Set on an old military…read morefort, it features historic buildings, batteries, beaches, outdoor spaces, trails, and campgrounds for visitors of all ages. I hadn't been here in decades, but recently visited for a few fun days of glamping in the ol' RV. Sadly, despite securing a coveted campsite reservation 9 months ahead, we weren't able to book at the uber-appealing beachside campground; but we found the upper forest campground area just fine. The park itself is vast, clean, and well-staffed. It would be great for a day visit of exploring the beaches; but was also fun for a multi-day visit where we were able to ride our bikes around the park (and also, once, all the way to town!). We also enjoyed beers a couple of times at their on-site restaurant, Taps at the Guardhouse. And ate lunch along the water another day at their casual burger joint. If you're camping, they only take reservations (no walk-ins), and as long as you keep your camping receipt visible in your car, you don't need a Discover Pass during your visit. If visiting for the day, however, a Discover Pass is required. There's plenty of parking, and lots to do (including visiting a beautiful lighthouse). For less crowded beaches, their north beach area was a fun treat. We'll definitely be looking to book campsites at Fort Worden again!

We came here with a relative who recently moved here and it was wonderful to walk around and talk along the beach... visit and catch up as we strolled up towards the lighthouse. It is spring so it was windy and a bit cold but with enough layers we were pretty comfortable on our short walk. Such a beautiful state park and definitely a "must" to visit while in Port Townsend!

There's not that much parking in the lot, but we were able to find a spot because we came on a…read moreweekday. I knew double bluff has an off leash section, but the multiple signs were confusing, especially the ones that say only humans can enter through a certain point. It was nice to see showers and dog washing stations, but the lower ones weren't working, and the main showers only work if you keep pressing. The only bathrooms were portables. It's a long walk to the off leash section, so if you want more room to yourself, you have to go farther. The beach was shallow enough for a long ways. The seaweed closer to the parking lot side of the beach seems to be wasting much of the shoreline, unless it's always like that. There were multiple dry sheets of seaweed throughout the sandy parts, but they can be avoided since the beach front is so vast.

I think I was a small child the last time I visited Fort Flagler, so I don't remember much. It was…read moregreat to come back and experience again as an adult. Campsites go quickly at this place, especially in the coveted Lower Campground, which is so close to the beach there are tsunami warning signs throughout. The sites are large here, and although tents are allowed, they are most coveted by the RV crowd as all sites have power, water, and sewer hookups. (We also drove through the more rustic Upper Campground, which sits high on the bluff and is more sheltered. There were plenty of tents here, but weren't RV friendly except for the smallest units.) We spent three nights total, spending most of our time at the park enjoying the beach, bike trails, and (of course) the many historic gun batteries that protected the Strait during WWI and WWII. It's also about a 35 minute drive from Port Townsend, home to cute shops and restaurants. Reservations are a must if you want to camp at Fort Flagler. You can make them exactly 9 months ahead and they do fill up quickly.

I haven't ever been to Marrowstone Island before until quite recently and it was a great trip! The…read moremain purpose was to go to Fort Flagler and look at the fort remains and take in the scenic views which there was plenty of! The state park is also a retreat and there is quite a set up for anyone signing up for that and I can see why as the whole area is so peaceful and tranquil. The fort itself is quite a bit smaller as far as seeing structures go compared to Fort Casey on Whidby Island but this state park and it's history has it's own personality and charm. In some ways I like Fort Flagler better as far as peace and quiet goes as Fort Casey can get very crazy with visitors. The walking paths are quite manageable to take in the different batteries or what makes up Battery Row but they are dirt paths so if you go in the winter or spring be prepared for mud. Our Discovery State Park Pass came in handy for this stop and felt like it was put to good use for visiting this particular state park!

There's the beach entry and then the wood trail from the south. Both are easily accessible but the beach has more parking. I'm still awaiting the day we walk and there's orcas swimming by with some humpbacks.

The view is amazing of the mountains and of Puget Sound and if you…read moreare here at the right time you can see the big cargo ships making slow, gradual turns further into Puget Sound as they are heading to the ports of the larger cities off from the Sound like Seattle or Tacoma. It's also quite peaceful and just a great place to chill out. The beach is pebbly but it's still beautiful. In fact it may be even more beautiful because it is pebbly. I don't know if it's still there but there was a structure made out of wood probably a few beach combers made and it was cool to take a peek inside there too. Anyway I love Puget Sound and have seen it from all kinds of different angles but I think this spot is one of my favorites if not my favorite at the top of the list. The lighthouse is cute, a nice white painted building with red roof. Not terribly tall or towery like some lighthouses but beautifully maintained regardless. Definitely a stop to make if you enjoy lighthouses and absorbing the water and nature of Puget Sound.

We came across the Evergreen Arboretum today, and it was such a little gem. I really appreciate how intentional this arboretum felt, it's easy to tell how the community and volunteers are intentional about its upkeep and serenity. If you're in the area and looking for nice walk, or a quiet place to sit The Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens is the place; I highly recommend.
