Y'All - Dr. McClain is the bees knees. After reading through the comments, I wanted to sprinkle some positivity for Downing Street Dental. I have been seeing Dr. McClain since 2019, and I have NEVER had a dentist be more thorough, more empathetic, and quite honestly so personable. I have been saved from getting a root canal, saving me thousands of dollars on top of fixing my bottom teeth and two front teeth that had chips in them from grinding constantly. The negative comments make me wonder if any of the individuals have really tried to have a conversation with Mr. M or any of the staff- Shout out to Vanessa and Becca!! I now look forward to the dentist... because I used to hate it. 12/10 would recommend. read more

We went to Downing Street Dental for a few years until we moved really far away. The dentist was really thorough, explained everything, and took his time. When my husband and I went in, we knew it would be a good amount of time for each appointment, but he was good, so we didn't mind too much. Recently I received a bill in the mail (I hadn't been to see the dentist there in 3 years). The bill had my name, an account number and an amount. That's it. Nothing else. Being a person that ALWAYS pays her bills, I contacted them to find out what was going on. The bill was for my husband, evidently I indicated I would be the guarantor (I don't recall this, but okay). I had to ask what it was for, when it was for (something that happened 2 years prior). We were just being notified of this bill being due. We told the office we were resubmitting it to our insurance because it should be covered. Since then, within two months, I have received two more bills, emails saying they never got in touch with me and I wouldn't talk to them, etc. This is completely false and unacceptable from an office. My husband continued to go to that dentist because he doesn't like change. He was with them for at least 4 years. Needless to say, we will not be returning. For the record, I did pay the bill before hearing back from insurance because I truly do not want to hear from this office again. read more

I had a lot of dental work done in the past, but my experience with Dr. McLain has been by far the worst. He is completely unable to see the big picture, diagnose, recognize an acute infection, treat pain and perform an emergency intervention. Instead, Dr. McLain prefers to treat pain with Percocet, blame unilateral swollen lymph nodes on "something else" and "assure" his patients they do not have an infection. When confronted about obvious mess-ups, Dr. McLain gets very defensive, visibly angry, lowers the patient's chair and tells them he will not treat them due to their "attitude". I call it a bad doctor. As a result, I had to have 2 root canals done, see an emergency dentist, and an endodontist to finish the procedure. Absolutely unbelievable. On a good note, Jessica, the office manager, has been very helpful and friendly. read more

Great dental office. Everyone was professional and responsive to anything I asked. I saw a dentist prior to Dr. McLain and they were charging me 3x what Downing Street Dental was charging. Needless to say he did a great job replacing my crown at a very reasonable cost. I will definitely recommend seeing them and I will return again when needed. read more

I am pretty particular about dentists and more so about dental hygienists. Prior to Downing Street Dental I've had everything. In the past I've had a truly terrible dentist, some average, one great. I've had mediocre hygienists and a phenomenal one. Being relatively new to Downing Street, I've now been seen by each of the hygienists, and while I don't remember names, after each one I think, I hope I get that one again next time. I want a thorough cleaning by someone who is dedicated to doing a good job. The hygienists seem very good here. Fortunately I haven't needed detailed dental work, but the dentist seems professional and smart, and he's not an alarmist trying to find ways to pay for his next ski trip to Switzerland, if you know what I mean. I would highly recommend them. Oh, and the "front of house"/receptionist is good, too. Surprisingly, that can make a big difference to the overall operation. read more

McLain was awful. He was rude and cold and wanted to apparently have me get serviced I didn't need, according to subsequent dentist. He is defensive and you can sense an angry man who is bitter at being fired or rejected. read more

Dr. James McLain's personality is forced-friendly with a dash of coldness. Have you ever been to Chicago? Have you felt the personality of Chicago? Dr McLain feels like Chicago...manifested in human form. I've been a patient of Downing Dental before McLain purchased the practice. My husband left the practice after not a warm experience with Dr McLain. My first mistake is that I stayed on board... Weirdness started when I made my second mistake of candidly confessing to Dr McLain that I don't floss daily. I explained that with my current work load, flossing daily is not going to happen for a few years. Whooooa...mistake. He looked somewhere between visibly annoyed and mad, as if this were a personal threat to his pride. I tried to ease his annoyance by explaining in cost / benefit terms why the time cost of flossing was greater than the potential benefit of flossing (at least for this specific time in my career). His eyes glazed over. Rather than hearing me out, he continued only deeper and longer into the generic lecture on flossing. Tension. Dental hygienists went still. Patients went quiet. I tried to lighten the air. Every attempt to lighten relations with a joke, resulted in a cold distant stare. He stopped looking me in the eye. Then Downing Dental sent me a 'how did we do' email. I wanted to clear the air, and voice my concerns. My assumption was that he would reach out and try to neutralize my concerns. That follow-up phone call never happened. Fast forward to the next dental cleaning - the strained energy persisted. I'm not one to ignore the elephant in the room, so I brought it up in a jovial manner, "Promise me I won't have to sit through another flossing lecture." He froze and said, "You know, you write me a bad review..." "Write a review??... I haven't written you a review...." Turns out, what I assumed was a request for feedback, was a request for a review on a dentist site. My intention was to genuinely give feedback, not make him look bad in front of his peers! On top of all this, my teeth were well taken care of at Downing Dental. My new dentist explained to me that the silver fillings in my mouth are synonymous with people on a low budget, or a government budget. They are 'old dentistry'. What the heck??! My new dentist recommended we upgrade them to white fillings. Wow, major cosmetic upgrade!! That's the kind of attentiveness that didn't happen at Downing Dental. Lastly, when I asked my new dentist if he'd cast me away if I didn't floss every day, he laughed and said, "Most people don't floss everyday!" read more

I was visiting my son in Denver last weekend from North Dakota and I ended up with severe tooth pain that became unbearable on Saturday. I called Downing Dental and they were able to get me in that same day. I have nothing but great things to say about the whole experience. They took the time to listen to my concerns and were very friendly and caring from the first phone call through the entire visit. Dr. Boyd was very professional and I felt like he was very knowledgeable and he took the time to figure out what was wrong and what needed to be done to ease my pain. I also called today to get a referral to a local doctor for follow up and they stated that they were going to send it out immediately. I cannot say enough about this place and I would not hesitate to recommend their services. read more

Stay away... on the day of your appointment, you may wait an hour in your car before being seen. Dr. McClain will likely attempt to pass you off to Dr. Boyd, who is too incompetent to do a filling correctly, despite your explanation of horrible service in the past. When you refuse to see Dr. Boyd and express frustration that they enter the wrong data for your address on file, McClain will crawl of out of his hole and tell you to leave. They are time wasting, arrogant and especially incompetent. Please advise. read more

I am such a big fan of Downing Street Dental! I do my best to recommend Dr. McLain whenever I can, because I know finding a good dentist can be really difficult. Dr. McLain and his staff always do a great job, and Dr. McLain takes the time to fully explain any additional work he recommends so that you can make an informed decision. Like auto mechanics, it can feel difficult to trust a dentist because it often feels like they're up-selling you and capitalizing on your ignorance, but I've never felt that way with Dr. McLain. He always provides an honest assessment that I know I can trust. read more

I waited several years to write this review to see if my teeth, not his lack of expertise, were the problem. He was one of the 2 worst dentists I have ever seen and I am still trying to straighten out the crown problems with which he left me. Beware, beware, beware. My son had the same experience. This is the Dentist office, I have been looking for, for decades! To get an all around team, from the Reception, the Hygienist to the Dentist. It is very rare to get the entire team to genuinely care for the patient and they also care about their own Excellence.....AND, for them to care about supporting local businesses as they understand the local people support them. Their awareness of latest technologies and practices, Dr. Mclane, Meedgan, Stacey, Sarah and Jhannel....without having to boast, it comes natural that they understand the importance of excellence and being at the very front of their craft. My wife influenced me to come back to Downing Dental, prior to the above team...this office was a sinking ship. I am incredibly happy that I did not miss out on the discovery, gave them another chance.......I look forward to each and every visit since this new team took over Downing Street Dental. My wisdom tooth grew out. Call them to ask if I had to see a dentist first to get the referral before I can see an oral surgeon. They told me yes I had to see a dentist first, so I went to them. The place was out dated and the visit was short. They took a x-ray and looked at my tooth and referred me to an oral surgeon. I googled the surgeon, and he had bad reviews. So I called my dental insurance company to find out if I can go to someone else. My insurance told me I did NOT have to see a dentist first before going to an oral surgeon. So I was lied to, they just wanted to do the exam and make money off of me. Called their office and expressed my concerns, and they didn't seem to care. Will not recommend this place! read more

Dr. McLain is knowledgeable, experienced and communicative. Also, his staff is extremely helpful. Ashley is friendly and always answers my insurance questions. I recently moved to Denver and found this Dentist through my dental insurance provider, United Healthcare. The office is clean as a Dentist's office should be, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The receptionist ran my insurance and told me what they would cover, so there wouldn't be any surprises. My Hygienist (Meredith) was friendly and thorough, but gentle, as well as helpful as far as tips regarding future dental care. Dr. McLain was knowledgeable and professional.
