There's not that much parking in the lot, but we were able to find a spot because we came on a weekday. I knew double bluff has an off leash section, but the multiple signs were confusing, especially the ones that say only humans can enter through a certain point. It was nice to see showers and dog washing stations, but the lower ones weren't working, and the main showers only work if you keep pressing. The only bathrooms were portables. It's a long walk to the off leash section, so if you want more room to yourself, you have to go farther. The beach was shallow enough for a long ways. The seaweed closer to the parking lot side of the beach seems to be wasting much of the shoreline, unless it's always like that. There were multiple dry sheets of seaweed throughout the sandy parts, but they can be avoided since the beach front is so vast. read more

Best beach I've been to on Whidbey Island and it's always my go-to. Clean and so much sand for everyone to spread out. Great for kids - lots of wood forts and a sand dollar haven when the tide goes out. We've also clammed here and had success. Highly recommended! read more

Suuuuch a hidden gem for doggy bliss!! Absolutely had a blast here and the dogs were having the time of their life. It's a beautiful sandy beach with huge bluffs and views of snow-topped mountains everywhere you look. It's a quick 15 minute drive from the Clinton ferry! There's some picnic tables. No real restrooms, only honeybucket's. There's a water fountain and rinse off area, but it looks like it was still turned off for the season (I could be wrong about this, I didn't try myself). 10/10 recommend bringing your dogs here! read more

Oh so fun!! Beaches are fun in general. But dog friendly off leash beach?!!! The best!!! Absolute best!! We've discovered this place over a year ago with my little dood, Baci who is a huge swimmer goldendoodle. But we came in a cold winter time and he didn't do too much swimming but rather just ran for the hills! For the beach! The mountain' ran to all the other off leash dogs! He run with So much joy here!! Didn't even look back that little dood! It was heart attacking inducing but I survived! He definitely survived :) Naturally, we came back!! The parking: they have a tiny lot but it is always full!! You can tons of cars parked on the side of a narrow road leading to the beach / parking lot before you see the beach! You do get lucky though. I always find a spot in the lot! Just a few minutes wait. They have a separate entrance for off leash dog beach! Which is better sometimes so you're walking through all the logs/ seaweeds/ debris on the beach. Not so good when you're leaving. And when tides are ( last week) it's even more fun! So fun to run, swim and chase waves for my puppy. He loves it! Gets so dirty! But loves it. The reason I didn't give this a 5 stars is the cleaning stations. They did have one for dogs with water bowls but it's not working. And they have one not so great area to wash your feet but doesn't work too well. A lot of tourists do come here so not everyone's a local. Bathrooms don't work but they have those honey buckets! Who uses them anyway?? No one! I wish I can somehow rinse my pup off before carrying 20 lbs of sand back home in the car in his hair. Also, the seaweeds/ algae's aren't the best. My pup got paws infection after our last visit even though we had a long shower after! So beware! But if my dog could talk, I'm sure he'd say he Love this place!!! Ruff ruff!! Such a happy free beach for my Baci and all the other pups. Just need to be a little cleaner!! read more

What a fun, spacious beach on Whidbey Island! We came here with our dog, as Double Bluff Beach has an off-leash dog area. In fact, the off-leash dog area is massive! It's an awesome beach for dogs...and humans, too! It was so spacious that on a sunny Saturday it never felt crowded during our visit, though the small parking lot would tell otherwise. There was room for parties to have a private area to lay out and have a picnic while others walked along the beach. There are restrooms, outdoor showers and water fountains as you enter the main entrance of the beach. For where the off-leash dog area is, there is a separate entrance where the dogs can sniff around the park benches that are plotted there, and is gated off, so your dog can't escape and wander to the other entrance. It's a well-planned area. Some were swimming, paddle boarding, building sand castles and making forts with all the wood placed on the beach. We visited during low tide, which was especially nice since we got to walk along more so in the water without getting too deep in and/or wet. If in the area on a sunny day, I would make your way to Double Bluff Beach to spend a few hours with your furry baby, as there is a lot of space to roam. read more

DEDUCTING 1 STAR FOR QUICKSAND!!! Seriously! Beautiful place, had a lovely time there with my borrowed dog (for the first half hour), but despite my usual round of pre-first time visit research, had ZERO idea I'd be finally experiencing what my generation (Gen X) had been led to believe by numerous 70's and 80's TV shows was one of the top five dangers in American life: QUICKSAND! The other four being, of course, cursed Tiki idols, tarantulas, killer bees, and cars exploding with little cause or provocation. So, what follows is a cautionary tale I never thought I'd be telling, but first...my advice to you...BEWARE LOW TIDE (also, try not to be fat...I don't think that helped). We were having fun walking out over the tidal flats, ankle-deep in the cold water, examining all the sand dollars, tiny crabs, and orange things that looked like thicker, more fabulous centipedes, and I was occasionally sinking an inch or two into the sand, but it was when we decided to head back to shore that my awesome day came grinding to a halt. Suddenly, every step had me sinking up to my ankles, then to mid-calf, then up to my knees as I struggled to free myself. I don't mind telling you, I was starting to feel a low hum of anxiety! Every quicksand TV episode and movie scene I'd ever watched as a kid was flashing through my panicked brain, followed by National Geographic clips of various animals getting stuck in sucking mud pits (and occasionally dying, but sometimes being rescued by the concerted efforts of caring humans, banding together). The mosquito encased in amber from Jurassic Park even made an appearance. I know, I know...a tad dramatic, but dude! IT WAS QUICKSAND!!! The modern human brain is just NOT prepared for this! My lizard brain, on the other hand, was being SUPER helpful with screams of "GAHHHHHHHHHHH!!! OH GOD, AHHHHHHH!!! WE'RE GONNA DIE HERE, GAHHHHHH!!!!!! STOP, DROP, AND ROLL, YOU NINNY!!!" My lizard brain sometimes gets its emergency training confused, you understand. However, as I spent the next 30 minutes slogging through maybe 30 yards of heavy, sucking sand, trying to reach dry land before the tide rolled in (or before my still-recovering-from-an-accident knee and ankle gave out, or my heart and lungs exploded from the unexpected cardio), I did actually consider doing the rolling part. But, there were too many witnesses, and lying flat and barrel rolling to safety just seemed to lack the class and decorum of huffing and puffing, arms windmilling as I lost my balance in mud up to my knees, and muttering a few choice obscenities. One of the nice thin people walking by, not too far away in the non-quicksand part, mentioned that it was "unusual for the quicksand to be so bad this early in the season". Another, several minutes later, offered that "it would be a good idea to bring a walking stick, next time". Clearly, in case you were wondering, none of them were with National Geographic. At no time did anyone offer assistance, or even ask if I might need help, to which I must say, thank you! You could've given help, but you gave so much more. In the end, I did manage to make it out, alive, and leave this much needed warning for my fellow Yelpers. So, remember...in case of quicksand: Don't panic. Try not to be fat. Stop, drop, and roll. What a beautiful, clear beach. Many of the locals have suggested this place and I'm glad we decided to visit. The water was cold and the tide was very low. Many of the locals visit here to do some clamming but we just decided to just take a little swim and enjoy the beach. Many dog owners bring their fur babies here to have a swim and that could be a problem if owners do not clean up after dogs. I think this will be a good beach for the family to visit. The tide doesn't come up too fast and there's plenty of sand for castle building. Just another FYI there's plenty of kelp/sea weed on this beach as well, some wash up on the shore and it doesn't smell too good, otherwise it's a great spot to visit. Another tip, come early! The parking can be tricky. I hope we will be able to come back here sooner than later. read more

This beach is mainly popular for dog owners who want a large, open space for their dogs to run around without leashes but for HEAVENS SAKES pick up your dog's crap! Sheezus!! I didn't have the heart (or stomach) to photograph the multiple piles of dog crap all over the beach and it was simply just GROSS. I kept tip toeing around on the sandy parts trying to make sure I didn't step in a pile of recycled Alpo. Aside from that obvious piece of grossness, the parking is very limited in the tiny parking lot. This beach is located in a residential area in Freeland so I am sure the locals there get fed up with weekend/summer traffic and tourists littering and letting their dogs poo on the beach without picking them up. You can park on the street but should get there early as the longer you wait, the farther you will have to walk. Once on the beach, it is peaceful. When low tide hits it is miles of walking on smooth, dark grey sand and there are tons of driftwood for you to make your own lean-to canopy of epic hippie proportions. There is no shade on the beach unless you make your own love shack. Shells litter the beach all over the place and it appears the only people who pick them up are tourists. If you are lucky, clams will show their pretty little feet and you can scoop them up and cook up some clam chowder for a nice evening meal with a loaf of crusty French Bread and a glass of Chardonnay. read more

I would give this place five stars because of the natural beauty, but the toilets are really unfortunate. They have tried to update the facilities, but the bathroom facilities can be very stinky. The plus side is that there are bathrooms. My dogs do not enjoy the beach or water, but I enjoy having other people's cute dogs running around me off leash at this picturesque park. The trash can is often overflowing with trash and dog poop making it hard for people to pick up and dispose of their dog's poop. I haven't seen much stray poop on the beach. There is very little parking in the lot, but there is street parking for quite a bit down the road. Overall a great place whether it's freezing out or incredibly sunny!! We often visit as it's close to Seattle, but it feels a world away. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place I would recommend this over any other off leash "beach" dog park in the Puget Sound. I've been to the one in Edmonds (Edmonds Marina) and the one in Seattle (Magnuson) and neither even comes close to comparing to this place... It's a great place with tons of space for the dogs to run, practice their swimming while retrieving a ball in the water and to chase birds (seagulls, Blue Herons and even though eagles are too smart to be chased by a dog, there are some). It also provides a peaceful walk or run for the parents, once you get past the initial 200 or so feet of the beach... This is usually an every other weekend adventure for my dog and I. My dog ALWAYS comes home tired and normally the other dogs we bring with do also. This place has quite a long stretch of beach (can be deceiving since there are a couple bluffs to walk around) and is plenty large enough from cliff to water to avoid others if need be. Even when the tide is in (well most of the time, only once seen the tide come in so far that we were afraid that we would have to swim back to the car...) Sure it's a drive to the Mukilteo ferry, but a short ferry ride (20 minutes) to Clinton (Whidbey Island) and about another 10 to 15 minute drive after you get off the ferry on the other side. ALL IN ALL IT'S COMPLETELY WORTH IT!!! Word of caution... The initial one hundred feet or so, your dogs have to be on leash... Designation of where your dogs can be off leash is marked by a long pole that usually has some kind of flag flying from it (it's closer to the cliff side of things on the right when walking out). There is also an explanation of this when you first walk in by the free doggy bags AND PLEASE PEOPLE DO PICK UP AFTER YOUR PET AND SELF.. NOTHING BLEEPS MORE THAN WALKING BAREFOOT ON THE BEACH AND STEPPING IN A PILE.. OR WATCHING A BIRD EAT AND DIE FROM A PIECE OF PLASTIC OR WHATEVER THAT SOMEONE HAS LEFT BEHIND... Besides.. people WILL give you looks if you don't pick up after yourself and pooch!!! Ferry: Usually leaves about every 20 minutes to 1/2 hour. Yes, sometimes there can be a wait, but it COMPLETELY depends on the weather and when you arrive. Cost for the ferry is $8.60 for Vehicle and Driver and an additional $3.95 for additional adult passengers. Dogs are no charge. On the way back, you only pay for the Vehicle and driver. OR You can make a full day of it and drive more north up to Deception Pass, take Hwy 20 across to I-5 and then come back down... I love this beach when it's beautiful out. This beach has one of the best off leash dog parks around, in fact I don't believe one even exists in Seattle. Sure there is an off leash section at Golden Gardens but it's not even on the beach. The off leash area is actually on the beach here! There is also a very clean bathroom and overhead shower area to rinse off after you've been in the salt water. This beach is not labeled on Highway 525 so you can easily pass by it without even noticing but the secret to getting here is once your ferry docks at Clinton, drive for 8.3 miles to Double Bluff Road, then take a left and go to the end of the road. There is a small parking lot for maybe 15 cars but it's always packed so you might have to end up parking along side of the road. As a hidden goodie, this beach also has a fairly decent clam population if you want to bring a shovel and bucket with you. However you have to walk around the bend and it's about a .5 mile walk on the beach to the clam grounds. read more

We take our pups here almost daily. High tide or low tide this is a great walk! In the summer you can spend hours watching the stars and play in the phosphorescent tide. By day walk a mile out to the waters edge and feel like you're in a different world. It's also a great vista to watch the 4th of July fireworks! read more

We met 2 of our friends there that has a brother of our puppy. The pups thoroughly enjoyed the beach. We weren't sure if our boy Moose would enjoy the water......we couldn't keep either pup out of the water, it was great. Very clean. Everyone was nice except for a woman and a few of her friends. She was constantly scorning people and their dogs. Here friend had a little dog that she had wrapped up in her jacket. She kept turning away anytime a pup went up to her. They just wanted to say hi. Not sure why these people were there if they don't like dogs. SMH. Aside from the beach Nazi, we really enjoyed it. read more

I LOVE this beach! I think it's mostly for dog owners / lovers because it is an off leash beach so be prepared for dogs to randomly come up to you and say hello. They may get you wet and gross but you cannot get mad! Afterall, it's their beach =P I've been here twice and I'll definitely be back many more times. The ferry ride felt like it was only 10 minutes. It was a very short ride. Sometimes, there's a wait for the ferry, sometimes there isn't so make sure you plan enough time for the wait also. I like to come here if I have an entire free day because I don't want to worry about time when I'm here. I walked for an hour and I was still not at the end of the beach. It just seems to keep going and going. I did go farther the 2nd time than I did the first time because of the tide. Hopefully I can go even farther next time. My parents live up the beach about 3 miles but their beach is really rocky. When it's not too crowded we like to take the newfs down to double bluff because we can walk out 100 yards and the dogs can swim next to us. I thought all the 5 star reviews would mean it really would be worth the drive. Well it's not. The beach doesn't have waves. It's more like a lake shore filled with river rocks. If you come be sure to bring water shoes for yourself and clothes you can get wet in. The water is fine. Parking is free but difficult and crowded. There were about 50 dogs on the entire stretch Sunny Saturday so if you walk end to end you are only with clusters of 3 dogs at a time. The downfall is the type of dogs and people that were there on our Visit. out of the 50 dogs that were there only 4-6 were purebred the rest were rescue dogs. Rescue is great but there were a few that are extremely dog aggressive. Dog fights. So it's the owners associated with the rescue dog that are the problem. If your dog is mean don't bring him to a public off leash dog park. The culture of guests on the beach were standoffish, offended if your dog touched their dogs toy, or a hangout for kids getting high in cluster groups. We walked the whole stretch and saw differ groups of late teens early 20's getting high. We will not be back. It is not worth the wait for a ferry, the ferry charges, nor the length of time to get there. I will go to the medina, redmond, or mercer island parks where at least maybe the high number of pure bred dogs and affluent community might intimidate stupid owners of aggressive dogs not to attend out of fear of being sued by people with the resources to do so. read more

1) Do you hate the hoards that go to the dog park for Seattle's few sunny weekend days? 2) Does your dog love the water? 3) Do you own a car? [4) Looking for a day/date trip for that special someone with a dog ;) ?] If you answer "yes" to all the questions above (especially #1) you will love this dog park. Most Seattle dog owners know Magnuson/Marymoor are both packed on sunny days. There are just too many people and dogs, it gets claustrophobic even if you aren't boxed in. When I sense a day such as this one, I plan on going to Double Bluff Beach! I think the walk to the end is about a 30 minute walk (don't take my word though it was filled with stops). Whats nice though, is that after you walk 7 minutes out, you'll see a group of people only 1 / 5 minutes or less frequent (on a "crowded" day). The scenery is pretty! You'll see snow covered mountains in the background, Mt Rainier, the tips of sky scrapers in downtown Seattle, and eagles/hawks. Of course, if your dog loves to chase, there are quite a few crows and ducks to keep them per-occupied and tired. Tips: 1) BRING LOTS OF WATER AND A BOWL. Your dog may drink the ocean water and the fresh water at the park is shut off most of the year 9+ / 12 months. There is also no sink in the bathroom. Every once in a while you'll probably want to stop and let your dog drink some water. 2) Plan on making it a picnic. It seems like you always spend more time on the island than you think it will be so pack a lunch/snack. There isn't any food at the beach. At the end of the beach there are some trees you can sit beneath and have a nice lunch without being bothered too much by others' dogs. I know bringing food to a dog park is never a great idea, but you almost don't see anyone so I figure its okay. 3) No trash cans after you leave the bathroom area. So bring a couple ziploc bags to save yourself from poop smell... Assuming you're going to pick up your dog's poop. read more

We took the ferry on a day trip on a recommendation from a fellow dog lover. The ferry costs about $15 each way so be warned. The line to get to the island took us about 1hr 15mins but on the way back we just hopped right on. Once you get on the island its about a 15-20 min nice semi-scenic drive. This was the most fun I have had with my dog in a long time. The views are amazing. When you get there, It is a big public beach where after a certain point it is off leash. The dogs can swim and play and get all muddy in the nice sandy beach. My pooch loved it. He is still passed out and its been a few hours after we got home. I will definitely be back to this place. This is an incredibly odd beach in my eyes. I get it - you can take your dog off the leash and let it run around and sniff or fight with other dogs. You can even let your kids run wild, but if you are looking to go sunbathing, this is not your place. There is a large bluff (hence the name) and definitely nice water views, but there is really just tons of semi-wet sand with puddles mixed in and boats that are sitting on the sand scattered. I assume when tide is high these boats are in water, but the water recedes quite a bit. Lots of driftwood and shells. Be careful if you are barefoot. When I was there, I had the opportunity to see skimboarding, which I had never seen, nor heard of previously. Wikipedia describes it on bodies of water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skimboarding), but here, the performance was on large "puddles" in the middle of the sand. Basically, a combo of surfing and skateboarding. There was a competition for different age levels. It actually was pretty cool to watch. There were judges, music, large crowds and lots of picture-taking. If you are into clamming, this is also a great place. Lots of folks with their shovels and used compound buckets collecting clams. As mentioned elsewhere, this place can get a little crowded, although I still am not sure why. Prepare to drive along the road and walk 10 mins to the beachfront. Go for a look, but don't expect to lay out your towel and leave with a tan. If you have a dog, this beach is more worth your time. read more

A pretty beach, not crowded, fun location, and lots of driftwood houses for kids to explore. All the dogs seemed ecstatic to be able to roam and swim freely. For our lab, this beach was a little piece of Heaven. It's a pretty good beach for kids because it is such a flat, shallow, and spacious beach. However, someone needs to say something about the murky water and dog poops floating in it. As much as my son loved playing in the water here, I'm not sure I would bring him back to swim at this beach because the water is, frankly, kinda gross. The other thing about this beach is that it's pretty rocky in most places, which is important to kids who prefer soft sand to play barefoot in. We WILL return to this beach, but on a too-cold-for-swimming sort of day. I imagine it would be really nice on a sunny spring day. read more

Great dog friendly beach that is well worth the trip! I highly recommend checking the tides before going. At high tide there isn't a ton of beach, but closer to low tide the beach is endless and very sandy! Pack lots of fresh water for the dog(s) and everything else you could possibly need is there. There is a bathroom, sticks, and an amazing view for the humans to enjoy while the dogs are playing. The ferry ride is well worth it, and while on Whidbey Island I suggest visiting Marguerite Brons Dog Park too. They have your typical off-leash fenced in area, but they also have acres of fenced in forest and trails where the dogs can explore the woods with their humans. We made a day of it, and plan on doing it again. read more

Absolutely the best dog park. Limited parking in the lot but ample parking around the road. Only one trash can, water fountain and bathroom at the parking lot. The off leash part is a bit farther than that. We've stuck around the quiet bay area, walked the length of the beach or brought a towel and camped at a spot. Either way we enjoy something different each time and our dog gets exhausted! Beautiful mountain views, Seattle skyline and lots of wildlife. We always bring a camera and binoculars. read more

Totally amazing. Took my 6 and 4 year old and had an impromptu oceanography class. We watched live barnacles moving inside their shells. The beach has lots of driftwood and is really cool for small kids (at least during the day). Parking is inadequate. Expect a small hike to your car. read more

Dirty, sandy, beachy...that's how my girl likes it and she LOVED Double Bluff Beach dog park. Hands down the best dog park I've been to because it's all sand and water, my dog's own version of heaven. And it was a great place for us to walk along the beach, gaze out at the Olympics and enjoy a sunny November day in the Puget Sound. I love that there is a place where your dog can legally hang out on the beach (Note as another reviewer commented...your dog must remain on leash until you hit the wind sock and then they can romp to their heart's content). This place is super easy to get to. If you take the ferry just head straight off the ferry until you come upon Double Bluff Road and take a left and drive down towards the park and the water. The parking lot is very small, but there is some parking along the shoulder north of the lot. Bring plenty of towels if your dog likes to swim as much as ours does. Add this to your list of day trips for you and your beach loving furry friend....you'll both go home happy. read more
