I pulled over to take impromptu portraits during the fall because the backdrop of the tall, lush trees were beautiful. There is a playground here but what drew my attention was the forest area on the far right side. I don't even think it was an area we were supposed to be in but it seemed like a nice untouched area full of greenery. Again, perfect for taking photos. Actually, most parts of Washington is naturally gorgeous - wish we had more options like that here in SoCal.

The two areas closest to the entrance are open to everyone and the area closest to the playground and baseball field is handicap parking only. A landscaper was mowing a large grassy field across from the parking areas, later in my visit police officers came just checking in. I arrived around 8:56 a.m. to a few cars in the parking lot and when I left about 22 minutes later the number of cars had approximately doubled. In addition to the large grassy field across from the parking area, the park has a large playground that includes swings, a small basketball court, a baseball field, and a covered picnic area furnished with some picnic tables. A trail system through the trees is speckled with disc golf "holes" as part of a disc golf course. One of the other people using the park had a frisbee and was using the course, it was the first time I had seen disc golf in action. Small flowers were blooming along the trails and I saw a variety of birds including red robins out foraging together and a colorful bird I had not seen before. Fun place to come and take a walk in nature and go for a swing on the swing set.

City workers were in their office (at work on the road) and the road was closed past the park. Driving all the way up to the road closed sign, I saw the turn-in for the parking lot and was relieved the entrance was not in the section of the road that was closed. The park has a variety of offerings including numerous soccer fields, two large baseball fields, pickleball courts abutting a fenced-in grassy sitting area equipped with benches, a skate park, a playground, a restroom building by a flagpole, porta-pottis scattered throughout the park, and two horseshoe pits. I had not thrown a horseshoe in 15 to 20 years (I am approximately 30 years old as of writing this on 24 May 2023). So, knowing I was bigger and stronger than the last time I threw one, I picked up a horseshoe and threw it better than I ever did when I was growing up. Fun to see the decade-plus rest served my horseshoe-throwing skills well. A swallow soared past me and Lepton in the parking lot and European starlings were hard at work foraging in the grass of one of the baseball fields. A worker was mowing the grass past one of the baseball fields. It was an overall serene exploring experience.

The area is run/managed by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and there are a number of different units to explore. We took a right at the fork in the road past the main entrance and parked in the parking lot by the restrooms, information boards, covered area, and office. Venturing off on foot after parking the car, we took the trail in the no hunting zone. A short ways past the trailhead the trail forks into two trails, both trails are out-and-back trails. Today we decided to walk both trails. We were fortunate to have overcast weather that partially guarded us from the sun's rays. On a sunny summer day I could see roasting while walking on this pathway. So make sure to cover up, what we did, and/or wear sunscreen. The bullfrogs were croaking, birds chirping and singing, and woodpeckers pecking all throughout the few hours we spent here. The trails we walked took us past streams, mudflats, estuaries, bird nests, and Olympic Mountain view points. The herons and eagles enjoyed soaring overhead and when we passed an eagle's nest the young ones were just coming out and looking around. A place to take one's time and move a little slow or walk and stop frequently just to see what wildlife crosses one's path. We encountered a couple of covered shelters with seating for those who want to sit and observe the surroundings. Wild flowers also abound in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Berries drew the appetite of birds and were eagerly consumed. No negatives about the Skagit Wildlife Area for me. A great place to come if you are craving nature and especially an abundance of wildlife and/or wild flowers to walk amongst or observe. Not very busy during our time here, we arrived and departed before noon. Also great morning light for taking photos.
