I would never describe a haircut as 'bad', but somehow this is the only way I can describe my experience at the Douglas J salon. I had previously been to the Aveda institute in East Lansing, where you have new to cosmetology students doing your hair, and somehow got a better haircut there. The first part of my appointment was a dye job. I had bits of my hair that had already been bleached, but had since grown out, and I had assumed that the "Level 3 Color Master" would be able to match my newly bleached hair with the already bleached hair. She could not accomplish this. I had also asked for a 'ashy blonde' color, but was given a yellow blonde color instead. The next was the cut, which was somehow worse than the coloring session. After asking me what I wanted only once, he went on with cutting my hair. Instead of cutting a little bit off and checking the length with the client, he cut off more than wanted and didn't check with me at all if that was what I wanted do be done to my hair. Instead of a chin length cut with light layers, I got a uneven cut that barely reaches the bottom of my ears. I was also left with wet hair as I went off to pay, instead of dry hair as you usually are. One thing than didn't make sense though out my whole experience was the lack of communication. It may have been because I and young than most of their clients, but neither of my stylists even attempted to converse with me. No 'how has your day been?' Or 'what are you majoring in?' They didn't try to make me feel comfortable at all during my whole trip, and made me feel like I was only there for business. When going to a salon, in my opinion, they should make you feel comfortable and welcomed. I can assure you that I did not feel either of those things during my visit. I may not be the most talkative person, but if you attempt to make conversation I will usually respond. Over all, my experience was almost as bad as a great clips. At least a great clips can follow simple instructions. Please rethink your choice when thinking of going to this salon. read more

This place used to be the creme of the creme for hair and spa services. But it has really gone down hill in the last 5-8 years. Many of the stylists that I loved have left and others have been promoted very rapidly. In addition, the salon itself is very run-down compared to what it has typically been over the last 20 years. The new management (not Doug) doesn't seem to care about the facilities as much. I was there today and not only was the place run-down, but it was dirty...hair on the mirrors, dust on the work stations, and grime on the walls. What has happened? All I know if that there are enough DJ alums that you can find a good haircut or mani/pedi elsewhere. No longer need to go here. I'm sorry to say, but they have run this place into the ground. Just started coming this year when moving into the area. First time cut and color cost $85 said tip was included. Next time $85 said tip not included. Next time new color person, price jump to over $100 plus tip. Next time stylist goes to another level, now at $115 plus tip for male short hair.(used to pay $60) Color person did not come to check color,had someone else wash hair. Color left in 15 minutes instead of normal 30, not good result. Stylist great. Will be looking! read more

I have been going to this salon for 10-11 yrs and I can tell you the service, products and attentive staff is consistently excellent. If you are getting a color and a cut you will have 2 people who help you (a colorist, a stylist). Everyone makes sure to ask what your goals are with your hair and will offer professional feedback and suggestions for your hair. Before your colorist begins any work she will have your stylist pop over to see your hair (dry before any color put on so) when you see your stylist later (after your shampoo/conditioner is done) they will have had a chance prior to see your hair dry and learn the type and texture before cutting/styling. When you call to book your appt they will explain the different skill levels and pricing. I can tell you over the years I have had experience with every skill level of colorist and stylist and they are all very good, so if you are coming in for the first time and don't have complex issues or are not in need of a corrective color, you could really go with anyone and you will likely be very happy. Each visit your color formula is saved in computer so you can see anyone after that and they are not 'starting over' to pick the best color solution for you. The reservationists are helpful in determining what will work in your budget regarding skill level pricing. They have a private area for massages which I have not used but it always busy with people coming and going. They have a mens area (sorry, I know nothing about this area) and there is also an area for manicures/pedicures. I have had several manicures here and they are excellent. There is no tipping allowed, so you will not have to factor that in to your bill. I pay about the same now as I did for an inferior salon in the past that I also had to tip anywhere from $7-$20 dollars depending on service. Tip - gift cards to Douglas J are a great idea - something for everyone! read more

I came here for a massage because I had gotten a gift certificate at Christmas. I have had many massages over the years at various different locations. I was scheduled with Jennifer and while she was very nice and professional, I was a little disappointed. She asked if I had trouble areas, which I do, and quickly wrote them down. What I didn't understand is then why she waited til the last few minutes to work on that area and not spend additional time there. The massage room was very cozy, warm and smelled nice. If I return, I will ask her to skip the scalp and face massage. I did not know she was going to run oil throughout my hair and face. Good thing I was just going home afterwards!! I looked greasy!! I asked what the normal price to see her was, which is $84. While I did leave relaxed I don't think I'd pay that price to see her again. read more

I've had 4 haircuts so far by Lindsay (level 3 of 5). My hair is fine and curly, so it can be a challenge to cut well. She has always made it look great! We made some tweaks after the first cut, and she remembers my preferences every time. This weekend, I'm going in so she can work on my wedding updo! I couldn't be more pleased. All the professionals are better at what they do than the students are, of course, so you will pay a higher price. However, they are very competitive for Downtown Ann Arbor, and they still do not allow tipping, just like the Institute. read more

Many of them have been there for years so you don't get a feeling of transience. There is no waiting. Your stylist or colorist always takes the time to discuss your hair concerns before they begin their services. Everyone is pleasant & happy to accommodate you. Of course the best thing is their skill. They are constantly updating their training. It is a thrill to watch my stylist Robin cut my long hair & to layer the top. I went in for a hair cut to go from long straight hair to shoulder length - something kind of sassy. I had been really down and feeling bad about myself for quite a while. I searched the internet for a cut I liked. It wasn't too much of a change, it was pretty much my existing style but just at shoulder length. I took a picture with me and went with a mid-level gal. WORST HAIR CUT EVER!!!! We agreed to go with shoulder length, the word "collar bone" was used. The gal started by saying tip your head forward and started cutting. The very first cut was way above my shoulders and there was no recovering from that. My hair ended up 2 inches shorter than what I had asked for and looks nothing like the picture I took in. From my ears forward I have long sections of hair that have just the slightest layering at the bottom. From my ears back I have all short layers. What am I supposed to do with this? Also the layers in the back were messed up as the top layer was longer than those underneath so it looked like I had big chunks of hair missing. And, when my hair was styled, it was flat and straight until the bottom couple of inches and then she put tight curls in the bottom. I was so embarrassed when I walked out of there... in a complete state of shock. I called and they had me come back. They corrected the short layers in the back. But, without cutting more hair off, there wasn't much they could do about the front. I went to a get together with a dozen friends and not one person said a word about my hair. It is about 8 inches shorter and obviously much different from the last time they saw me and no one said a single word. My hair is messed up! Another friend saw me and said "What's wrong, I mean, what happened to your hair?" It is now almost 2 months later and my hair still hasn't grown down to my collar bone. Every day I look in the mirror I am reminded of this bad hair cut. Very, very disappointed. read more

I understand the this is a 'high end' salon....I went several weeks ago to have a manicure and gel nails. The girl did a great job as I asked about removal and reapplication the price she gave me was $35. As I call today to have that done they tell me $50....just for removal and re gel not even a manicure. I went with a different salon that charges $32. I usually only go to DJ with a gift card from my husband...I'll now have him buy at the other salon. I am a little puzzled also with DJ's levels of professional service? General, master etc? you either do a good job or not you shouldn't have to pay for someone who does it better. read more

I have had good experiences here and bad ones. I want to love this place but sometimes I am so annoyed. I had an appointment at 7:30 AM and the stylist was ill. Unfortunately they phoned me while I was in the car on my way to the appointment and my phone was silenced and I didn't know until I got here. They rescheduled with another stylist later in the day. I arrived at 4:30 PM only to be told that I had 15 minutes for the color service. I had scheduled low lights and I have a lot of hair. 15 minutes is not long enough. So the stylist whisked me out and I did nothing. I got to work late due to the canceled appointment and left early for the screwed up rescheduled one. This place pisses me off. I have been a long time customer and have seen a lot of the staff here. The customer service is nice, they greet you and offer you a beverage, take your coat, and keep the waiting area clean. The reason I stopped going after 10+ years, is the prices. Who wants to pay over 100 up to 200 dollars for a hair cut & color?? Especially when you have to go every 5-6 weeks. It's difficult to get appointments, because they have colorists & stylists. So try getting a appointment for these two people on the same day.....most of the time it won't work out. That's why I always bounced around to different people. I can honestly say I was never much impressed with any of my hair services, especially for the cost. What you are paying for is atmosphere and brand.....I would rather go and get a haircut and color by the same person and not get a scalp massage, and have some of a paycheck left over. read more

I wanted to look different. An hour later i left full of promises that I will hear lots of WOWs. True result? Nobody noticed any difference... When I asked my friends and coworkers, they said, oh, yah, your hair is a bit shorter... So, several days later I made another appointment to get better results. I did not like this salon. When I walked in I wasn't greeted with a smile or asked if I wanted anything to drink although others were. The color station consists of about 12 chairs next to on another or in front or behind, there are no mirrors in front. If your stylist is busy after you, they have someone else wash your hair out and on top of that if everyone is busy YOU have to blow dry your own hair. This is an expensive place and I think that no one should have to blow dry their own hair, what is that? Also the color, which is very expensive does not include a healthy trim. On top of that everyone is divided into levels, 1-6 based on how good they are and the higher levels are more expensive. I'm sorry but shouldn't everyone be god at their job? I did like my stylist but for what I got and how other people treated me, I would not be back. read more

My friend got a (men's) cut from Brooklyn. It was cut, but it did not look very good. And the price was not cheap. Plus she pretty much ignored his request as far as what he wanted, and blew dry it really weird. He had to wash it out as soon as he got home. After moving here from Chicago, where there's a salon on every corner, it was a challenge for me to find a salon I liked even a little. The Okemos Day Spa saved me and is by far my favorite salon in the area for hair coloring and styling. I leave there loving my hair every time, and I'm admittedly one of those crazy people who freaks out about any strand of wrong color or length. I know, it's just hair, it will grow back... I can't help it! Maybe I was bald in another life? The one time I did have a problem (which was probably exaggerated in my head), they kindly and happily fixed it for free, as is their standard policy. The environment is professional, organized, and clean without feeling stuffy or pretentious. The employees there are top notch in their talent and their personalities. It's pricey for this area, but definitely worth it. Bonus: the yummy smell of Aveda products wafting through the air and hand massages while you get your hair done! read more
