am a person who loves to sing and raising 3 children I never had the opportunity to pursue my love. Now that my children are adults, I decided to take some vocal lessons. I searched and found about 3-4 teachers, I thought I would go to each one and then narrow it down to that 1 special one...well the search is ended....PATRICK WICKHAM is an ANGEL.. First, let me say, this studio is very very knowledgeable and professional but warm and caring. Mr. Wickham absolutely cares about his students. You are not just a number..but a person who he truly invests his time in to achieve whatever it is you may want. I cannot express my happiness with what I received on the 1st visit. I was a bit nervous, however, as soon as I met Patrick that eased..He is absolutely so warm and friendly with a great vibe. He is more than a VOICE COACH...he knows about the physical aspects of the voice which makes for knowledge above and beyond what you will receive with just a voice teacher or singing coach. He felt my throat area to assess the tightness of the muscles around that area. We did some vocal exercises and the entire session was taped which he emailed me along with a LOT of exercises specifically designed to MY ISSUE. So, as you see Patrick does not treat you as a "one size program fits all"...he designs the program around your specific issues. All I can say is Patrick Wickham is beyond kind, personable, knowledgeable about what you need to get where you want to be...and has a BEYOND BELIEVEABLE VOICE!!! After dealing with vocal issues for all of my college years, I sought out a competent voice teacher or else risk never being taken seriously in this industry. What I found in Patrick Wickham was a voice physiologist who showed me how to use my instrument to its fullest potential. Friends and colleagues immediately took notice of my newfound power and dexterity, and in six months, I booked an agent, a national tour, and now I'm currently in the new off-Broadway musical 'bare'. Nothing against their vocal teaching practices, but I wish to express my frustration dealing with the admissions office in regards to being enrolled in WVS. I've had multiple problems with either canceling my contract or rescheduling lessons in the past. My contract was auto-renewed past the "automatic 3 month enrollment period," leaving my credit card account to be charged beyond the point outlined in the contract. Your payments become non-refundable WVS credit - I have moved out of New York and have no way to redeem this credit. Please be aware of the 'fine print' WVS will hold you to before signing the contract. I forewarn you as there may be many complications later down your enrollment. read more

Since the lessons are 1 on 1, the experience is highly personalized and tailored to suit your specific needs as a student. Patrick is the main instructor and does a phenomenal job of explaining concepts and developing them into reality. You will find yourself with a voice you didn't know you had after just a few lessons and practice. Each lesson focuses on vocal exercises and specific songs to work on, but you can work on specific points of difficulties as well, as said before each experience is personalized. Jon Price is another instructor which also does an outstanding job as a teacher and vocalist. Both instructors are extremely helpful. The program is organized, with specific goals and objectives being set so your progress can be kept track of. These are all kept on a USB stick along with any other media materials a student may need such a songs, recordings of each lessons, exercises, and more. They also offer Saturday bootcamps for free, which are group voice lessons that focus on other subjects that can greatly benefit your learning progress. Another amazing part of it is that they offer open mic parties on select Saturdays, where a large group of people come together and listen to each other perform a song that they have put a lot of work into. After going to several myself, it really impresses me and others alike to see people come again and again and be able to really hear the positive progress they have made. And the best feeling is probably when everyone claps for you afterwards, acknowledging not juts your performance but the work you put in to achieve it. Afterwards, it becomes a social event and overall really becomes a night to look forward to and look back upon to remember. In that year, my vocal technique and my understanding of that technique have expanded immensely, Before starting at WVS, I studied classical voice for 9 years. The technique at WVS fits many different genres of performing - I am transitioning into a musical theater career. I am not in the habit of leaving five-star ratings for any company, as I believe they all have sincere need for improvement. WVS is no exception to this, and they are not a perfect company. That being said, the five-star rating I am giving them has to do with the "extra credit" they earn in providing not only services but results unlike any I have experienced. I came here almost a year ago to prepare for a singing role in an upcoming feature film (and I am by no means a singer whatsoever). Mr. Wickham already has an industry reputation for being very thorough and advanced in his vocal techniques because he is one of the few medically trained "doctor-singers" in the profession, but also for giving voices to clients who have been told by other teachers they would never sing. I was not at all happy with the singing programs in acting schools and other teachers in the city, so I wanted to book something pro-level. It was hard to book an appointment, but I believe it was one of the best decisions of my life. For starters, this is a boutique experience. The vocal assessment all students go through is worth far far more than the cost for a 90-minute session and other lessons are fit around your budget. Lessons take place in a beautiful SOHO penthouse with tea, coffee, treats, etc. or in Midtown--Mr. Wickham and group sessions in SOHO, the other 5 teachers are in Midtown. There are free open mics and performance opportunities for students, weekly free group lessons, recitals and I think there is a show or something the best students get to audition for (not me... LOL). All-in-all I would have to say that the staff is pro, the teachers--esp Jon Price and PMW--are compassionate and super knowledgeable. The admin Sam is a sweetie, even though it took her two times to get my name right :-/ Quite simply, the best singing studio in Manhattan by far. P.S. - I've noticed the one bad review on Yelp mentions a lack of intensity and professionalism on the part of Mr. Wickham. As stated, I'm the first to call out a business for anything I feel they could improve. However, I'm highly skeptical of this review as I have experienced nothing but professionalism and, frankly, an abundance of attention from my teacher. Maybe they don't like the intensity of the lessons and are looking for an excuse as to why they didn't continue. I've been to yoga classes that are too intense before and I totally get that. But there is certainly no lack of attention and good god no lack of intense exercising, homework, theory, career coaching and overall thorough butt-kicking. Yeah, I get it, if you walk in to a few lessons and don't really apply yourself to the work you aren't going to get results. And I'm no Pavarotti yet, but damn, I was a NON-SINGER and now I am recording demos in one year's time. read more

I joined this studio close to a year now in order to improve my voice as a singer and performer. I wasn't completely sure what to expect, but I was happily surprised at the experience. Patrick Wickham is not only an excellent singer, but also a great mentor who knows how to help his students. After taking an assessment, he is able to tell what a particular person needs to focus on and works with them in the best way to improve. Not only with the voice, but with career goals as well that involves singing (musical theatre, recording artists, song writing, etc). He utilizes exercises that are meant to loosen/get rid of unnecessary tension, get the most out of your breathing, and articulate specific vowels during a song. He also is sure to include a progress worksheet, in order to keep track of not only the songs you want to sing, but what areas you have to work on and setting up an objective for your career goal. Also, he is sure to record each lesson so you can go back to listen to what you have learned whenever you need to. Patrick isn't the only instructor on hand; there are other wonderful people ready to help anyone trying to improve. Such as Jon Price, who runs the vocal boot camps on Saturday's. The only negative thing I can really say about this studio is that lessons typically tend to run over the time frame and some lessons you have to book in advance due to the high student load. I have seen tremendous growth in myself, and others who know me have seen it as well. I've grown more confident as a performer, and I owe a large part of that to this studio. I was a student there and had many problems. My teacher had a hard time getting paid. I had a few lessons with Wickham--and thought his technique was too aggressive and pushed. Patrick is an unbelievable voice instructor. He studied medicine prior to becoming a performer. So he not only knows what needs to be done, but why and how it should be done. After a very short period of time, he produces results that are simply unbelievable. I signed up for lessons to improve how I sing. He has completely transformed my voice - more power, more range, and much less strain. Beyond his technical skill, he is a delightful and entertaining person, which makes lessons fun. And he is terrific at building up his student's confidence. I am a choral singer who wanted to sing a solo someday.
